From a poseable soldier with a world of accessories to a game that turned a living room into a playing field, the toys associated with the 1960s reflected changing ideas about imagination, technology, gender and play. This is an editorial selection, not a definitive sales ranking: available sources do not provide comparable sales figures for all ten. Barbie belongs in the story too, with one important date correction: she debuted in 1959, just before the decade.

How these toys changed the playroom

The decade’s memorable toys did more than keep children busy. Some invited children to act out adult roles; others made building, drawing, baking or group movement the activity itself. Several grew into wider play worlds through vehicles, accessories, sets or related products. Together, they show a shift toward toys that offered a repeatable activity or a setting children could customize.

The ten examples below are selected for their distinctive forms of play and documented place in toy history. They are not ranked by popularity: the cited sources do not offer a common sales dataset across all ten.

Ten toys associated with the 1960s

1. Barbie: a 1959 debut with a 1960s world around her

Barbie arrived in 1959, so she was not a 1960s launch. But the decade brought a growing cast and setting for the doll: Ken followed in 1961, the Dreamhouse in 1962, and Skipper in 1964, according to HISTORY. Those additions made Barbie play less a single doll and more a connected world of characters, homes and imagined lives.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

That expansion also made Barbie a revealing part of the era’s play culture. A fashion doll could give children a platform for storytelling and role-play, while its adult styling and lifestyle accessories prompted debate about the expectations represented by the toy. Her influence on the decade is best understood as continuing and expanding—not beginning in it.

2. G.I. Joe: the action figure takes shape

Hasbro released G.I. Joe in 1964. The Strong National Museum of Play describes an 11½-inch figure with 21 moving parts, accompanied by uniforms, vehicles, equipment and playsets. Its poseability and military presentation helped establish “action figure” as a distinct product category rather than simply a doll marketed to boys. The museum recounts that more than 400 million figures had sold over the 40 years after the debut, a cumulative figure reported with that historical cutoff—not a current sales total. The Strong

The toy’s rapid arrival is also documented by PBS American Experience, which reports that more than 16 million units had sold by the end of 1964. Its military setting resonated in Cold War America; as the Vietnam War intensified, PBS notes, war-related toys later became less popular. PBS American Experience

3. Easy-Bake Oven: baking as toy play

Kenner debuted the Easy-Bake Oven in 1963. Rather than merely imitate a kitchen, it used a light bulb as its heat source to make baking a functional activity within play. Smithsonian Magazine reports an estimate from Debbie Schaefer-Jacobs, a curator at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History: approximately 500,000 ovens sold in the first year. That is an attributed estimate, not an audited sales figure. Smithsonian Magazine

The oven’s premise connected play to domestic work and food-making, activities often coded as girls’ play. Its long product history also shows how a toy can persist through redesigns: a brand timeline records a 2025 release by Just Play under license from Hasbro, though that historical entry does not establish present-day availability. National Easy-Bake Oven Day timeline

4. Hot Wheels: miniature custom cars

Mattel introduced Hot Wheels in 1968, presenting small cars with a custom-car look that set them apart from ordinary miniature vehicles. The Victoria and Albert Museum describes the line as a competitor to Matchbox and highlights its exaggerated hot rods and muscle cars. Mattel’s brand history gives May 18, 1968, as the sale date of the first Custom Camaro and the brand’s official birthday. V&A Hot Wheels Media

Hot Wheels turned car culture into a compact, repeatable form of play: children could collect different designs and imagine speed, customization and competition without needing a full-size vehicle.

5. LEGO: building and rebuilding

LEGO’s own historical timeline includes a 1960–1969 chapter covering product development, including development of the LEGO wheel. That decade context matters because the bricks’ enduring appeal lies in a mode of play rather than one fixed story: a child can assemble, take apart and remake. The company history supports the decade connection, but does not establish an exact debut year for a particular set in this account. LEGO Group

6. Corgi toy cars: film and television on wheels

British maker Mettoy’s Corgi die-cast cars brought recognizable vehicles into children’s hands, including licensed cars from film and television. The V&A reports that the James Bond Aston Martin DB5 was one of the best-selling toys of 1965 and received that year’s British Association of Toy Retailers Toy of the Year award. “One of the best-selling” is the museum’s qualitative description; it is not a unit-sales comparison. V&A

As with Hot Wheels, small cars made vehicle play portable. Licensing added another layer: a toy could connect a child’s play to stories and screen characters already familiar from popular culture.

7. Twister: the body becomes the game board

Twister made group movement central to play, asking participants to place hands and feet on colored circles while trying not to topple. The Toy Retailers Association’s decade retrospective describes it as a success in 1966 and includes it among the era’s toys. The association cautions that it cannot guarantee the accuracy of its decade-page material beyond its Toy of the Year records, so its account supports the period association rather than a fully verified launch date. Toy Retailers Association

8. Spirograph: patterns made by play

With Spirograph, children used shaped guides and pens to make intricate geometric patterns. The Toy Retailers Association retrospective says Denys Fisher launched it in 1965 and records it as Toy of the Year in 1967. The association’s stated accuracy caveat applies to its decade-page launch details; its Toy of the Year records are the part it says it can guarantee. Toy Retailers Association

The toy made visual experimentation accessible without requiring drawing skill: changing the guide or pen position produced a new design, turning repetition into discovery.

9. Etch-a-Sketch: drawing without keeping the drawing

Etch-a-Sketch is associated with the decade in TIME’s selection of representative toys and appears in the Toy Retailers Association’s retrospective. The available accounts do not consistently establish its original debut date, and the trade association’s decade page contains an inconsistent dating reference. It is safer to call it a period icon than to assign it a precise launch year. TIME Toy Retailers Association

Its distinctive appeal was an erasable screen controlled by knobs: drawing was a physical process, but the result could be cleared and started over. That temporary quality made trial and error part of the fun.

10. Lite-Brite: pictures made of light

TIME includes Lite-Brite among its overview of 1960s toys, but the cited material does not provide a verified debut year or a detailed origin account. Its place in the decade’s toy culture is therefore best described as a period association, not a precisely dated launch. TIME

Lite-Brite offered a different kind of making: children arranged colored pegs in a backlit panel to create glowing images. Like Spirograph and Etch-a-Sketch, it put visual creation at the center; unlike them, light itself became part of the finished picture.

What made the decade’s toys distinctive?

These toys did not all share a single style or audience. Their common thread was that many offered a clear invitation to do something: build, cook, draw, collect, move or role-play. Accessories and connected products extended some play worlds, while creative toys made variety possible through each new construction or design.

The evidence also varies. Museum and company histories establish some dates and product details more firmly than retrospective toy lists do. For Barbie, the important distinction is a 1959 debut followed by major 1960s additions; for Etch-a-Sketch and Lite-Brite, the sources support decade association without a secure launch date. That uneven record is one reason a numbered list should not be mistaken for an official ranking.

Which of these toys are still around?

Several names have clear modern product-line connections in the cited histories, including Barbie, G.I. Joe, Easy-Bake Oven, Hot Wheels and LEGO. That does not guarantee a specific model is currently sold or in stock. The surviving appeal is also not identical across the list: some lines continue through new products, while vintage originals and reproductions are a separate collecting question.
