What Chainsaw Man chapters prove Makima is shonen’s greatest villain? These ten make the case by tracing how her power grows from personal authority into control over Denji’s choices, his relationships, and the meaning of Chainsaw Man itself. This is an interpretive selection, not an official or fan-voted ranking. The late conflict spans volumes 10 and 11, where the publisher’s descriptions frame the convergence of Makima’s intentions and the Chainsaw Devil’s secret, followed by a final confrontation with Denji. Shueisha’s Volume 10 listing and Volume 11 listing establish that broad progression.
Spoilers: The chapters below reveal major turns in the first Makima conflict, including its conclusion.
How these chapters build the case
Makima’s effectiveness as a villain is cumulative. The story first makes her authority feel close and reassuring; then it shows how far that authority reaches and what it costs Denji. The final stretch reframes the conflict around control, desire, and what Chainsaw Man means to the people fighting over him.
The chapters are considered on three interpretive axes: revelation (what changes in our understanding of Makima), agency (how Denji’s ability to choose or resist is affected), and payoff (how the moment prepares or completes a later turn). The official listings support the late-volume frame, but do not provide exhaustive summaries of every chapter below. These are close-reading arguments, not publisher-confirmed chapter descriptions.

Ten chapters that reveal Makima’s villainy
1. Chapter 1: the power imbalance begins
The opening chapter establishes the terms of Denji’s life before Makima becomes its apparent solution. He is desperate, indebted, and short on choices. When she enters his story, the difference between offering help and exercising power is already difficult for him to test: his survival depends on accepting the arrangement in front of him.
Revelation: Makima’s authority is compelling partly because it arrives as rescue. Agency: Denji’s choices are constrained before he can meaningfully negotiate them. Payoff: The unequal starting point makes later questions about consent and control more than abstract villain theatrics.
2. Chapter 22: authority becomes intimate
Makima’s influence over Denji is not limited to commands or the organization’s chain of authority. The chapter develops the emotional pull of her attention: Denji wants approval and closeness, which makes obedience feel like a route to something he genuinely desires.
Revelation: Her power works through personal attachment as well as institutional position. Agency: Denji’s own hopes can be used to steer him. Payoff: This intimacy gives later manipulation its force; the relationship cannot be reduced to a simple contest between a strong villain and a strong hero.
3. Chapter 32: Denji’s wants become leverage
By this point, Denji’s longing for ordinary pleasures and affection has become a visible part of how he makes decisions. The chapter matters to the Makima argument because it shows how easily a person with power can shape the horizon of someone whose life has offered so little.

Revelation: Makima’s influence is most unsettling when it aligns with desires Denji already has. Agency: Wanting something does not automatically mean Denji is free to pursue it on equal terms. Payoff: The story lays groundwork for distinguishing what Denji chooses from what has been arranged for him.
4. Chapter 52: the reach of her influence widens
The conflict around Makima is not confined to private exchanges with Denji. This chapter helps widen the reader’s sense of the forces she can affect and the stakes of being inside her orbit. Her power increasingly appears as something that can shape the lives and loyalties of people beyond the central pair.
Revelation: Makima’s reach extends beyond the relationship that first made her seem benevolent. Agency: The people around Denji become part of the pressure on his choices. Payoff: The eventual confrontation feels larger than a personal betrayal because the surrounding world has also been drawn into her plans.
5. Chapter 75: the story turns toward her intentions
The late arc begins to make clear that the apparent surface of Makima’s role is not enough to explain her actions. The chapter builds dread by shifting the reader’s attention from what she says or seems to offer to what her position and behavior may actually mean.
Revelation: The gap between Makima’s public-facing role and her real intentions becomes central. Agency: Denji’s understanding is still incomplete, leaving him vulnerable to decisions made with information he does not have. Payoff: This turn prepares the late-volume convergence of Makima’s intentions and the Chainsaw Devil’s secret described in the publisher’s Volume 10 synopsis.

6. Chapter 81: the personal cost comes into focus
Chapter 81 falls within Volume 10, whose official synopsis points toward the revelation of Makima’s intentions and the Chainsaw Devil’s secret. Read in that context, the chapter is a hinge: what has seemed like an intimate struggle over Denji’s future becomes inseparable from a larger conflict over Chainsaw Man.
Revelation: Makima’s aims must be understood in relation to Chainsaw Man, not only Denji. Agency: The people Denji loves and depends on are part of the stakes, narrowing the space in which he can act without loss. Payoff: The shift makes the coming conflict ideological as well as emotional.

7. Chapter 84: control becomes the subject
Here the story brings the idea of control into sharper focus. Makima’s threat is not simply that she can defeat opponents; it is that she can define what others are for and what they are allowed to mean. The chapter makes her worldview part of the conflict rather than a hidden motive behind it.
Revelation: Control is central to how Makima understands power and the world she wants. Agency: Denji and others risk being treated as instruments rather than people with independent purposes. Payoff: The final struggle becomes a clash over the use and meaning of Chainsaw Man, not merely a battle to survive.
8. Chapter 87: the stakes converge
As the endgame approaches, the story draws together the personal and larger-scale strands of Makima’s plan. What she wants from Chainsaw Man and what Denji stands to lose increasingly occupy the same dramatic space.

Revelation: Makima’s ambition and her view of Chainsaw Man are now difficult to separate. Agency: Denji faces a conflict whose terms have been shaped by losses and power he did not control. Payoff: The chapter tightens the path toward the confrontation that Volume 11’s synopsis describes.
9. Chapter 95: the final confrontation tests the premise
The confrontation in the closing stretch tests the core of Makima’s worldview: whether a person can be reduced to a role, an object of control, or a means to a desired outcome. The conflict is most revealing when read not just as a contest of strength but as a question about what Makima believes she is entitled to do.
Revelation: Her power is bound up with a vision of how the world should be ordered. Agency: Denji’s resistance must answer more than physical force; it must confront the terms on which Makima has tried to define him. Payoff: The conflict’s emotional conclusion depends on the story’s earlier work making Denji’s desires and attachments matter.
10. Chapter 96: “Such a Taste”
Shueisha’s Volume 11 listing includes chapter 96 under the Japanese title “こんな味,” translated in that listing as “Such a Taste.” The volume description frames Makima’s control as pressing Denji toward a bloody final confrontation. The chapter’s place in that conclusion makes it a fitting final pick: the story’s answer to Makima is not just about who holds power, but what kind of relationship can exist when one person has tried to turn another into an object.
Revelation: Makima’s control has consequences that reach into the most personal register of the conflict. Agency: Denji’s response matters because the story has spent so long showing how little room he has had to choose freely. Payoff: The ending gives emotional weight to the question posed from the beginning: can Denji be seen and treated as a person, rather than as a means to someone else’s ideal?

Where the late conflict appears in the official volumes
The official volume listings provide useful orientation, not a definitive chapter ranking or a full chapter-by-chapter guide. Shueisha lists Volume 10 as released in print and digitally on January 4, 2021, and includes chapter 81. Its synopsis describes Makima’s real intentions and the Chainsaw Devil’s secret converging. Volume 11 was released in print and digitally on March 4, 2021, and lists chapters 89–97, including chapter 96. Its synopsis describes Makima’s control pushing Denji toward a bloody confrontation.

Why the argument depends on the full arc
Makima’s case as a great villain does not rest on one shocking reveal. It rests on how the story makes her authority attractive before exposing its reach, and how it connects that reach to Denji’s longing for affection, security, and a life of his own. The final conflict then enlarges the question: Makima is not only trying to control a person, but to impose her purpose on Chainsaw Man and the world around him.
That progression is why these ten chapters belong together. The opening makes Denji’s dependence legible; the middle shows how intimacy and influence can become instruments; the late chapters make the cost and the ideology explicit. The conclusion matters because it answers the emotional problem the story has been building, rather than merely ending a fight.
