How to Block or Skip Hulu Ads: 4 Methods That Work in 2026

Hulu No Ads is the most reliable choice for eligible library titles, while Live TV DVR recordings can be fast-forwarded. Browser blockers are variable and conflict with Hulu’s terms.

The most reliable way to avoid commercials on Hulu is to choose its ad-free plan, but that does not make every Hulu-associated program commercial-free. Hulu’s No Ads tier applies mainly to its on-demand library; live channels, some Live TV content, special events, and titles with rights-related exceptions may still include ads. Hulu + Live TV subscribers can record eligible programs and fast-forward through the recordings. A desktop browser blocker may also help, but results vary and Hulu’s Subscriber Agreement prohibits blocking or impairing advertising.

There is no dependable, officially supported way to skip every Hulu ad on every device. Here are the practical options, their limits, and what to try when playback does not behave as expected.

Which Hulu ad-skipping method fits your situation?

Method Where it works Reliability Cost Main limitation
Choose Hulu No Ads or Premium Supported Hulu apps and browsers, for eligible Hulu library titles High for eligible library content Monthly plan price; varies by plan and account Does not remove every live, linear, special-event, or rights-exempt ad
Record with Hulu + Live TV and fast-forward Eligible Live TV programs after recording High when recording playback allows fast-forward Requires Hulu + Live TV Does not apply to ordinary on-demand shows or live viewing
Try a desktop browser content blocker Desktop browser only Variable uBlock Origin is free and open source Playback can break; blocking ads conflicts with Hulu’s agreement
Seek with player controls Only when the title and player permit seeking Low to moderate Free Not a universal skip button; seeking may be locked during an ad break

What Hulu’s “No Ads” plan actually covers

Hulu describes its ad-free experience as applying to the Hulu streaming library, subject to exceptions. Some titles may have a short ad break before and after an episode, and content with advertising obligations can remain ad-supported. Hulu + Live TV is a separate distinction: live channels and some on-demand programming supplied through the Live TV service can still contain commercials even when the Hulu library is on an ad-free tier. Hulu also distinguishes live or linear content and special events in its plan and content descriptions and Subscriber Agreement.

“No Ads” therefore does not promise that every item connected to a Hulu account is commercial-free. It also does not necessarily remove promotional announcements, sponsorships built into a program, or recommendations that appear in the service interface. Bundled Disney+ or ESPN access has its own content and ad arrangements; a Hulu plan label should not be read as a blanket ad-free promise for those services.

1. Upgrade to Hulu’s ad-free plan

Who should choose it

This is the simplest option for people who mostly watch eligible Hulu on-demand shows and movies across a TV, phone, streaming box, or browser and want to avoid troubleshooting playback workarounds.

Change your plan

  1. Sign in to Hulu and open your account or subscription-management page.
  2. Choose Manage Plan, Change Plan, or the equivalent control shown for your account.
  3. Select the plan labeled No Ads, Premium, or the current ad-free Hulu tier.
  4. Review the displayed price, billing timing, and included services, then confirm the change.
  5. If the plan label does not update in the app, sign out and back in or close and relaunch Hulu.

The account interface, available offers, and when a change takes effect can vary; check the confirmation shown for your subscription rather than assuming a universal menu path or billing date. Hulu’s cost information and plan features can change. At the time reflected on Hulu’s Live TV page, the listed bundle prices were $89.99 per month for Hulu (With Ads) + Live TV and $99.99 per month for Hulu Premium + Live TV. Those are Live TV bundle prices, not standalone on-demand plan prices, and Hulu says pricing and features are subject to change.

2. Record Live TV, then fast-forward

How it works

If you subscribe to Hulu + Live TV, recording an eligible program and watching the recording later is Hulu’s built-in route for moving past commercials. Hulu says its Live TV service includes Unlimited DVR, stores recordings for up to nine months, and allows fast-forwarding through recorded content. The DVR does not apply to on-demand shows; see the current Hulu + Live TV details.

  1. Open the program or live channel and use the recording control or add the program to My Stuff, as available for that item.
  2. Wait for the program to record, then open the completed recording from the DVR or My Stuff area.
  3. Use the player’s fast-forward control or timeline to move past commercial breaks.
  4. If fast-forward is unavailable, check that you opened the DVR recording rather than a live stream or an on-demand version of the program.

A recording is not inherently ad-free: you may need to fast-forward through multiple breaks, and recording or replay restrictions can apply to particular content. Live sports and special events can also have blackouts or different replay rules. Fast-forward controls may vary by device and title.

3. Try a content blocker in a desktop browser

What to expect

A browser extension may block some or all commercial interruptions, depending on Hulu’s current player and ad-delivery setup. It is an experiment, not a dependable Hulu feature. The official uBlock Origin project is a free, open-source content blocker. Its maintainers say it works best on Firefox, and describe how it uses filter lists to block network requests and page elements in its Firefox guidance and blocking-mode documentation.

Set it up cautiously

  1. Install uBlock Origin from the project’s official distribution links or the browser’s official add-on store. Avoid similarly named products and unofficial extensions.
  2. Leave its default settings in place initially, then open Hulu in a new tab and test a title.
  3. If Hulu reports an ad-blocker warning or playback fails, follow the on-screen instructions. To restore playback, disable the blocker for Hulu and reload the page.
  4. Keep the extension and its filter lists updated. Avoid copied custom filter codes or aggressive rules: Hulu can change its player, and unsupported rules may break playback, login, captions, or navigation.

This method applies to desktop browser viewing, not the Hulu apps on Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, smart TVs, phones, or game consoles. Browser extension support also changes: uBlock Origin’s project README notes a changing Chromium distribution status, including Chrome Web Store removal shown for August 31, 2026. Check the project’s current browser guidance before choosing a browser.

There is a contractual caveat: Hulu’s Subscriber Agreement prohibits removing, modifying, disabling, blocking, obscuring, or otherwise impairing advertising connected with the service, and allows Hulu to limit or terminate access for violations. Do not treat a blocker as an endorsed or risk-free solution.

4. Use seek controls only when Hulu allows them

Seeking during a program, skipping an intro, fast-forwarding a DVR recording, and trying to jump through an active commercial break are different things. Hulu may let you move along the timeline in some playback situations, but on-demand Hulu with ads does not provide a dependable built-in “skip all commercials” control. If the player locks seeking during an enforced break, a remote shortcut or timeline drag is not a reliable way around it.

Use fast-forward on a completed Live TV recording when available. For other playback, move forward only when the player permits it; do not rely on device-specific button combinations or “back and resume” tricks as universal solutions.

What usually does not remove Hulu ads reliably

  • Pi-hole and DNS blockers: DNS filtering blocks requests to known domains; it does not have the same page- and request-level controls as a browser content blocker. It is not a dependable Hulu in-stream ad solution and may interfere with playback. The distinction is explained in uBlock Origin’s comparison of browser and DNS-level blocking.
  • VPNs: A VPN changes network routing; it is not an ad-skipping tool. Hulu’s agreement separately restricts technology used to obscure or disguise location, so using one for this purpose can create account-policy issues.
  • Offline downloads: Hulu offers downloads for selected supported titles, but that does not establish that downloading an ad-supported title removes its ads. Treat downloads as an offline-viewing feature, not a verified ad-skip method.
  • Modified apps or unofficial clients: Do not install modified Hulu apps or give credentials to unofficial services. They can expose your account, device, and data to security risks, and Hulu’s agreement prohibits bypassing or tampering with service protections.
  • Random “Hulu ad skipper” extensions and copied filters: Their safety, current functionality, and compatibility are not established. Avoid installing software or rules from unverified sources.

If you still see ads or playback stops

  1. Check the plan shown on your Hulu account and confirm the change completed.
  2. Identify what you are watching: a live channel, a Live TV on-demand item, a DVR recording, or a Hulu library title. The ad rules differ.
  3. Force-close and relaunch Hulu, then sign out and back in if the plan status appears stale.
  4. Update the Hulu app or desktop browser.
  5. If using a blocker, disable it for Hulu and reload. If browser playback remains broken, clear Hulu site data or cache and try again.
  6. Test the same title on another supported device. This can help distinguish an account or title exception from a local app or browser problem.
  7. If an eligible Hulu library title continues to show ordinary commercial breaks after an ad-free plan change, contact Hulu support with the title and device details.
