Short answer: Start with Dept. Q if you want gritty cold cases and difficult detectives; choose The Residence for a funny locked-room whodunit; and watch Poker Face season 2 if you prefer clever, self-contained mysteries. This list also includes Korean puzzle-box crime, Swedish Nordic noir, an Australian mystery, a medical adaptation of Sherlock Holmes, and character-led investigations from Jamaica, Belgium, and Britain.
“Must-watch” is an editorial recommendation, not an objective ranking. The order below balances accessibility with variety and clearly separates new 2025 series from returning shows with a major 2025 season or a significant 2025 broadcast.

1. Dept. Q
Best for: viewers who want abrasive characters, bleak cold cases, and a story that builds across a season.
The strongest all-round recommendation is Dept. Q, Netflix’s nine-episode British crime drama about a brash, brilliant detective who leads a new Edinburgh police unit dedicated to unresolved cases. His team is made up of unlikely misfits, giving the series both an ensemble engine and plenty of friction.

Based on Jussi Adler-Olsen’s novels, the show has the clearest classic detective hook on this list: old crimes, damaged investigators, buried evidence, and a lead investigator whose intelligence does not make him easy to like. Matthew Goode, Chloe Pirrie, and Jamie Sives lead the cast.
Why it stands out: Dept. Q is the best choice when you want a properly serialized investigation rather than a case-of-the-week format. It is also a useful starting point for viewers who want the atmosphere of Nordic-style crime fiction in a British setting.
Where to look: Netflix identifies Dept. Q as a 2025 series. Catalog access can still vary by country and date, so check the Netflix listing available in your territory. Watch Dept. Q on Netflix if it is available where you live.
If you want more: The adaptation is based on Jussi Adler-Olsen’s novels, so readers can read the Dept. Q books after finishing the season. The books and the series should be treated as related versions of the premise, not interchangeable retellings.

Netflix later confirmed a second season after the first spent six weeks in its Global Top Ten. No release date should be assumed until Netflix announces one.
2. The Residence
Best for: viewers who want witty dialogue, eccentric suspects, and a classic whodunit without the usual grim tone.
The Residence moves the detective story into the White House and turns a disastrous state dinner into an elaborate locked-room mystery. Uzo Aduba plays consulting detective Cordelia Cupp, who must investigate the death of chief usher A.B. Wynter while navigating an extraordinary crime scene: 132 rooms and 157 suspects.
Netflix lists the 2025 series as an eight-episode mystery combining comedy and crime. Its appeal is not simply the unusual location. The show uses the crowded residence, competing political interests, staff rivalries, and eccentric personalities to create a large-scale version of the traditional drawing-room mystery.

It is a good pick when you want deduction, ensemble suspicion, and a murder puzzle but do not want every episode to be soaked in despair. Cordelia Cupp’s observational style gives the series a deliberately theatrical feel.

3. Ballard
Best for: viewers who prefer contemporary American police investigations, institutional pressure, and difficult cold cases.
Ballard centers on Detective Renee Ballard, who runs an underfunded volunteer cold-case unit within the LAPD. The premise places the investigation between two familiar detective-show pleasures: the persistence required to reopen forgotten cases and the institutional resistance that makes doing so difficult.

Apple TV’s official presentation describes the series as a drama-thriller based on Michael Connelly’s bestselling novels. Unlike a puzzle in which one extraordinary detective solves everything alone, Ballard is built around a team with limited resources. That makes evidence-gathering, cooperation, and persistence central to the drama.
Why it stands out: It is the most straightforward modern U.S. police drama in this selection. Choose it if you want an investigation grounded in police structures and cold-case work, rather than a comic detective, a supernatural premise, or an international mystery.
Where to look: Apple TV’s official listing identifies Ballard as a 2025 drama-thriller. The listing alone does not establish a universal worldwide catalog rule, so check the Apple TV service and availability in your country. Watch Ballard on Apple TV after confirming the local listing.
4. Poker Face, season 2
Best for: viewers who want self-contained mysteries, guest-star variety, road-story energy, and a detective who can recognize lies.

Peacock confirms that Poker Face season 2 premiered exclusively on May 8, 2025. It should be labeled a 2025 season, not a new 2025 show.
Charlie Cale is a human lie detector who moves from place to place and becomes involved in crimes that need solving. The format is a contemporary version of the classic “howcatchem”: the audience often knows the crime or the culprit early, and the pleasure comes from watching Charlie uncover how the deception works.
Why it stands out: It is the easiest recommendation here for viewers who do not want to commit to one long, continuous murder investigation. Each story can deliver a different setting, supporting cast, tone, and mystery while Charlie’s unusual ability provides the connective tissue.
Where to look: Peacock states that season 2 premiered exclusively on Peacock. Confirm current access and subscription options in your territory. Watch Poker Face season 2 on Peacock if it is offered where you are.
5. Nine Puzzles
Best for: viewers who enjoy Korean crime thrillers, serial-murder investigations, and clues that demand active theory-building.
Nine Puzzles begins with a disturbing connection between murders and strange puzzle pieces. Apple’s official listing describes an investigation in which a suspect and a detective must cooperate to stop a series of killings. The case starts when Ena cannot remember anything about her uncle’s murder, while Detective Hansaem pursues the connection between the evidence and the later crimes.
Why it stands out: The reluctant investigative partnership gives the show a different engine from the standard police team. The puzzle pieces are not just decorative clues; they define the series’ central mystery and invite viewers to keep reassessing what Ena remembers, what Hansaem believes, and whether cooperation is possible.

This is the pick for readers who want a more tightly constructed serial mystery rather than a relaxed procedural. Because the available official listing does not establish an episode count, additional cast details, or universal U.S. availability, those details should not be assumed.

6. The Åre Murders
Best for: viewers who like snowy landscapes, missing-person cases, strained police partnerships, and Scandinavian crime atmosphere.
Netflix’s Swedish Nordic-noir series follows Stockholm police officer Hanna Ahlander, who is under internal investigation and becomes involved in the disappearance of a young woman at a ski resort. The isolated, wintry setting is more than scenery: it creates a confined community where personal secrets and institutional tensions are difficult to escape.
The series premiered globally on February 6, 2025, and is based on Viveca Sten’s novels Hidden in Snow and Hidden in the Shadows. Netflix’s official listing presents five episodes divided between those two story arcs, giving the show a compact structure rather than an endless case-of-the-week run.
Why it stands out: The Åre Murders combines the missing-person hook of a police investigation with the chilly, psychologically pressured mood associated with Nordic noir. Hanna’s professional trouble also means the investigation is tied to her own precarious position.
Where to look: Netflix announced the global premiere and carries the official series listing, but catalog availability remains territory- and date-specific. Check the local Netflix catalog before planning a viewing.
If you want more: Nordic-noir readers can read Hidden in Snow and Hidden in the Shadows, the Viveca Sten novels identified as the source material for the two story arcs.
7. Watson
Best for: viewers who like detective adaptations but are happy for the cases to involve rare diseases instead of conventional homicides.
Recommended Free Tools
CBS’s Watson reimagines one of fiction’s foundational detectives as a modern medical investigator. Morris Chestnut stars as Dr. John Watson, who leads a clinical team investigating and treating rare diseases. CBS refers to the team as “doc-tectives,” a useful description of the show’s hybrid format.
This is not a police crime drama. The detective structure appears in the search for hidden causes, the testing of competing explanations, and the gradual interpretation of clues. The stakes are medical and personal rather than centered on arrest and prosecution.
Why it stands out: It earns a place here by showing how flexible the detective format can be. Viewers who have exhausted conventional police procedurals may enjoy the same investigative satisfaction in a hospital setting, while Sherlock Holmes readers may appreciate seeing Watson moved from assistant and chronicler into the center of the case-solving team.

8. The Survivors
Best for: viewers who prefer atmospheric, character-led mysteries in which an old tragedy reshapes an entire community.
Netflix’s Australian limited series begins when a young woman’s body is discovered in Tasmania. The death reopens secrets surrounding two earlier drownings and the disappearance of a girl fifteen years before. Detective Senior Sergeant Sue Pendlebury is involved in the investigation, but the show is also an ensemble examination of guilt, memory, and the damage left by unresolved loss.
Why it stands out: The central question is not simply who committed the latest crime. The investigation exposes how a community has lived with an earlier disaster and how people protect themselves by withholding, revising, or misremembering the past. That makes The Survivors better suited to viewers who want a limited, absorbing mystery than a conventional procedural with neatly separated weekly cases.
Netflix classifies the series as an Australian mystery, crime thriller, and limited series based on a book. The Tasmanian setting and the long shadow of the drownings give it a slower, more emotionally cumulative shape than the list’s lighter or more puzzle-driven choices.
Where to look: Netflix’s official synopsis and listing establish its presentation of The Survivors. Check the catalog in your country because availability can change by territory and date.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.9. Get Millie Black
Best for: viewers who want missing-person investigations shaped by place, family, institutional systems, and local knowledge.
Get Millie Black follows former Scotland Yard detective Millie-Jean Black after she returns to Kingston and begins working missing-person cases. The Jamaican setting is the show’s defining feature, but its appeal goes beyond location: Millie must navigate the difference between formal investigative systems, personal relationships, and what it means to understand the community where she is working.
HBO’s official press material describes the series as limited, while Channel 4 carried it in 2025. There is an important date distinction: its original U.S. HBO debut was in late 2024, so it is more accurate to call Get Millie Black a major 2025 watch than an unqualified 2025 premiere.
Why it stands out: The missing-person format naturally brings individual lives and family consequences into the investigation. Millie’s return also makes the cases personally consequential, giving the show a different emphasis from a detached police procedural.
Where to look: HBO’s press material and Channel 4’s 2025 broadcast are the relevant official distribution references. Your local availability may differ, and the U.S. premiere date should not be rewritten as a 2025 debut.

10. Patience
Best for: viewers who want a character-centered British crime drama built around an unusual but grounded investigative partnership.
Channel 4 describes Patience as a six-part British-Belgian crime drama about an autistic police archivist who works with Detective Inspector Bea Metcalf. Together, they tackle a series of cases, combining Patience’s archival perspective with Metcalf’s established experience within the police.
Why it stands out: The show’s interest lies in the working relationship as much as in the individual cases. Patience’s autism should not be treated as a magical deduction device or a substitute for characterization. The more useful way to approach the series is to focus on how the two investigators communicate, interpret information, handle institutional expectations, and develop trust.
Channel 4 scheduled the series for January 8, 2025. Its six-part structure makes it a manageable choice for viewers who want a complete detective drama rather than a long-running franchise.
Where to look: Channel 4’s official press material identifies the format and the January 2025 scheduling. Availability outside the broadcaster’s territory may depend on local licensing, so check the current regional listing.

No. Poker Face is included for its second season, which premiered on May 8, 2025. Get Millie Black originally debuted on HBO in late 2024 but received a 2025 Channel 4 broadcast, making it a major 2025 watch rather than a strict 2025 premiere. The other selections are new 2025 series or limited series based on the supplied official listings.
Which show is the best starting point for a traditional detective-story fan?
Dept. Q is the strongest starting point for gritty, serialized cold cases and a difficult but brilliant lead detective. Ballard is the better choice if you prefer a contemporary American police unit and institutional realism.
Are these shows all police procedurals?
No. The Residence is a comic locked-room mystery, Poker Face is a roaming howcatchem, Watson is a medical mystery, and The Survivors is an ensemble crime mystery. Nine Puzzles, The Åre Murders, Get Millie Black, and Patience use police or detective structures in different ways.
Can I watch every show from the same country or streaming service?
No. The list deliberately includes British, American, Korean, Swedish, Australian, Jamaican-set, Belgian-British, and medical-adaptation perspectives. The named services and broadcasters are also territory-specific, so confirm local availability before subscribing.
The Bottom Line
