The 10 greatest Western movies of the last 100 years range from John Ford’s influential studio classics to modern films that question the frontier myth. This ranked starter canon draws on institutional and editorial selections—not a single definitive poll—and covers films released roughly between 1926 and 2026.
How this ranking was chosen
There is no authoritative poll covering this exact ten-film list. The American Film Institute (AFI) offers a useful anchor: its definition describes a Western as “a genre of films set in the American West that embodies the spirit, the struggle and the demise of the new frontier.” Its 2008 list drew on 500 nominated films and a jury of more than 1,500 creative-community leaders. But AFI considered only American feature-length fiction films released before January 1, 2008, so its ranking cannot settle a century-wide, international list extending through 2026. AFI’s 10 Top 10
This selection combines AFI’s rankings with the British Film Institute’s editorial coverage of frontier films and Cowboys & Indians’ 2021 ranking, which it says drew on surveys of staff and readers, critics, actors, and filmmakers interested in the genre. Those sources differ in scope and method; the order below is an editorial synthesis, not a poll result. BFI’s great frontier films · Cowboys & Indians’ 2021 Western ranking
The 10 greatest Western movies, ranked
1. The Searchers (1956) — John Ford
AFI ranks The Searchers first among its Westerns, and the film’s influence on later filmmakers helps explain its central place in the genre’s canon. Its pursuit story turns the familiar rescue quest into an unsettling drama of vengeance, belonging, and exclusion. That power comes with a serious complication: the film’s treatment of race and captivity is troubling, and racist language spoken by characters should be understood as part of that history, not repeated as neutral description. The Searchers both shapes the Western hero myth and exposes its costs. AFI’s Western list

2. Stagecoach (1939) — John Ford
Stagecoach helped reinvigorate a Western that BFI says had fallen from favor, introduced Monument Valley to Ford’s cinema, and helped make John Wayne a star. Its enclosed, mixed company of travelers gives the journey psychological stakes as well as a frontier setting. Cowboys & Indians placed it first in its 2021 list. Its influence is not just a matter of familiar vistas: the film helped establish a more complex dramatic model for the genre. BFI on frontier films · Cowboys & Indians’ 2021 list
3. High Noon (1952) — Fred Zinnemann
AFI ranks High Noon second among Westerns. Its real-time deadline gives the story a sharply focused structure: Marshal Will Kane seeks help as a threat approaches, only to find the town unwilling to stand with him. The film turns a showdown into a study of civic responsibility, fear, and social pressure. Rather than presenting the lawman as a hero who can simply restore order, it asks what a community owes the person acting in its name. AFI’s Western list

4. Unforgiven (1992) — Clint Eastwood
AFI ranks Unforgiven fourth, and its place rests partly on the tension between Eastwood’s established screen image and the film’s critique of the gunfighter legend. Its aging protagonist is not a cleanly heroic figure, and violence does not arrive with the simple moral clarity common to more romantic Westerns. Cowboys & Indians describes the film as a dark character study. Unforgiven asks what it costs to turn killing into a story of courage—and what remains when that story is stripped away. 5. Shane (1953) — George Stevens
AFI and Cowboys & Indians both place Shane third in their respective Western rankings. Its conflict between homesteaders and cattle ranchers gives the frontier story a clear social divide, while the gunfighter at its center embodies a more difficult one: the violence that protects a community may also make the protector impossible to keep within it. Shane’s uneasy departure sustains the genre’s heroic ideal even as it reveals the hero’s isolation. AFI’s Western list · Cowboys & Indians’ 2021 list

6. The Wild Bunch (1969) — Sam Peckinpah
The Wild Bunch marks a turn toward a harsher, revisionist Western. Its violence and its portrait of a changing frontier unsettle the genre’s older romance of the outlaw and the open range. Cowboys & Indians includes the film in its 2021 top 100 and discusses a restored 144-minute cut; that runtime describes the cut in that publication’s coverage, not every version or release. The film matters here for how it makes the end of the old West feel brutal rather than noble. Cowboys & Indians’ 2021 list
7. Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) — Sergio Leone
Sergio Leone’s operatic Western takes familiar genre conventions and makes them conspicuous: entrances, confrontations, landscapes, and suspense become part of a grand, deliberate performance. That self-conscious style bridges classical Western imagery and European reinvention of the form. Cowboys & Indians ranked it eighteenth in 2021; it also placed 95= in the overall 2022 Sight and Sound poll. The latter is a cross-film poll placement, not a Western-only ranking. 8. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966) — Sergio Leone
This Italian-produced Western widens a canon otherwise weighted toward U.S. studio films. Its morally compromised central figures, striking landscapes, carefully staged showdown, and Ennio Morricone score show how much tension the genre can build through image, sound, and timing rather than conventional heroism. Cowboys & Indians ranked it sixteenth in 2021. Its international production context is part of its significance: the Western became a language filmmakers outside the United States could reshape. Cowboys & Indians’ 2021 list
9. McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971) — Robert Altman
McCabe & Mrs. Miller trades the triumphant settlement story for a portrait of fragile enterprise, imperfect characters, and failure. BFI highlights its antiheroes, sound design, and distinctive image texture. The atmosphere matters: instead of presenting the frontier as a clean stage for individual mastery, the film makes its settlement feel uncertain and its ambitions vulnerable. Its melancholy anti-myth gives the Western a different measure of consequence. BFI’s great frontier films

10. Meek’s Cutoff (2010) — Kelly Reichardt
Set in 1845, Meek’s Cutoff follows an Oregon Trail party uncertain of its route. BFI emphasizes the film’s feminist perspective, in which women become the group’s pragmatic and moral center rather than peripheral witnesses to a male adventure. Its measured treatment of uncertainty revises the classic Western journey: the landscape does not promise a clear destination, and authority does not guarantee sound judgment. It is a contemporary endpoint for a list concerned with how the genre’s perspective has changed. BFI’s great frontier films

These films represent different answers to the same question: what does the frontier story reveal about power, community, violence, and belonging? The classics helped establish the genre’s images and heroic conventions; later films turned those conventions against themselves or shifted whose experience counts. AFI’s criteria include critical recognition, awards, popularity over time, historical significance, and cultural impact. BFI’s frontier coverage also draws attention to craft and representation. Taken together, those measures make a stronger starter canon than treating any one list as a final verdict. AFI’s methodology · BFI’s frontier-film selection
