Short answer: the “working add-ons” in the original 2020 list should not be treated as current recommendations. Several are unverified or obsolete, while maintained services such as Pluto TV, Plex Live, Samsung TV Plus, NewsON and broadcaster-specific players may still be useful—subject to country, account, rights and Kodi compatibility. Kodi is only the media-center software; it does not supply television channels or make an unauthorized stream legal.
The current shortlist
The table below separates the underlying service from the Kodi interface. Channel lineups, repository availability and geographic rights can change, so confirm details on the provider’s own website before relying on an add-on.

Current comparison guides list Pluto TV, Plex Live and Samsung TV Plus with large catalogs, but figures such as “more than 200,” “more than 1,000” or “about 1,500” channels are publisher-reported snapshots, not permanent specifications. What Kodi actually does
Kodi is a free media-center application, not a television subscription. An add-on can provide a Kodi interface to a service, but Kodi itself does not license every stream exposed through third-party software.

- Official Kodi-repository add-ons: distributed through Kodi’s repository and generally easier to maintain and audit.
- First-party service add-ons: Kodi interfaces for a broadcaster or identifiable service such as BBC iPlayer, Pluto TV or Plex.
- Third-party add-ons: maintained outside Kodi’s ecosystem; ownership, security, legality and reliability vary.
- PVR clients: playback tools that use a playlist or tuner you already have. They are not channel sources.
Modern coverage generally refers to Kodi 21 “Omega,” whereas the 2020 article discussed Kodi 18 “Leia.” An add-on that worked on Leia is not automatically compatible with Omega, a particular operating system or your device.
What happened to the original 2020 list?
The Fossbytes article was published on January 8, 2020 and displays a July 30, 2023 update date. It reported that links worked when checked at that time, while also warning that third-party streams could disappear. That point-in-time statement is not evidence of current operation. The original list is documented at Fossbytes.

Do not install an archived repository merely because an old page still links to it. Unknown ZIP files can expose you to abandoned code, trackers or redistributed streams.

Current options by viewing need
Free general-interest channels
Pluto TV, Plex Live and Samsung TV Plus are the most sensible starting points for free, ad-supported channels where their services operate. “Free” means advertising and a limited catalog—not unrestricted access to premium sports, movie or cable networks. News
NewsON aggregates local-news streams from more than 100 U.S. locations according to current coverage, but the participating-station lineup can change. Pluto TV may provide additional news channels. Outside the United States, use the relevant public or commercial broadcaster’s own service. The official NewsON site is newson.us.
International broadcasters
BBC iPlayer is intended for eligible U.K. users and carries U.K. licensing obligations. RaiPlay is commonly described as restricted to Italian IP addresses. france.tv, NHK Live and similar broadcaster interfaces depend on territorial rights, local accounts and program availability. Your own IPTV subscription or antenna backend
PVR IPTV Simple Client can load a legitimate provider’s M3U playlist and, when supplied, XMLTV electronic-program-guide data. It does not validate the playlist or supply channels. You remain responsible for using a properly licensed source.
How to install a maintained add-on safely
Use these steps only when the add-on is currently listed in Kodi’s official repository or the service owner documents a trustworthy distribution method. Labels vary by Kodi version, operating system, skin and translation.
- Open Kodi.
- Select Add-ons.
- Choose Download or Add-on browser.
- Open the relevant category, usually Video add-ons.
- Select the add-on and choose Install.
- Open it from the Add-ons section.
- Sign in or set the required country and service options.
Keep Kodi and its dependencies current, and do not enable unknown sources casually. Do not download random dependency ZIP files to force an abandoned add-on to install.

How to configure PVR IPTV Simple Client
- Install PVR IPTV Simple Client from Kodi’s official repository.
- Open its Configure screen.
- Choose an M3U playlist URL or local file supplied by your legitimate provider.
- Add the provider’s XMLTV guide URL or file if one is available.
- Save the settings and allow Kodi’s PVR manager to reload, or restart Kodi.
- Open TV from Kodi’s main menu.
Never copy an unknown playlist just because it contains a large number of premium channels. Technical playback is not proof of authorization.

“Failed to install dependency”
- Confirm that the add-on is maintained and supports your Kodi major version.
- Update Kodi only from an official source, then update the official repository and dependencies.
- Remove and reinstall the add-on only when its repository is trustworthy.
- If it is abandoned, replace it instead of repeatedly forcing installation.
The 2020 article suggested extra dependencies and, as a fallback, wiping Kodi. A full reset is not a sensible default because it can cause data loss and does not make an untrusted repository safe.
The add-on installs but shows no channels
Check country settings, account authorization, device date and time, service outages, broadcaster changes and whether the service has discontinued its Kodi interface.

Playback buffers or stops
Possible causes include an overloaded host, ISP congestion, a broken manifest, expired token, geo-block, service outage, unsupported codec or outdated dependency. A VPN does not automatically repair any of these problems, improve speed or authorize an unlicensed stream.
The repository URL is dead
Do not substitute archive mirrors or replacement repositories unless the maintainer and licensing status are clear. Remove the dead repository and choose an identifiable official service instead.
Are Kodi live-TV add-ons legal?
Legality depends on the source and your jurisdiction. Watching an authorized free stream, using a legitimate paid subscription, or loading a provider-supplied playlist is different from accessing scraped or redistributed premium channels. Copyright, contract, broadcaster and licensing rules still apply when a stream opens successfully.
Current guides warn that some unofficial add-ons may expose users to pirated material, malware or tracking, but that does not establish that every unofficial add-on is malicious. Evaluate licensing clarity, maintenance, repository provenance, privacy practices, geographic rights, reliability and EPG support—not channel count alone.
When the official app is better than Kodi
Use the broadcaster’s native app or website when it requires DRM, frequent authentication, device attestation, a local license or rapidly changing APIs. Native apps usually receive service updates first and may offer features a community Kodi interface cannot reproduce. Kodi is most useful when you want one interface for maintained services or your own lawful media and IPTV sources.
A practical selection checklist
- Is the service owner identifiable, and is the stream linked to its official service?
- Is the add-on currently maintained for your Kodi version and device?
- What country, account, subscription or television license is required?
- Does the service provide useful guide data and reliable playback?
- Would the native app be more stable?
- Are advertisements, privacy practices and permissions acceptable?
The safest approach is to install the smallest set of maintained, region-appropriate services you actually use, rather than collecting repositories from an old “working” list.
