For free, legal movie streaming in the U.S., start with Tubi for on-demand browsing, Pluto TV or The Roku Channel for live channels, and Kanopy or Hoopla if your library or university participates. “Free” usually comes with ads, scheduled programming, a rotating catalog, or institution-based eligibility—not permanent access to every title.

This U.S.-focused comparison reflects the services described in the cited guides. Catalogs, licensing, device support, and account requirements can vary by location and change over time; check the provider for a specific title before counting on it.

Which service should you try first?
For browsing movies on demand
Try Tubi first if you want a broad free, ad-supported starting point. Tubi’s help center describes it as “a 100% free, 100% legal streaming service” and says short ad breaks fund its movies and shows. Its catalog is not a guarantee that a particular film will remain available, so search the service before planning a watch.
For live-channel surfing
Choose Pluto TV or The Roku Channel if you prefer scheduled channels as well as on-demand options. Xumo Play also combines live and on-demand programming. These services are closer to turning on a channel than to having a permanent, complete library of films.

- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
For documentaries and library access
Check Kanopy if you have access through a participating library or university; its strengths include curated independent, classic, and documentary films. Hoopla is another library-linked option, with movie and TV borrowing subject to the rules and limits set by your library. Neither is available simply because you have a library card: the institution must participate.
For a title missing elsewhere
Plex can provide an additional free, ad-supported catalog to check. YouTube’s official movie listings and verified channels can also surface authorized free viewing, but search results include paid options and user uploads, so verify that the specific listing is official and free.

How to tell whether a movie is actually free
- On YouTube, use official movie listings or verified channels and check the listing itself; a search result alone does not establish that an upload is authorized or free.
- In Prime Video, look for the free-with-ads area and confirm the access label on the individual title. The app also presents rentals, purchases, subscriptions, and Prime titles.
- For Kanopy or Hoopla, confirm that your library or university participates and check its borrowing rules before choosing a film.
- On any service, search for the title in the provider’s official app or website because catalogs and regional rights change.
Stay with official sites and apps
Open the provider’s official website or app rather than a lookalike streaming page. Avoid sites that require an unknown player, tell you to bypass a security warning, or promise every current release for free. Those are warning signs, not reliable ways to find authorized free movies.

These services differ in how they make content free: advertising, scheduled live channels, or access through an eligible library or university. Their catalogs and regional rights rotate, and no single option here is established as a permanent source for every movie or TV show. For a documentary-focused selection, a library service such as Kanopy or an official broadcaster catalog may be more useful than a broad entertainment catalog, depending on the title you want.
