For a family movie night where the performances matter as much as the story, these ten picks range from gentle animation to emotionally demanding live-action drama. The ranking is an editorial judgment—not a published score—based on acting craft, appeal across generations, and viewing intensity. “Family” does not mean suitable for every age: use the age guidance and content notes below to find a fit for your household.

How this ranking works

The list weighs three things: the performers’ emotional range, timing, and chemistry; whether the story gives both children and adults something to engage with; and how much peril, fear, or difficult subject matter could affect younger or more sensitive viewers. Voice acting counts as acting here, though it is distinct from the visual work of animating a character. The order reflects those combined considerations rather than a formal scoring system.

The 10 best family movies with great acting

1. Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016)

At the top is this mismatched-buddy comedy about a boy and his gruff foster father. Its humor depends on the contrast between the characters, while the relationship gives the story room for tenderness. TIME correspondent Eliana Dockterman praised “tender performances from its whole cast,” including director Taika Waititi in a small role. The same review notes tragedy and danger alongside the comedy, so this is better for families ready for some emotional weight than for a uniformly light evening.

2. Paddington (2014)

Paddington’s live-action cast gives a warm, slightly absurd story a human center, while Nicole Kidman plays against that sweetness as a villain. TIME describes the film as whimsical and sweet and praises Kidman’s performance. The combination of broad comedy and affectionate character work makes it a strong choice when adults want more than a children’s adventure.

3. Paddington 2 (2017)

The sequel keeps the series’ gentle comic world and adds Hugh Grant as a villain whose theatricality gives the supporting role its own comic rhythm. TIME praises Grant and Kidman as villains across the Paddington films. Its appeal rests on ensemble timing as much as on the central bear, making it an easy pick for a family that enjoys playful, good-natured comedy.

4. Mary Poppins (1964)

Julie Andrews anchors this musical fantasy with poise and comic precision, and the mix of song, humor, and family story gives the performance room to shift tone. Common Sense Media lists the film as G-rated and recommends it for age 5+, describing positive messages. Its classic musical style may feel slower than newer animation, but its central performance remains the reason to revisit it together.

5. My Neighbor Totoro (1988)

This gentle Studio Ghibli fantasy follows two sisters and their encounters with a mystical creature. Its child-centered performances suit the story’s quiet wonder rather than pushing it toward high drama. Common Sense Media describes it as a beautifully animated fantasy about friendship and recommends it for age 5+; TIME also recommends it as a family film. The expressive voice work and the animation work together, but they are different parts of what makes the characters feel alive.

6. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

Steven Spielberg’s story of a boy and an alien depends on intimate reactions as much as spectacle. The young cast’s sense of trust and fear gives the friendship its emotional credibility, while the adults’ performances keep the household stakes present. Common Sense Media calls it a family classic and recommends it for age 7+. Its suspense and separation themes can be intense for some children.

7. Soul (2020)

Jamie Foxx and Tina Fey lead Pixar’s animated story about a music teacher and a soul who has not yet found a reason to live on Earth. The premise gives the voice performers two distinct personalities to establish: one rooted in ambition and routine, the other in curiosity about ordinary life. TIME identifies Foxx and Fey as the film’s stars; its reviewed description does not make a direct critical assessment of their performances, so this selection reflects the voice cast’s central role in carrying a character-driven story.

8. Fly Away Home (1996)

This animal adventure follows a girl and her father as they try to guide a flock of geese. The relationship between them provides the emotional backbone to the outdoors adventure, balancing grief and adjustment with a sense of purpose. Common Sense Media describes it as a thrilling, touching animal adventure and recommends it for age 8+. Its flight sequences and jeopardy may be exciting, but families should consider how their children respond to animal peril.

9. Finding Nemo (2003)

Albert Brooks and Ellen DeGeneres give the animated fish distinct comic voices, while the story’s father-son relationship moves between overprotectiveness, frustration, and trust. That emotional progression is what makes the voice performances more than a collection of jokes. Common Sense Media recommends the film for age 5+ and rates it G, but also warns of very scary moments in the father-son story—a useful reminder that a rating and an age recommendation do not tell the whole story for every child.

10. Bridge to Terabithia (2007)

This friendship drama earns its place for the young leads’ earnest, grounded performances and the way imagination becomes a refuge for two children. Common Sense Media recommends it for age 9+ and notes its friendship theme. It is a more emotionally demanding choice than the list’s gentler comedies and fantasies; families should consult the full age and content guidance before watching with younger children.

Choose by age and mood, not just by ranking

The recommendations vary substantially: Common Sense Media’s reviewed guidance places My Neighbor Totoro, Finding Nemo, and Mary Poppins at 5+; E.T. at 7+; Fly Away Home at 8+; and Bridge to Terabithia at 9+. These are guide recommendations, not guarantees that a particular child will find a film comfortable. Finding Nemo is specifically noted for scary moments, and Hunt for the Wilderpeople mixes comedy with tragedy and danger. For a sensitive viewer, those details may matter more than a film’s position on this list.
