Sarah Michelle Gellar’s career began long before Buffy the Vampire Slayer: an agent reportedly spotted her at age five, and by 17 she was filming the show that would become her signature role. Her own accounts also reveal why Buffy’s monsters resonated, why she stepped back from acting, and how producing changed the way she could support younger performers.
1. An agent reportedly spotted her at a restaurant when she was five
Gellar’s path into acting began unusually early. In a 2023 profile, The Guardian reported that an agent noticed her at a restaurant when she was five, launching a career that would span commercials, television and film. The Guardian’s profile recounts the encounter.
2. Her small-screen debut was a Burger King commercial
The Guardian reports that Gellar appeared in a Burger King advertisement in 1981. The commercial criticized McDonald’s, and the profile says that led to a lifelong ban from the rival chain. Gellar joked that she did not know whether the ban still applied; the reported ban is an anecdote from the profile, not an independently confirmed policy.
3. She was a teenager when she started filming Buffy
According to The Guardian, Gellar moved west at 16 and filmed the Buffy the Vampire Slayer pilot at 17. That early start helps explain why she later spoke about the pressures of growing up while working in Hollywood. In a 2022 interview with The Irish Times, she said she would not want to be 17 again. 4. Buffy’s monsters stood for real adolescent fears
For Gellar, the supernatural threats in Buffy were more than creatures to defeat. “One of the things I loved most about Buffy was that the monsters were a metaphor for the horrors of adolescence,” she told Vogue in 2023. Discussing Wolf Pack, she connected its wolf metaphor to anxiety, isolation and communication—the kinds of struggles a fantastical story can make visible. Vogue’s interview explores those connections.
5. She once named “The Prom” her favorite Buffy episode
The Independent reported that Gellar had named “The Prom,” from season three, as her favorite Buffy episode. In it, Buffy’s classmates recognize her with a “Class Protector” award. That is a reported preference, not a claim that it remains her favorite today. The Independent’s interview covers her reflections on the series.

6. Robin Williams’s death helped prompt a personal reset
Gellar told The Guardian that the death of her The Crazy Ones co-star Robin Williams helped her reconsider the pace of her life. After years of nonstop work while raising young children, she felt she was missing too much at home. “When we lost Robin, it was this whole reset for me: ‘Everything’s going by really fast, and I’m missing it,’” she said. She described that loss as part of her reason for stepping back, not the only cause of a career pause.
7. She met Freddie Prinze Jr. while filming a horror movie
Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. connected while making I Know What You Did Last Summer, according to The Guardian and The Independent. They married in 2002. The film is an early chapter in a relationship that began on a set, rather than through one of Gellar’s later television projects.

8. She thought the Cruel Intentions TV reboot was the wrong format
A television project based on Cruel Intentions reached the network-pilot stage, but Gellar later said the format did not work for her as a network show. In her 2022 Irish Times interview, she said she was grateful it did not go forward. That is her retrospective view of that particular pilot, rather than a general judgment about adaptations of the film.
9. Producing let her advocate for younger performers
On Wolf Pack, Gellar had an executive producer role as well as a starring part. She told The Irish Times that she asked production to route conversations with young cast members through her, giving them a channel to raise concerns. In The Guardian, she described bringing experience and ideas to the set: “I’ve been doing this for 40 years. I have a lot of experience, and I have a lot to bring to the table.”

10. She has spoken about how limited women’s roles could be
Gellar has described the narrow choices she encountered early in her career. “There weren’t great female roles when I came up. It was the girlfriend role, the wife role,” she told The Irish Times. She contrasted those parts with projects such as Buffy and I Know What You Did Last Summer, where women had more to do. It is her account of the roles available to her, and one reason her most recognizable work still stands out for placing a young woman at the center of the story.
