Some of wrestling’s most memorable characters began as reinventions: Rocky Maivia became The Rock, Hulk Hogan became “Hollywood” Hogan, and Dustin Rhodes became Goldust. This list follows WWE’s own 2013 ranking of ten influential personality changes, rather than claiming to settle which alter egos are the ten greatest of all time. The examples span WWE, WCW and ECW, and “alter ego” here means a distinct on-screen identity or pronounced character change—not a statement about a performer’s private identity.
What makes a wrestling alter ego iconic?
WWE’s 2012 feature defines an alter ego as “another side of oneself; a second self.” In wrestling, that can mean a new name, look, voice, attitude or story—not necessarily a completely different person. Some changes were dramatic, while others developed over time. The ten below are the examples WWE selected for its 2013 feature on striking personality changes; that is WWE’s historical editorial ranking, not an independent all-time consensus.
Each entry identifies who played the character, what changed and the promotion or career context where relevant. Several transformations happened outside WWE, even though WWE later chronicled them.
10 iconic WWE Superstar alter egos
1. Booker T became King Booker
After winning the 2006 King of the Ring tournament, Booker T adopted the royal trappings of King Booker: crown, cape and a feigned British accent. The pompous presentation turned his victory into an ongoing character, and WWE says he went on to win his first World Heavyweight Championship.

2. Rocky Maivia became The Rock
Dwayne Johnson first appeared as the clean-cut Rocky Maivia, but crowds rejected the upbeat newcomer. The character shifted into The Rock, an arrogant, verbally sharp personality who could turn a microphone into a weapon. The change replaced a broadly smiling hero with a brash figure who commanded attention on his own terms.
3. Hunter Hearst Helmsley became Triple H
Hunter Hearst Helmsley began as an etiquette-obsessed Connecticut blueblood. He shed that polished image as a member of D-Generation X, embracing irreverence, then developed into the more brutal “Game.” WWE also lists “Cerebral Assassin” and “King of Kings” among his adopted nicknames: additions to an evolving character rather than a single one-time makeover.
4. Scott Steiner became Big Poppa Pump
In WCW, Scott Steiner turned on his brother and emerged with blond hair, a more muscular presentation and a louder, more forceful persona: Big Poppa Pump. The shift made his look and manner part of the character’s story, separating this version of Steiner from the tag-team identity audiences had known.

5. Johnny Polo became Raven

6. Surfer Sting became dark Sting
Sting traded colorful face paint and attire for black and white, then withdrew from the spotlight, watching from arena rafters as the nWo grew in WCW. WWE’s account connects the transformation to the group’s use of a Sting impostor: a story that made the real Sting’s silence and eventual pursuit of the nWo central to the character.
7. Vince McMahon became Mr. McMahon
For years, Vince McMahon was best known to viewers as an interviewer and commentator. His on-screen role changed into Mr. McMahon, a ruthless boss, with the transformation revealed during the 1997 Survivor Series WWE Championship match. The persona turned the authority figure behind the broadcast into a character directly involved in the conflict.

8. “Stunning” Steve Austin became “Stone Cold” Steve Austin
Before “Stone Cold,” Austin’s career included WCW, ECW and a WWE stint as the Ringmaster. After the 1996 King of the Ring, he emerged as the defiant Texas Rattlesnake. The change exchanged the earlier “Stunning” presentation and Ringmaster role for a blunt, rebellious identity built around refusing to be controlled.
9. Hulk Hogan became “Hollywood” Hogan
At WCW’s Bash at the Beach in 1996, Hulk Hogan joined the nWo and took the name “Hollywood” Hogan. The red-and-yellow look gave way to black and white, and the familiar heroic presentation became a self-serving villain persona. WWE reports that WCW dominated television ratings for 84 consecutive weeks after Hogan’s turn and the nWo’s rise; that figure is WWE’s retrospective claim, not an independently verified ratings calculation here.
10. “The Natural” Dustin Rhodes became Goldust
Dustin Rhodes moved away from the “Natural” identity and his father Dusty Rhodes’s legacy to become Goldust: a gold-clad, Hollywood-obsessed character. WWE reports that Goldust held the Hardcore Championship nine times, the Intercontinental Championship three times and the World Tag Team Championship once. Those are the reign totals given in WWE’s retrospective.

Which wrestler played multiple characters?
Mick Foley is the clearest multi-persona example in WWE’s coverage: the same performer played Cactus Jack, Mankind and Dude Love. Cactus Jack was the brawler; Mankind was masked and deranged; Dude Love was tie-dyed and fun-loving. They were distinct on-screen identities, not three performers.
WWE says Foley arrived there in 1996 as Mankind and describes his fall through the Hell in a Cell structure during a match with The Undertaker as a defining career moment. WWE also notes that Foley later won the WWE Championship from The Rock in 1999. These are WWE’s own retrospective descriptions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who was behind Goldust?
Goldust was played by Dustin Rhodes, son of Dusty Rhodes. The character’s gold costume and Hollywood fixation marked a departure from Rhodes’s earlier “Natural” identity and the legacy attached to his family name. WWE’s retrospective credits Goldust with nine Hardcore Championship reigns, three Intercontinental Championship reigns and one World Tag Team Championship reign.

When did Hulk Hogan become Hollywood Hogan?
Hogan joined the nWo at WCW’s Bash at the Beach in 1996 and became “Hollywood” Hogan. The turn brought the black-and-white presentation and villainous, self-serving persona that contrasted with his red-and-yellow hero image. WWE’s 2013 feature associates the period after the turn with 84 consecutive weeks of WCW television ratings dominance; that is the statistic as WWE reported it.
Why the list is not a definitive canon
WWE published more than one retrospective about wrestling identities. Its 2012 split-personality feature includes other examples such as Mr. America, Mick Foley’s three personas, The Red Rooster, Spider Lady, The Midnight Rider, The Black Scorpion, Mortis and Sin Cara Negro. The 2013 top-ten feature instead ranks personality changes. Because these are WWE editorial selections and retrospective accounts, they establish what WWE chose to highlight—not a universal ranking or independent confirmation of every characterization.
