Alicia Silverstone is still closely associated with Cher Horowitz, the confident Beverly Hills teenager she played in Clueless. But the film’s literary roots, Silverstone’s own memories of its demanding wardrobe, and her writing and animal advocacy reveal more than the familiar on-screen persona.
1. Cher Horowitz remains her signature role
Silverstone played Cher in Clueless, the comedy set among teenagers in Beverly Hills. The part became the role most closely associated with her public profile, as the British Film Institute (BFI) noted in its 2025 anniversary interview. Read the BFI interview.

2. Clueless drew on Jane Austen’s Emma
Writer-director Amy Heckerling has described Jane Austen’s novel as an inspiration for the film. She moved the story into a modern Beverly Hills setting; that makes Clueless a reworking of Austen’s premise, not a scene-for-scene adaptation. Heckerling discussed the connection in interviews with the BFI and The Guardian. BFI interview; The Guardian interview.
3. Silverstone recalled 64 costume changes
In a 2020 Vogue interview, Silverstone recalled having 64 costume changes while playing the lead in Clueless. She summed up the workload by saying, “I was the lead in this and I had sixty-four costume changes, so I didn’t have a life.” That figure is her recollection, not an independently audited production count. 4. The attention around the film led her toward activism for a time
Silverstone told Vogue that the intense response to Clueless made her more interested in activism for a period. She also said she later rediscovered her love of acting. This is her account of that stretch of her career, rather than a complete explanation of every role or choice that followed. Her interview with Vogue describes the shift.
5. She wrote The Kind Diet
Silverstone is the author of The Kind Diet, a book about her reasons for adopting a vegan diet. Penguin Random House lists it among her books, and PETA has also discussed the book and its subject. Its existence is a fact about Silverstone’s writing and advocacy—not a medical endorsement or evidence that a particular diet suits everyone. Penguin Random House author page; PETA feature.
6. The Kind Mama is another of her books
Penguin Random House also lists The Kind Mama as a book by Silverstone. The publisher listing establishes her authorship; it should not be read as independent medical or parenting advice. See her publisher listing.
7. She joined a campaign about vegan-milk surcharges
The Humane League reported that Silverstone joined other activists in 2021 to pressure Starbucks to remove its extra charge for vegan milk. The campaign is a dated example of her public advocacy, not evidence of a current campaign or policy. The Humane League’s account.

8. Animal-advocacy organizations have worked with her
The Humane League describes Silverstone’s advocacy as including partnerships with Farm Sanctuary and PETA. That is the organization’s characterization of her work; it does not establish that she currently holds a formal role with either group. Read the organization’s account.
9. Heckerling wanted Cher’s optimism to be unshakable
Heckerling described Cher’s sunny outlook as a deliberate part of the character’s design. “I wanted to do something where a character was so positive that they were right, and so happy with what was going on, that you could not burst their bubble,” the director told the BFI. The line helps explain why Cher’s confidence is central to the film’s tone. Read Heckerling’s BFI interview.

10. Silverstone said she was not simply Cher off-screen
In her Vogue interview, Silverstone distinguished herself from Cher, describing the role as a character and saying she did not identify with that kind of girl. It is a useful reminder that playing an instantly recognizable part does not mean sharing its personality. Her Vogue interview.
