“Perfect from start to finish” is a matter of taste, not an objective score. In a Collider-attributed list republished by Head Topics on September 15, 2024, writer Daniel Boyer uses the phrase to describe ten 1970s horror films that keep their suspense, atmosphere, or momentum working through the ending. The films range from murder mysteries and folk horror to science-fiction paranoia and zombie survival.

What “perfect from start to finish” means here

The ranking below follows the order in the Head Topics republication of the Collider-attributed list, from #10 to #1. It is one writer’s judgment about how compelling and entertaining each film remains through its conclusion—not a universal consensus or a formal scoring system. The useful comparison is how each movie hooks the viewer, sustains tension, and delivers its payoff.

The 10 films, ranked

10. Deep Red (1975) — murder mystery and delayed revelation

Dario Argento’s giallo centers on a witness to a killing and a serial murderer whose identity remains hidden. A chain of murders and twists keeps the mystery moving, while violence escalates toward a late revelation. Its appeal is the steady accumulation of clues and shocks: the story gives viewers a puzzle to follow as danger grows.

9. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) — rural survival and pursuit

Tobe Hooper’s film turns a family of killers and a group of endangered young people into a grim survival story. Rather than leaning on a puzzle to solve, it sustains attention through threat, frantic escapes, and a final chase. The pressure comes from how little safety the characters can find once they are in danger.

8. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) — science-fiction paranoia

Philip Kaufman’s film makes a slow realization its engine: residents of San Francisco are being replaced. Suspicion spreads as familiar people become harder to trust, building dread through uncertainty rather than constant physical confrontation. The gradual shift from unease to danger gives the story its tightening grip.

7. The Tenant (1976) — psychological horror in an apartment building

Roman Polanski’s apartment-set horror follows a new tenant whose suspicion of his neighbors deepens into a disturbing conclusion. Its confined setting and growing uncertainty make the viewer share the central character’s unease. The tension is less about a visible monster than about whether the threat is outside him, inside him, or both.

6. The Wicker Man (1973) — folk-horror investigation

Robin Hardy’s film follows a police investigation on a remote Scottish island, where the residents’ beliefs and intentions emerge gradually. It builds suspense through atmosphere and discovery rather than relying on jump scares or gore. The mystery keeps the story moving while the island’s customs make the destination feel increasingly unsettling.

5. Jaws (1975) — creature-feature suspense

Steven Spielberg’s thriller follows the effort to hunt a shark threatening a beach community. The danger is direct, but the film’s sustained suspense comes from the combination of a community at risk and a hunt that must succeed. It offers a more outward-facing kind of tension than the entries built around psychological uncertainty or hidden identities.

4. Halloween (1978) — suburban slasher

John Carpenter’s film centers on Michael Myers’s return to Haddonfield. The familiar suburban setting becomes a source of vulnerability as the threat moves through it. Where some films on this list build toward a revelation, Halloween holds attention through pursuit and the anticipation of danger arriving closer.

3. The Exorcist (1973) — supernatural possession

William Friedkin’s film focuses on a mother seeking help for her daughter, whose condition points to a supernatural threat. The emotional center is the family’s desperation and the search for a response to something that ordinary explanations cannot contain. That personal stake gives the escalating horror its force.

2. Alien (1979) — claustrophobic science-fiction horror

Ridley Scott’s film traps its characters aboard a spaceship with a growing threat. Confinement and gradual escalation drive the suspense: as danger becomes harder to avoid, the limited setting sharpens every decision. The list’s praise for its payoff rests on how effectively the pressure built along the way carries into the ending.

1. Dawn of the Dead (1978) — zombie survival with social themes

George A. Romero’s film places survivors in a shopping mall amid a zombie crisis. The setting supports both immediate survival stakes and a theme of consumerism, while character-focused conflicts keep the story from being only about physical danger. It tops the ranking because its horror, human drama, and broader ideas work together across the film.

How the films sustain attention in different ways

The ten choices do not depend on a single formula. The mystery-driven films—Deep Red, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Tenant, and The Wicker Man—hold attention by withholding or complicating information. Jaws and Halloween put more emphasis on pursuit and a threat closing in. Alien turns confinement into pressure; The Texas Chain Saw Massacre focuses on survival under attack; and The Exorcist grounds supernatural horror in a mother’s fight for her daughter. Dawn of the Dead combines survival with character conflict and social commentary.

That variety is why the list works best as a set of different routes to a satisfying horror film, not a claim that all ten are flawless by the same standard. Its scope is specifically 1970s releases, despite the broader wording of the title.

Where to find verified physical editions

For collectors, Arrow Video’s official U.S. product page lists a Deep Red Blu-ray and describes a restoration from a 4K scan of the original negative: Arrow Video’s Deep Red Blu-ray page. Arrow Video calls the film “the ultimate giallo movie”; that is the label’s promotional description, not an independent consensus.

Shochiku’s official pages document a Blu-ray edition of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and a Japan-market 50th-anniversary 4K digital-remaster edition. Those are Japan-market edition references, not evidence of a U.S. release: Shochiku’s edition information.
