Masashi Kishimoto has spoken about the influences and choices behind his work; the panel observations below are close readings, not claims that he intended each detail as a hidden message.
What makes Naruto’s art style distinctive?
Kishimoto has described an early preference that helps explain the manga’s visual character: “There was something about his cartoony drawing style that felt right, more so than realistic drawings.” He was talking about Akira Toriyama, whose Dr. Slump anime and Dragon Ball manga helped draw him toward manga. That testimony places Naruto in a stylized tradition, but it does not mean any particular feature was copied from Toriyama. Read Kishimoto’s VIZ interview.
Use these ten observations as prompts while reading. The examples identify things to inspect in the manga; interpretations of what a composition achieves are analysis, not explanations Kishimoto gave for individual panels.
10 details to look for in the manga
1. Cartoon-like expressions carry emotion
Look at how faces change between moments of tension, embarrassment, anger and humor. The stylized approach Kishimoto said appealed to him leaves room for emphatic expressions rather than aiming at realistic likeness. The useful question is not whether a face is realistic, but how its shape and expression make a character’s feeling legible.

2. A character can take shape as the artist draws
In a 2016 discussion, Kishimoto said he might begin with a very rough sketch on B5 paper, trying to put an idea down before he felt anything for the character. He pictured the person he wanted to create, including how they spoke and what their personality was like, but said there was no fixed order. Under deadline, he might decide things while drawing and understand the character after finishing. This is a flexible process, not a universal design recipe. Kishimoto on character creation.
3. Flaws make personality visible
Kishimoto said, “Giving a character a flaw makes them feel more human. I personally don’t like people who are too perfect.” When rereading, notice how an expression, posture or reaction can make a weakness feel like part of a person rather than a label. The connection between any particular character’s design and a specific flaw is an interpretation unless Kishimoto has discussed that example directly.

4. Long-distance views change the scale of a scene
Kishimoto said he enjoys “drawing long-distance and wide-lens shots and experimenting with depth of field.” In a wide view, compare a character’s size with buildings, landscape or other figures around them. A close reading might see that contrast as making a person seem isolated, small or surrounded; it should not be mistaken for a stated explanation of the panel’s intent. Kishimoto on framing and worldbuilding.
5. Foreground and background create depth on a flat page
In a panel with overlapping figures or objects, track what appears nearest, what recedes and where the eye lands. Kishimoto’s interest in depth of field gives readers a reason to pay attention to those choices. “Wide-lens” is his own analogy and vocabulary; a manga page is not literally photographed through a camera lens.

6. A scene’s framing is a choice about what to show
When discussing the large war storyline, Kishimoto said he wanted to pay attention to every character but had to choose what to omit and what to show. He also noted that the war’s history and background needed careful elaboration to feel believable. That makes selection itself worth noticing: which characters, actions or setting details receive space in a panel or sequence? It does not establish why any individual panel includes or leaves something out. Kishimoto on the war storyline.
7. Ordinary details anchor extraordinary events
Kishimoto agreed that electric poles appear in chapter 1, connecting the fantasy setting to recognizable reality. Look for the contrast between such everyday infrastructure and the extraordinary ninja world around it. The detail is especially useful to notice because it does not need an explanation to make the setting feel more familiar.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
8. Emotional problems make the fantasy relatable
Kishimoto described empathy as a way for readers to enter an invented world: “The way to bring reality, or rather, to allow the reader to enter the world you created is to make them feel empathy. It really is.” He pointed to recognizable concerns such as loneliness and family problems. This suggests a close-reading lens: consider how a fantastical event is grounded in a feeling readers understand, without claiming every plot or panel follows one formula.
9. Manga and animation make images differently
Kishimoto described manga and animation as different processes, noting the amount of material animators must draw and their attention to lens and angles. A manga panel fixes a composition on the page; animation unfolds images over time. The anime should not be treated as a simple copy of every manga choice, and the interview does not establish why a particular scene differs between versions.

10. Mood can influence what ends up on the page
Kishimoto recalled that listening to emotionally sad music could make his manga reflect that sadness, sometimes in a way that felt wrong when he reviewed the drawings later. He described checking whether the mood of the work matched what he intended. This is a process detail, not evidence that he used a particular soundtrack while drawing a specific Naruto scene. His interview also discusses personal influence and mood.
