10 Films With Notable Alternate Versions (Not a Definitive Ranking)

These ten films have notably different documented versions, from studio-imposed endings and director revisions to television assemblies and parallel language productions. The list is curated, not a proven ranking.

There is no reliable, apples-to-apples ranking of the films with the most alternate versions. The British Film Institute’s 2015 survey describes 45 examples but says it is not comprehensive; what counts as a “version” can range from a substantial recut to a regional edit or a television presentation. These ten cases stand out for their well-documented, materially different versions—not because they have been proved to be the ten with the highest totals.

If you’re asking “Which movies have the most alternate cuts?” or “What movies have multiple versions?”, start with the changes that matter: scenes added or removed, a different ending, changed narration or music, or a new format. The list below distinguishes those from routine dubbing and minor censorship trims. Its order is editorial, not a measured ranking.

How to compare alternate versions

“Alternate version” is not a standardized count. A theatrical release, a director-approved recut, a television edit, a regional version and a provisional workprint are not interchangeable categories. Even different running times do not, by themselves, show how extensively a film changed.

The table gives a compact guide to the documented versions and runtimes cited by the sources below. The entries explain what changed and why the distinctions matter. Runtime figures are attributed to their source and version; they should not be treated as a uniform census.

Film Documented version history Why the comparison needs care
Brazil (1985) BFI: 142-minute European, 131-minute American, and 93-minute television/theatrical versions, plus Terry Gilliam’s later “final final” cut. Criterion lists a separate 94-minute “Love Conquers All” version. The BFI’s 93-minute description and Criterion’s 94-minute feature are not identical labels or figures.
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) BFI: original theatrical version, 1980 Special Edition, and 1997 edit. The Special Edition is shorter than the original theatrical release despite adding material.
Blade Runner (1982) TCM describes the U.S. theatrical release, international cut, 1992 Director’s Cut, and 2007 Final Cut. Provisional workprints and previews can increase a count, but they are not public release cuts.
Apocalypse Now (1979) BFI documents the theatrical release, Apocalypse Now Redux (2001), and Apocalypse Now Final Cut (2019); the Academy also notes an alternate ending. Different release-print endings and alternate credit treatments should not automatically be counted as full feature cuts.
Das Boot (1981) BFI: 149-minute theatrical feature, 300-minute television miniseries, and 209-minute theatrical director’s cut. The miniseries is a different format, not simply another feature-length cut.
Dawn of the Dead (1978) BFI distinguishes Romero’s edit, Dario Argento’s edit for non-English-speaking territories, and an edition often called the “director’s cut.” A director’s-cut label does not establish that Romero approved or preferred that edition.
Cinema Paradiso (1988) BFI: 173-minute original version, an Italian release shortened by 18 minutes, and the familiar 124-minute version. The versions differ in story material, not only in length.
Dracula (1931) BFI compares Tod Browning’s English-language film with George Melford’s Spanish-language production, which runs more than 25 minutes longer. These were parallel language productions, not a later recut of one film.
The Gold Rush (1925; revised 1942) Chaplin substantially revised his silent film for the sound era, adding narration and a new score. This is a later revision by the filmmaker, rather than a studio intervention or an extended edition.
The Godfather films BFI notes the 1977 chronological television assembly of The Godfather and The Godfather Part II, titled The Godfather: A Novel for Television. It combines two features into a television presentation, so it is not a like-for-like cut of one film.

Ten films with especially notable alternate versions

Brazil: Gilliam’s film and the studio’s happier ending

The different versions of Terry Gilliam’s dystopian satire reflect a direct conflict over its ending and tone. The studio-backed “Love Conquers All” version changes the film’s bleak conclusion into a more optimistic one. Gilliam’s later “final final” cut represents his own preferred resolution of that dispute.

Criterion’s current special-edition page describes a director-approved 4K UHD and Blu-ray release and lists the studio version as a feature. That establishes the inclusion of that alternate ending in the edition; it does not establish that the release contains every theatrical version. The running-time labels also vary between the BFI’s account and Criterion’s feature listing, so they should not be silently collapsed into a single figure.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind: a special edition that cuts as well as adds

Steven Spielberg’s revisions are a useful corrective to the assumption that an “extended” or “special” edition simply adds footage. The 1980 Special Edition added character material and showed the interior of the alien mothership, but it also removed scenes. Columbia required the mothership-interior ending; in Spielberg’s 1997 edit, he removed that material while restoring footage.

The versions therefore represent different editorial choices, not a simple progression in which each release is longer or more complete than the last.

Blade Runner: narration, a changed ending and later restoration

The U.S. theatrical release included Rick Deckard’s narration and a studio-imposed happy ending. The 1992 Director’s Cut removed both and added the unicorn-dream sequence. Ridley Scott’s 2007 Final Cut made further revisions and restorations under his control.

Those public releases are a useful basis for comparison. Workprints and previews are sometimes brought into discussions of the film’s many versions, but including provisional material alongside released editions changes what the count means.

Apocalypse Now: distinct theatrical, expanded and revised presentations

Francis Ford Coppola’s film has circulated with differing endings in 1979 release prints. Apocalypse Now Redux adds material that the BFI measures at 49 minutes, while the later Final Cut is a separate presentation—not just another name for the theatrical release or for Redux. The Academy’s archive also highlights an alternate ending and the expanded version.

Coppola described the film’s relationship to its subject this way: “My film is not about Vietnam,” he said. “It is Vietnam.” The line helps explain why the film’s revisions are often discussed as changes in experience and emphasis, not merely as extra scenes.

Das Boot: feature cuts versus a television miniseries

Wolfgang Petersen’s story exists in markedly different viewing formats. The television miniseries restores character and atmosphere across a much longer presentation; Petersen’s later theatrical director’s cut reshapes the material for a single sitting. Comparing their runtimes as if they were equivalent feature edits misses that difference in format and purpose.

Dawn of the Dead: whose version is it?

George A. Romero’s edit and Dario Argento’s version for non-English-speaking territories differ in pacing, music, character development and emphasis. An additional edition is commonly labeled the “director’s cut,” but the BFI notes that Romero did not care for it. The case shows why a marketing or catalogue label alone cannot tell you who made, approved or preferred an edit.

Cinema Paradiso: the familiar release is not the whole story

The longer version preserves darker character and story material that was removed under commercial pressure. The more familiar shorter release is therefore not simply an inferior or incomplete form: it is a distinct editorial shape, while the longer version offers a different account of the characters and their choices.

Dracula: two productions in different languages

Tod Browning’s English-language film was made alongside George Melford’s Spanish-language version, with the latter filmed at night on the same sets. Melford’s film differs in visual staging and narrative treatment as well as length. It is best understood as a parallel production made for another language audience, not as a recut or director’s edition of Browning’s film.

The Gold Rush: Chaplin revises his own silent film

For the sound era, Charlie Chaplin reworked his silent feature by adding his own narration and a new score and changing how the film was presented. This is a different kind of alternate version from a studio-mandated rescue: the filmmaker returned to an earlier work and revised it for a new context.

The Godfather films: two features assembled for television

The Godfather: A Novel for Television puts the first two films into chronological order for a television presentation. It changes the viewing structure by assembling material from both features, rather than supplying a new cut of just one. A separate claim about theatrical and 1991 cuts of The Godfather Part III appears in Paramount search-result material for a 50th-anniversary collection, but the official page did not provide a directly verifiable product description; it is not a firm basis for adding another definitive version count here.

What the examples show about director’s cuts

A director’s cut is a useful label only when it is tied to a specific edition and its history. It does not automatically mean “the final version,” the longest version, or the version the filmmaker always preferred. Studio requirements, release territory, television format and later revisions can all produce materially different presentations.

For a meaningful comparison, identify the edition by name and release context, then ask what changed: scenes, ending, narration, music, order or format. That tells you more than a raw count of cuts or minutes.
