10 freaky Shudder movies, by the kind of unease
1. The Dark and the Wicked (2020) — bleak supernatural dread
Shudder describes siblings returning to a secluded farm where their dying father and grieving mother face waking nightmares and a growing evil presence. Bryan Bertino’s film is a strong fit for a slow, oppressive family-centered supernatural story rather than a campy shock ride. Shudder lists it as a Shudder Exclusive with a 95-minute runtime. Shudder’s film page.
2. When Evil Lurks — rural demonic horror
Shudder’s homepage currently promotes this story of a rural town whose residents discover that a demon is about to be born among them. That makes it a natural pick for demonic dread, but a homepage feature is not proof that the film is available on demand in every local library. Check the movie listing for your region before choosing it. Shudder’s homepage.
3. House of 1000 Corpses (2003) — grotesque, campy violence
Rob Zombie’s film follows two couples searching for the mythical Dr. Satan who encounter a real house of horrors. Shudder lists a 100-minute runtime and a TV-MA rating, and warns of strong language, sexual scenes, violence, and gore. Choose it for lurid, deliberately grotesque horror—not for restrained suspense. 4. Blood Feast (1963) — early gore and camp
In Herschell Gordon Lewis’s short film, a psychotic caterer prepares a feast using human body parts. Shudder lists a 67-minute runtime and describes it as campy by contemporary standards. Its place here is partly historical: expect an early gore curiosity with a camp edge, not the same style of dread as a modern slow burn. Shudder’s film page.
5. Cannibal Ferox (1981) — transgressive exploitation horror
Umberto Lenzi’s English-language film follows a drug dealer and researchers into a violent confrontation with a cannibal tribe; Shudder lists its runtime as 93 minutes. The premise and the film’s reputation point toward exploitation shock and extreme violence, not an easygoing creature feature. Shudder attributes this description to Sleazoid Express writer Bill Landis: “ultraviolent and unrelenting” and “an epochal event in horror movies.” Shudder’s film page.

6. Humanoids from the Deep (1980) — creature shock
Mutated humanoid creatures attack a fishing village in this creature feature, directed by Barbara Peeters and Jimmy T. Murakami. The premise also includes sexual assault, a content warning worth weighing before you press play. Pick it for monster-attack horror, not for a purely suspenseful sea-creature story. Shudder’s film page.
7. The New York Ripper (1982) — grimy slasher violence
Lucio Fulci’s film centers on a killer who targets women and commits graphic violence. Its sexualized violence makes this a particularly harsh option in the list; it is better approached as grim slasher material than as a playful midnight movie. Shudder’s film page.

8. Venom (1982) — contained creature thriller
In Piers Haggard’s setup, kidnappers and a child are trapped in a house with a black mamba while police surround the building. The confined setting gives the threat a different shape from possession or splatter: the central hook is a dangerous animal loose in a house. Shudder’s film page.
9. Slaughterhouse (1987) — rural slasher with camp potential
Rick Roessler’s slasher centers on a slaughterhouse owner and his son, with killings involving a cleaver. The premise makes this a fit for viewers who want a rural slasher setup, but it does not establish that everyone will find the film frightening. Its appeal may be more in its straightforward genre setup than in sustained supernatural unease. Shudder’s film page.

10. Tenderness of the Wolves (1973) — grim true-crime horror
Uli Lommel’s film is based on serial killer Fritz Haarmann. Shudder lists an 82-minute runtime and warns of sexual scenes, violence, and gore. Because the story draws on real crimes and victims, it belongs in a sober true-crime context—not as a novelty built around real people’s suffering. Shudder’s film page.
