Her 10 picks range from playful slashers to a comparatively gentle vampire coming-of-age film, so the best choice depends on the mood and gore level you want.
Richards’s recommendations appeared in a PEOPLE-attributed article syndicated by Yahoo News on October 12, 2025. She said she had logged 320 films on Letterboxd so far that year, with more than a third being horror; that is her own diary count, not a broader statistic. Read the Yahoo News syndication.
What kind of horror is on Richards’s list?
Richards favors body horror, grotesque imagery, unusual women protagonists, camp and cult horror, and films from the 1990s and early 2000s. She also likes movies that make her laugh. The resulting list moves between slasher comedy, supernatural horror, psychological thriller, anime and a gentler vampire story; it is not arranged by a stated scoring method.
For a sense of her taste beyond the picks, Richards wrote: “I think Wild at Heart — David Lynch’s gritty, gory, sexy masterpiece starring Laura Dern and Nicolas Cage — is perhaps the greatest movie ever put to screen.”

All 10 films, matched to their mood
| Film | Best fit if you want | What Richards highlights |
|---|---|---|
| Cherry Falls (1999) | Teen slasher comedy | Brittany Murphy’s performance and dark, twisty humor; a killer targets virgins in a small town. |
| Idle Hands | Absurd comedy-slasher | A stoner-horror premise about a hand that acts on its own, with Devon Sawa, Jessica Alba, Seth Green and Elden Henson. |
| Stopmotion (2023) | Psychological unease and body horror | Robert Morgan’s feature debut follows Aisling Franciosi’s Ella, an artist whose effort to finish her ill mother’s stop-motion film blurs the boundary between artist and art. |
| The Ugly Stepsister | Fairytale body horror | Emilie Blichfeldt’s Norwegian reworking of Cinderella centers on stepsister Elvira and disturbing attempts to change her appearance. |
| May | Loneliness and dark suspense | Angela Bettis plays a lonely woman whose childhood doll connects to the line, “If you can’t find a friend, make one.” |
| Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person (2024) | Moody, comparatively gentle vampire coming-of-age story | Sara Montpetit plays Sasha and Félix-Antoine Bénard plays Paul. |
| House of Wax (2005) | Slasher spectacle | Featuring Paris Hilton, Jared Padalecki and Chad Michael Murray; Richards recommends it as an entertaining double feature with Queen of the Damned. |
| Perfect Blue (1997) | Psychological anime thriller | Satoshi Kon’s story follows a pop idol who becomes an actress and confronts a volatile stalker, with fame and idolization at its center. |
| Bones (2001) | Supernatural horror-comedy | Ernest Dickerson’s film stars Snoop Dogg as a man returning from the dead and Pam Grier as his former lover; Richards praises its visual style and cast. |
| Hell of a Summer | Camp slasher | Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk’s debut feature is fun, in Richards’s view, though she wanted more gore. |
How to choose a film for tonight
For laughs and slasher energy
Start with Cherry Falls or Idle Hands for comedy threaded through slasher setups. House of Wax offers a more straightforward slasher spectacle, while Hell of a Summer leans into camp. Richards specifically says she wanted more gore from the last of these, so do not assume every slasher on the list has the same intensity.
For body horror and disturbing imagery
The Ugly Stepsister and Stopmotion are the clearest fits if grotesque transformation or body-horror imagery is what you seek. The former filters it through a Cinderella reworking; the latter uses an artist’s increasingly blurred relationship with her work for psychological unease.
Rank #2
For psychological stories or a different horror mode
Perfect Blue is the anime thriller choice, built around fame, idolization and a stalker. May is centered on loneliness and unrequited longing. Bones brings supernatural horror-comedy, while Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person is described as moody and comparatively gentle rather than as a high-intensity scare pick.

The films span several decades, with titles from the 1990s and early 2000s alongside releases from 2023 and 2024 and the newer Hell of a Summer. Richards’s stated preferences explain the mix better than any claim that these are the ten most frightening or objectively greatest horror movies. Her list is useful as a route into camp, cult and offbeat horror, especially if you want a change of pace from conventional scares.
