Only a few of these ten people have clearly said they would refuse a superhero project. Others have expressed reluctance, ruled out returning, or criticized the experience after taking a role. The distinctions matter: Stephen Dorff, for example, appeared in Blade, while Christian Bale, Anthony Hopkins, and Mickey Rourke all took part in superhero films. Here is what each person actually said, and what it does—and does not—show.

What “refuse” means in this list

A firm refusal of one film is not the same as a general rejection of a genre. The examples below range from Dorff’s direct rejection of contemporary Marvel-style movies to actors’ personal preferences and criticisms made after they had already appeared in superhero productions. Tim Burton is included as a director, not an actor.

People who have expressed reluctance or a clear lack of interest

Stephen Dorff: rejected Black Widow and similar films

Dorff said he did not want to appear in Black Widow and, of contemporary Marvel-style movies, “I don’t want to be in those movies. I really don’t.” He said he would rather seek out work with an emerging director. That is a direct statement about the kind of franchise filmmaking he was discussing—not a lifetime refusal of superhero films: Dorff starred in the 1998 movie Blade. The Independent’s May 4, 2024 roundup reports his comments.

Kristen Stewart: unlikely to do Marvel, with a named exception

Stewart said, “I will likely never do a Marvel movie,” and described the prospect as a “f—ing nightmare.” Her objection was about the creative process as she sees it: she argued that a filmmaker would need substantial money and trust to make a distinctive film, rather than work within a system that can feel algorithmic and impersonal. But her position is conditional, not absolute. She added, “If Greta Gerwig asked me to do a Marvel movie, then I would do it.” The Los Angeles Times reported her January 2024 podcast comments on March 28, 2024.

Amanda Seyfried: not drawn to the physical and technical demands

Seyfried has said she had no interest in the physical demands or green-screen work involved in a superhero project. Discussing the possibility of playing Gamora, she also cited not wanting to be green and the time required for makeup. She has not framed that preference as a judgment that superhero films are worthless: she praised their ability to transport audiences and said the work is not for everybody. ComicBook.com’s report covers her comments, including remarks to the Associated Press.

Ben Affleck: not interested in returning to the genre

In a 2025 interview with GQ, Affleck said he had lost interest in what had appealed to him about superhero films and was not interested in returning to the genre. He also made clear that his difficult experience playing Batman was not the sole reason. This is a statement about going back to that kind of work, not a claim that he has never participated. Variety Australia reported his comments on March 26, 2025.

Jennifer Aniston: wary of green-screen work, not a confirmed refuser

Aniston said she was not especially interested in “living in a green screen” while discussing how the projects available to actors have changed. Those remarks establish a production preference, not a permanent refusal of superhero movies. The Independent’s roundup reports the comment.

A filmmaker’s reluctance

Tim Burton: not currently interested in directing another superhero film

Burton’s position concerns directing, so it should not be mistaken for an actor declining a part. He contrasted the more experimental approach he brought to his Batman films with the franchise expectations and increased studio feedback that followed. He said, “I come at things from different points of view, so I would never say never to anything. But, at the moment, it’s not something I’d be interested in.” The Independent reported his remarks to the BBC in October 2024.

Criticism is not the same as refusing a superhero role

Brad Pitt: warned actors not to feel they need a franchise

Pitt advised younger actors not to think they “have to have a franchise” or “have to have a superhero.” That is career advice, not a categorical statement that he would never take part in a superhero film. In fact, the report notes his cameo in Deadpool 2. Hindustan Times reported his comments from the New Heights podcast on July 3, 2025.

Christian Bale: described a difficult experience after taking a role

Bale called making Thor: Love and Thunder monotonous and disorienting. Because he played Gorr in the film, those comments describe a production experience—not a refusal to make superhero movies.

Anthony Hopkins: criticized green-screen acting after multiple roles

Hopkins criticized the experience of acting in front of a green screen in Thor. He appeared in multiple Marvel Cinematic Universe films, so his dissatisfaction should be understood as criticism after participation, not evidence that he refused the genre.

Mickey Rourke: objected to how his Iron Man 2 scenes were handled

After disputing how his scenes were cut, Rourke said he did not want to be part of “mindless comic book movies.” He had already played Whiplash in Iron Man 2; the remark was a criticism tied to that experience, not proof of a longstanding refusal. The examples involving Bale, Hopkins, and Rourke are covered in The Independent’s roundup.

Why the reasons differ

  • Creative control: Stewart questioned whether a large franchise system can give a filmmaker enough trust and freedom.
  • Production demands: Seyfried cited physical work, green screen, and makeup; Aniston expressed disinterest in living on a green-screen set.
  • Career priorities: Pitt’s point was that young actors need not chase a franchise to build a career.
  • Past experience: Bale, Hopkins, and Rourke criticized aspects of productions they had already joined, while Affleck said his Batman experience was not the only reason he did not want to return.
  • Scope of the statement: Dorff named a specific film and similar contemporary movies; Stewart named an exception; Burton spoke as a director and left the door open in principle.
