The best place to get a free ebook depends on whether you want to keep a file, borrow a current title, or read a book online. For downloadable classics, start with Project Gutenberg or Standard Ebooks. For current commercial books, use Libby through a participating public library; for textbooks, use OpenStax. Not every site below offers permanent downloads, and a free listing does not mean a book is free of copyright.
Choose the right kind of free ebook access
“Free” can mean several different things: a file you can keep, a temporary loan, browser-only reading, a preview, or a time-limited promotion. The distinction matters most for newer books, which are generally available free through library borrowing or a publisher-authorized offer rather than as permanent unrestricted downloads.
| Website | Best for | What access usually means | Account or membership |
|---|---|---|---|
| Project Gutenberg | Public-domain classics | Download or read online; many files can be kept | No account for standard catalog access |
| Standard Ebooks | Polished classic editions | Downloadable editions of selected public-domain books | Usually no account |
| Internet Archive | Scans and archival material | Varies: open download, online reading, or lending | May be needed for borrowing |
| Open Library | Borrowing hard-to-find books | Time-limited digital loan for selected editions | Account required to borrow |
| Google Books | Book discovery and full-view titles | Full reading or download only where enabled | Varies by title and access option |
| ManyBooks | Genre browsing and independent titles | Title-specific; free and discounted offers coexist | Varies |
| OpenStax | School and college textbooks | Free, openly licensed core textbooks, with web and download access depending on title | Usually no account for textbook access |
| DOAB | Scholarly books | Directory links to publisher access; formats and licenses vary | Usually no account to search |
| HathiTrust Digital Library | Historical and research material | Full view or download where rights permit; other items are restricted | Some functions depend on institutional access |
| Libby by OverDrive | Current books borrowed from libraries | Temporary library loan, not permanent ownership | Participating library card generally required |
10 legitimate websites for free ebooks
1. Project Gutenberg: best overall for public-domain classics
Project Gutenberg is the strongest starting point for classic fiction, poetry, drama, philosophy, history, and older nonfiction. Its standard catalog can be used without payment or registration, and book pages offer formats such as EPUB, Kindle-compatible files, HTML, and plain text where available.
To get a book, search by title, author, subject, or language, open its title page, and select a listed format. The site also explains options for reading on ereaders and transferring books to services such as Google Play Books: Project Gutenberg reading options.

Project Gutenberg focuses on works believed to be in the U.S. public domain. Copyright status can differ in other countries, and the site’s distribution and trademark conditions are separate from the underlying work’s copyright status; consult its license information. Expect older editions, spelling, or formatting, and do not expect a catalog of current commercial releases.
2. Standard Ebooks: best-formatted classic literature
Standard Ebooks produces a more curated collection of public-domain books, with attention to proofreading, typography, navigation, metadata, and accessibility. Choose it when you want an especially clean reading experience on an ereader or in a browser.
Its collection is smaller than Project Gutenberg’s, so a title may be available on Gutenberg but not yet in a Standard Ebooks edition. It is a quality-focused alternative for selected classics, rather than the broadest archive.
3. Internet Archive: best for scans and archival books
The Internet Archive text collection includes digitized books, historical scans, and other material. Some items have unrestricted downloads; others can be read online or borrowed under access controls. Check the individual item’s access information before assuming a search result is a file you may keep.

Scanned PDFs can preserve original page layout, which is useful for archival research and illustrated material, but they can be large and uncomfortable on a phone. Optical character recognition may also introduce errors. When a title is available as both a scan and a clean reflowable edition, the latter is often easier for ordinary reading.
4. Open Library: best for borrowing hard-to-find books
Open Library combines a searchable book catalog with borrowing for selected digitized editions. It is useful for finding older or out-of-print books that are not offered as unrestricted files elsewhere.
Sign in, find an edition, and use its Borrow or Read option if available. Open Library explains that selected books are made available through a lending model, generally to one reader at a time; see its borrowing FAQ. A loan is not the same as owning a permanent EPUB or PDF: access may be time-limited, edition-dependent, and unavailable while copies are checked out. The legal status of controlled digital lending has been contested, so do not mistake every catalog entry for a copyright-free download.
5. Google Books: best for discovery and full-view books
Google Books is primarily a large book-search and reading platform, not a promise that every result can be downloaded. Search for a title or author, then check whether it is available in full view and whether a download option is actually provided.
Rank #3
- Stepless Dimming & 3 Color Modes: Mixed Light, White Light and Amber Light. Short press the button to change the mode, long press to adjust the brightness from 10% to 100%. You can easily combine color temperature and brightness to meet different needs.

- Light and Portable: Small size and flexible design makes it easy to carry and store in a backpack without taking up space. Whether you are on the go or at home, the stepless dimming book light will be a great choice for your night reading
Some books are previews or snippets, and other results are paid titles. Download availability depends on copyright status and rights-holder settings; if there is no download option, use the result for discovery or preview rather than looking for a workaround.
6. ManyBooks: best for genre browsing and independent titles
ManyBooks is aimed at readers browsing genres such as romance, mystery, science fiction, fantasy, nonfiction, and children’s books. Its homepage stated that it offered more than 50,000 free ebooks when checked on August 16–18, 2026; that is the site’s own changing catalog claim, not a permanent count.
The service also presents discounted titles and promotions alongside free books. Check the specific book’s price and available format before selecting it. Rights basis, quality, and availability vary by title, so ManyBooks is not interchangeable with a public-domain archive.
7. OpenStax: best for free school and college textbooks
OpenStax’s subject catalog offers peer-reviewed, openly licensed textbooks and learning resources across subjects including biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, economics, psychology, and sociology. Core books are free, with web and downloadable access depending on the title.
Rank #4

- Eye Protecting Reading Light: No flicker, no shadow, no dizzy light. Provide a natural and soft light which won’t strain your eyes even after long hours of use. Enjoy your reading time without disturbing your partner or roommate
- 1000 mAh Battery: Built-in 1000 mAh battery only takes about 2.5 hours to get a full charge and support up to 80 hours lighting at lowest brightness. 4 LED indicator lights will always show the remaining power of the light
- 360° Flexible Neck & Sturdy Clip: 360° bendable goose neck can be rotated to any angle you want. Anti-skid clip design makes it firmly clamp on an e-reader, books, shelf, etc
- Portable and Widely Use: Lightweight and sturdy book light can stand independently with the anti-slip pad on the bottom. Free your hands to enjoy bedtime reading, working, traveling, camping etc
Use it for course material, not general fiction. Check the license for the particular textbook before adapting or redistributing it. Some supplementary tools or instructor products may be paid even when the core text is free.
8. DOAB: best for scholarly books
The Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB) helps readers discover scholarly, peer-reviewed open-access books. Its homepage reported more than 100,000 academic books when checked on August 16–18, 2026; the count can change.
DOAB is a discovery directory, so the actual book may be hosted by its publisher rather than downloaded from DOAB itself. Follow the title link, review the publisher’s access options, and inspect the individual license: open access does not mean every book permits commercial reuse or adaptation.
9. HathiTrust Digital Library: best for historical research
HathiTrust is a large digitized research collection, with access to full-view historical and public-domain material where copyright allows. It is particularly useful for researchers looking for older editions and primary sources.

Not every item is fully viewable or downloadable. The rights status governs access, and some features are more useful to institutional users than casual readers. Treat it as a research library with selected free full-view works, not a universal ebook download site.
10. Libby by OverDrive: best for borrowing current books
Libby connects readers to ebooks and other digital media from participating public libraries. It is often the best legal route to newer commercial books without buying them, though a title may have a waitlist or may not be licensed by a particular library.
Get a card from a participating library, add it in Libby, search the library’s collection, and borrow a copy or place a hold. Loans and availability depend on the library’s policies and publisher licenses. A borrowed ebook is temporary access, not a file you own permanently; delivery options for ereaders also vary by title, device, publisher, and country. The Library of Congress outlines library ebook routes, including Libby, in its ebook resources guide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which site should you use?
- Classic novel or poem to keep: Start with Project Gutenberg; check Standard Ebooks for a polished edition.
- Newer bestseller: Search Libby through your public library and expect borrowing or a waitlist, not permanent ownership.
- Rare scan or historical edition: Search the Internet Archive or HathiTrust and check the item’s access status.
- Out-of-print title to borrow: Try Open Library and look for an available lending edition.
- Textbook: Search OpenStax by subject.
- Peer-reviewed academic book: Find it through DOAB, then verify access and license at the publisher.
- Independent genre title: Browse ManyBooks and verify that the individual book is currently free.
- Uncertain title or edition: Use Google Books to search and check whether full reading or a permitted download is offered.
Pick a format that suits your device
- EPUB: Usually the most flexible choice for reflowable reading in modern ereaders and apps.
- PDF: Often useful for textbooks, illustrations, and scans, but fixed pages can be awkward on a small screen.
- HTML: Convenient for browser reading and can work well with accessibility tools, though it may not provide an ebook file for offline use.
- TXT: Lightweight and widely compatible, with little or no styling.
- Kindle-compatible file: Compatibility and transfer depend on the Kindle model and current delivery options. Project Gutenberg’s device guidance covers available approaches, including options for older Kindles.
You do not need to buy an ereader to use these services: a phone, tablet, or computer with a compatible reading app is enough for many files. For most ordinary ebooks, choose a reflowable format; use PDF when preserving a page’s layout matters.

A book’s availability does not establish that it is free of copyright. Public-domain status is territorial: a work may be public domain in the United States and protected elsewhere. Rights-holder-authorized releases and open licenses have their own terms, while library services provide loans rather than unrestricted ownership.
Quick Recap
- Use the official service domain and inspect the book’s rights statement, publisher, or license.
- Confirm whether the page offers a permanent file, a temporary loan, online reading, or only a preview.
- Be wary of look-alike download buttons, suspicious mirrors, or pages that disguise advertisements as file links.
- An ebook should not require installing an executable or unusual browser extension. Leave if a supposedly free book prompts for unexpected software or payment-card details.
- For scans, check the edition, translator, completeness, and legibility; OCR text can contain mistakes or missing material.
- For promotional titles, verify the price immediately before downloading because offers can change.
