Public evidence does not establish a definitive list of 10 celebrities in Eddie Murphy’s inner circle or 10 who stay away. It does support a few specific relationship stories: Murphy and Arsenio Hall have described a friendship spanning decades; a 1998 profile called producer Brian Grazer Murphy’s close friend and business partner; and David Spade recounted a disagreement that was later apparently repaired. Other names connected to Murphy’s 2025 documentary are interviewees and professional peers, not automatically close friends.
Why a reliable “10 and 10” list does not exist
“Inner circle” is subjective, and a public appearance, shared project or documentary interview cannot show who belongs to someone’s private circle. The available reporting does not identify 10 celebrities who are currently close to Murphy, nor 10 who deliberately avoid him. It offers a small number of attributable accounts, with different levels of evidence and different dates.
Murphy put the subject generally in a 2023 interview: “As you get older your circle gets smaller and smaller.” The comment is a reflection on friendship, not a disclosure that he had cut off any particular person. UPI reported the remark on January 26, 2023.
People with documented friendship or relationship stories
| Person | What the public record supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Arsenio Hall | Murphy and Hall have both described a friendship lasting decades, alongside their professional collaboration. | That infrequent visits or private lives apart mean they are estranged. |
| Brian Grazer | A 1998 Los Angeles Times profile described Grazer as Murphy’s close friend and business partner, in the context of their work together. | Their present-day relationship status. |
| David Spade | Spade recalled a conflict after a joke and a later encounter ending in a handshake, suggesting the disagreement was repaired. | That Spade currently stays away from Murphy. |
Arsenio Hall: the clearest longtime-friend example
In 2023, Murphy said he and Hall had been friends for more than 40 years. He joked that Hall had visited his home only once and was mysterious about his own home. Those remarks were playful anecdotes within a friendship, not evidence of distance. In a 2021 interview, Murphy said there had never been a period when they were not friends; Hall described them as comfortable sharing different experiences. UPI’s 2023 account and The Independent’s 2021 interview provide the attributed accounts.

Brian Grazer: a well-documented historical bond
A Los Angeles Times profile published March 13, 1998 described producer Brian Grazer as Murphy’s close friend and business partner. Their relationship developed through projects including Boomerang and The Nutty Professor. This is solid historical reporting, but it is not a current check of their private relationship.
David Spade: a past disagreement, not a current “stay away” claim
Spade’s account describes Murphy confronting him after a joke, followed by a later meeting and handshake. That supports describing a public conflict that appears to have been resolved; it does not support presenting Spade as someone who now avoids Murphy. CBS News recounted Spade’s account in 2015.
What Being Eddie can—and cannot—tell us
Netflix’s 2025 documentary Being Eddie includes Murphy and people reflecting on his life and career. Netflix names Adam Sandler, Arsenio Hall, Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, Jamie Foxx, Jerry Seinfeld, Kevin Hart, Pete Davidson, Tracee Ellis Ross and Tracy Morgan among its interviewees. That makes them documentary participants or professional peers; participation alone does not establish a private friendship. See the Netflix Media Center title page and Netflix Tudum’s documentary feature.
Tudum also reports that Murphy already owned puppets representing comedian Paul Mooney and singer Val Young. Murphy described Young as an old friend. This is a specific detail about Young and a personal tribute to Mooney, not evidence for a ranked celebrity roster. Netflix Tudum’s November 12, 2025 feature covers the detail.

Who actually stays away from Eddie Murphy?
The sources cited here do not establish a group of celebrities who currently avoid Murphy. Spade’s story is the only described public conflict in this evidence, and it includes a later handshake. Hall’s rare visits and Murphy’s joke about Hall’s privacy do not show estrangement. Without direct, attributable reporting of an ongoing rift or avoidance, assigning anyone to a “stay away” list would turn speculation into fact.
