For documentary work in 2026, Loudly is the strongest all-round choice: it offers royalty-free, commercially licensed generation, 50+ genres and subgenres, controls for genre, BPM, key and structure, plus WAV, MP3, stems and samples. Pair it with a library such as Bensound when you need a track with a clearly stated perpetual license.
What Documentary Music Needs
Documentary scores have to sit under speech, carry an emotional turn, and survive repeated edits. Build prompts around the scene rather than a vague mood: “restrained ambient underscore, slow pulse, no lead vocal, space for narration, gradual lift for the final reveal.” For a chapter transition, ask for a short rhythmic cue; for archival material, choose a restrained texture that does not compete with dialogue. Keep alternate edits, stems or loopable versions where the service provides them, and verify the exact license before publishing.

Rights Checks Before You Publish
- Match the plan to the release: a free tier may allow personal use only, while commercial, client, broadcast or streaming use can require a paid tier or a specific license.
- Save the invoice, license confirmation or certificate with the project file, especially when a service changes plans.
- If a workflow uses voice cloning, vocals, covers or uploaded samples, obtain the necessary consent and follow the platform’s terms for those materials.
- AI authorship still matters: the U.S. Copyright Office says material generated entirely by AI is not copyrightable, prompts alone do not make someone the author, and only human-authored parts of a mixed work can be protected. Registration applicants must disclose more than a minimal amount of AI-generated material and describe their contribution. Read the Copyright Office report.
A Practical Documentary Workflow
- Spot the cut: mark narration, archival dialogue, reveal points and exits where music must change.
- Choose the source: use Loudly or DaVinci for prompt-led variations, Bensound, HookSounds or Melody Loops for ready-made licensed cues, and Filmstro when distribution sets the license.
- Write a constrained brief: specify mood, energy, BPM or key where available, instrumentation, duration and “leave space for narration.”
- Prepare the edit: download the highest-quality permitted file, stems or loopable version, then create separate dialogue, music and effects tracks.
- Clear the release: verify commercial, client, broadcast and platform rights for the selected plan, and retain the license evidence.
For a fast decision, start with Loudly for controllable generation, Bensound for a perpetual catalog license, or Filmstro when the documentary’s distribution path is already known.
