These ten public figures have documented connections to climate advocacy, but they do not all do the same work. Some have led visible campaigns; others are listed in United Nations roles focused on environmental or sustainability advocacy. This is an editorial selection, not a ranking of impact: the available sources do not establish a shared measure for comparing their effectiveness.

The United Nations describes its Climate Action Advocates directory as a group of people working with the UN system to advocate climate action and a more sustainable world. The directory includes people with differing roles; an appointment is evidence of an institutional advocacy connection, not by itself proof of a particular campaign or its results.
Campaigns and public action
Leonardo DiCaprio: foundation work and a UN climate role
The UN says DiCaprio founded the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation in 1998 to support biodiversity and habitat conservation and climate change solutions. Its profile describes grantmaking, public campaigns and media projects. The UN also named him a Messenger of Peace for climate change. In the 2014 appointment announcement, then-Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called him “a credible voice in the environmental movement, and has a considerable platform to amplify its message.” The UN profile of Leonardo DiCaprio and the 2014 UN appointment announcement document those roles. This record spans climate advocacy and broader conservation work.
Greta Thunberg: school strikes that galvanized youth
UNESCO reports that Thunberg began striking from school outside Sweden’s parliament in August 2018 to draw attention to the climate crisis. Its account describes how the action resonated with youth climate mobilization and galvanized millions of followers; that figure is part of UNESCO’s historical description, not a current follower count. UNESCO’s Generation Greta feature traces the strike’s place in a wider movement rather than presenting Thunberg as a climate scientist.

Jane Fonda: protest and pressure on elected officials
Fonda founded Fire Drill Fridays with Greenpeace USA in 2019 to demand legislative action, according to TIME. In a 2024 interview, she described the campaign as a way to bring ordinary people into civil disobedience and argued that climate concern should influence voting and political pressure. “So Fire Drill Fridays was addressed to the great unasked,” she said. Read the TIME interview with Jane Fonda.
UN goodwill ambassadors: what the listed roles do—and do not—show
Gisele Bündchen, Don Cheadle and Ellie Goulding
The UN directory lists Bündchen, Cheadle and Goulding as UNEP Goodwill Ambassadors-Global. That supports describing each as holding a UN environmental advocacy role. The directory information cited here does not provide a climate-specific campaign chronology for these three, so it would overstate the evidence to attach a particular campaign or outcome to their names.

Jack Johnson
The directory lists Johnson as a UNEP Goodwill Ambassador for North America. The regional designation is the concrete fact established by the listing; it does not, by itself, establish a specific climate campaign.
Michelle Yeoh
Yeoh is listed as a UNDP Goodwill Ambassador. This is a UN development and sustainability-advocacy connection, not evidence in the cited directory of a particular climate-focused project.

Aidan Gallagher and Adrian Grenier
The UN directory lists Gallagher and Grenier as UNEP Goodwill Ambassadors. Those appointments document institutional environmental advocacy roles; the listing cited here does not supply a detailed climate campaign history for either person.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What counts as evidence of climate activism?
The examples above vary in how specifically the cited sources document action. UNESCO describes the origin and wider resonance of Thunberg’s school strike; TIME records Fonda’s campaign purpose and her account of political engagement; the UN profile describes DiCaprio’s foundation and advocacy work. For several others, the documented evidence here is their place in a UN directory rather than a named climate campaign.

That distinction matters: celebrity advocates can use public platforms, organize protest, support institutions or hold ambassador roles, but those activities do not make them climate scientists. Nor does a role alone show how much emissions have been reduced or policy changed. The UN list is a directory, not a top-ten ranking, and includes other public figures as well; these ten are not uniquely designated as the most influential.
