There is no single best EPUB app for everyone. The right choice depends on whether your file is DRM-free, whether you switch between Android and iPhone, whether you need cloud synchronization, and whether you are reading a reflowable novel or a fixed-layout comic, cookbook, or textbook.
For most people with DRM-free files, PocketBook Reader is the broadest choice. FBReader is especially strong for EPUB/fb2 collections and Readium LCP. Google Play Books is the easiest route to uploaded books on multiple devices, while Apple Books, Kindle, Kobo, and Libby are best understood as ecosystem or library apps rather than neutral local libraries.

Before choosing an EPUB reader
- Is the file DRM-free? Adobe DRM, Readium LCP, library protection, and retailer encryption are different systems.
- What must synchronize? An app may sync purchases but not imported files, or position but not highlights and notes.
- Where will you read? “Available on Android and iOS” does not prove shared libraries or feature parity.
- What kind of EPUB is it? Reflowable novels are much easier to render than fixed-layout comics, cookbooks, textbooks, and picture books.
What EPUB support actually means
EPUB is a reflowable format designed to adapt text to different screens. EPUB books can also contain fixed page layouts, embedded fonts, audio, video, SVG, scripts, and complex navigation. Support varies considerably between apps. Google’s publishing documentation distinguishes reflowable and fixed-layout EPUBs and notes that JavaScript, MathML, and some interactive or multi-column features are unsupported in Google Play Books: Google EPUB guidance.
For an ordinary text novel, most of the apps below should open the file. For a richly designed EPUB, check fixed-layout behavior, zoom, fonts, media, right-to-left text, and table-of-contents navigation separately.

1. PocketBook Reader — best overall for most DRM-free EPUBs
PocketBook is the strongest all-round recommendation when you want one app for EPUB, PDF, comics, audiobooks, cloud files, and adjustable reading controls. Its Android listing claims 26 formats, DRM/LCP-related support, text-to-speech, themes, fonts, margins, spacing, and cloud synchronization: Google Play listing. Its iOS listing claims 19 formats and explicitly mentions Adobe DRM-protected EPUB and PDF files: App Store listing.
Those are platform-specific store claims, not one universal format count. Cloud providers, store functions, and DRM workflows can also vary by region and operating system.
Choose it if
- You have a mixed DRM-free collection and may also encounter Adobe DRM.
- You want font, color, margin, spacing, night-mode, and text-to-speech controls.
- You want Android and iOS apps without committing entirely to Amazon, Apple, or Kobo.
Skip it if
You want the smallest possible interface or do not want any cloud/account features.
2. FBReader — best for EPUB/fb2 and Readium LCP
FBReader is a practical choice for EPUB and fb2 collections, Book Network synchronization, and readers who specifically need Readium LCP. Its documentation says LCP support began with Android version 3.7: supported formats. The Android page lists version 3.8.31, published June 29, 2026, while the iOS page lists version 1.2.6, published February 26, 2026: Android and iOS.
FBReader says its Book Network can synchronize collections, reading positions, and bookmarks: official overview. Do not assume feature parity: the iOS page says OPDS catalog integration is not supported there.
3. Google Play Books — best for uploaded EPUBs across devices
Google Play Books is the simplest option when you want to upload an EPUB once and read it on signed-in Android, iPhone, iPad, or web devices. Google’s help page documents uploaded EPUB reading plus bookmarks, highlights, and notes: official help.
Import paths
- Android: locate the file in Files or Downloads, tap it, and choose Play Books or “Upload to Play Books.” Uploaded titles appear under Library → Uploads. See Android instructions.
- iPhone/iPad: save the EPUB in Files, tap Share or Open With, and select Google Play Books. See iOS instructions.
- Computer: open Google Play Books, go to Your books, choose Upload files, and select the EPUB. See desktop instructions.
Google’s consumer help page retrieved for this article does not state a current maximum EPUB size. Historical community reports mention limits, but verify the limit for your account and upload route before relying on very large files.
4. Apple Books — best for Apple-device readers
Apple Books is the natural choice if your reading happens on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Import a DRM-free EPUB from Files, Mail, Safari, or AirDrop and open it in Books; Apple then handles the reading experience inside its ecosystem. It is convenient for Apple purchases and local imports, but it is not a native Android solution, so it should not be presented as the best cross-platform library.
Apple’s Books support and publishing context is documented at Apple Support.
5. Kobo Books — best for Kobo purchases
Kobo Books makes the most sense when your purchases, reading progress, and possible future ereader purchase are already centered on Kobo. Kobo’s format guidance covers EPUB2, EPUB3, PDF, MOBI, and Adobe DRM: Kobo format support.

Kobo is less compelling as a neutral manager for a large folder of independent EPUBs. Adobe DRM-protected books may require the official authorization and transfer workflow; social-DRM files are a different case.
6. Kindle — best for Amazon customers
Kindle is the right answer when your books come from Amazon or you use Kindle hardware. Amazon accepts EPUB through Send to Kindle, but the file is generally converted into Amazon’s Kindle reading format. That makes Kindle excellent for Amazon synchronization and less attractive when your main goal is preserving direct control over EPUB files, metadata, and rendering.

7. ReadEra — best simple Android reader
ReadEra is aimed at straightforward local-library reading on Android. It is a sensible choice for DRM-free books when you want folders, offline access, and little ecosystem overhead. The evidence here does not establish a current iOS companion or cross-platform sync, so verify availability before selecting it for a mixed-device household.
8. Moon+ Reader — best Android customization
Moon+ Reader is the power-user option among Android-focused readers. It is the app to investigate when you care about themes, gestures, scrolling and pagination choices, typography, margins, and detailed display behavior. Current features, advertisements, and Pro pricing are volatile; verify the live Google Play listing before purchase. It is not a dependable Android-and-iOS recommendation.
9. Lithium — best minimalist Android interface
Lithium keeps its focus on EPUB reading and advertises Google Drive synchronization for reading position, highlights, notes, and bookmarks, with Lithium Pro unlocking additional features: Google Play listing.
User reviews on that listing report file-permission problems and books failing to open. Reviews do not prove a universal defect, but they are a reason to test current Android storage and import behavior before moving a large library.
10. Marvin — best advanced iOS EPUB reader
Marvin is designed for dedicated iPhone and iPad EPUB readers who want more control than a basic store app. It is a poor fit for Android users or anyone requiring a shared Android/iOS library. Verify the current App Store version, feature set, and price; an older comparison matrix is not reliable evidence of current terms: comparison reference.
DRM compatibility: match the protection, not just the extension
| Book type | Appropriate route | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| DRM-free EPUB | Apple Books, Google Play Books, PocketBook, FBReader, ReadEra, Moon+ Reader, Lithium, Marvin, and usually Kobo’s import route | Complex EPUB3 or fixed layouts may still render poorly |
| Adobe DRM EPUB | PocketBook explicitly advertises Adobe DRM; other apps require explicit confirmation | Authorization and regional availability apply |
| Readium LCP EPUB | FBReader documents LCP support; PocketBook’s Android listing also mentions LCP-related support | LCP is not interchangeable with Adobe DRM |
| Library loan | Use Libby or the library’s authorized app and lending workflow | Borrowing periods and DRM remain controlled by the library platform |
| Kindle, Apple, or Kobo purchase | Use that vendor’s official app | Vendor encryption and account rules apply |
No app opens every EPUB. Import can fail because of encryption, invalid packaging, unsupported JavaScript, fixed layout, complex CSS, embedded media, or missing semantic markup. DRM circumvention is not a solution; use the retailer’s or library’s authorized app and account.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Sync, importing, and offline reading
Cross-platform claims should be read narrowly. Confirm whether the service syncs the file itself, reading position, bookmarks, highlights, notes, covers, and collections—and whether Android-to-iOS sync is supported. Imported books in Google Play Books are cloud-backed; PocketBook and FBReader advertise synchronization, but exact providers and features vary by platform.

For local files, Android normally uses Files/Downloads → tap EPUB → Open with. On iPhone or iPad, use Files → Share → the reader app; choose More if the app is hidden. Some readers copy the book into an internal library, so deleting the original may not remove the duplicate.
DRM-free local files generally remain available offline after import. Purchased and borrowed books may require an initial download, account authorization, or periodic access checks. “Offline” does not mean every cloud catalog or loan works indefinitely without a connection.
Accessibility and reading controls
Look for VoiceOver on iOS/iPadOS, TalkBack on Android, text-to-speech, adjustable type, contrast, spacing, and semantic chapter navigation. PocketBook explicitly advertises text-to-speech and extensive typography controls. TTS is not equivalent to full accessibility: text inside images, fixed layouts, poor headings, and incomplete document structure can still make a book difficult to navigate. Fixed-layout EPUBs are especially challenging because text may not reflow or resize normally.
When an EPUB opens incorrectly
The file does not appear in the share sheet
Save it to Files or Downloads first, use Open with or Share → More, and enable the reader. On Android, grant the app the requested storage permission and retry.
Recommended Free Tools
The book opens but the contents or fonts are wrong
Try another reader, switch between scrolling and pagination, and check whether the EPUB is fixed-layout or uses embedded fonts and complex CSS. A normal novel is not a reliable test for a comic or textbook.
Sync is missing
Confirm that the same account is signed in on both devices, that the book was imported into the service’s cloud library rather than merely opened locally, and that the app actually syncs notes and position—not only purchased titles.
The book is locked
Identify the DRM system from the retailer or library. Adobe DRM and Readium LCP require different authorization paths; a DRM-free reader cannot be expected to open either one.
There are duplicate copies
Check whether the app made an internal copy during import. Remove duplicates from the app library only after confirming that the original file is safely stored elsewhere.

Scenario-based picks
- Downloaded a DRM-free EPUB: PocketBook for breadth, or Google Play Books if cloud access matters.
- Switch between Android and iPhone: Google Play Books, FBReader, or PocketBook, after confirming the exact sync features you need.
- Want maximum Android customization: Moon+ Reader.
- Want a simple offline Android library: ReadEra; Lithium is a minimalist alternative, but test current storage behavior.
- Buy mostly from Amazon: Kindle.
- Buy mostly from Kobo: Kobo Books.
- Use Apple devices exclusively: Apple Books for simplicity or Marvin for deeper EPUB controls.
- Borrow from a library: Libby, subject to your library’s catalog and lending rules.
- Need Adobe DRM: PocketBook or another app that explicitly supports Adobe DRM.
- Need Readium LCP: FBReader or another reader with explicit LCP documentation.
Cost, privacy, and ecosystem trade-offs
Most apps are free to download, but that can mean ads, a Pro unlock, a subscription, store purchases, or optional cloud features. Prices and availability vary by country, tax, platform, and date; verify the live Google Play or App Store listing rather than relying on an old price table.
Cloud convenience also has a cost in control: an uploaded personal book, its metadata, and reading activity may be stored by the vendor. Choose a local-first reader when you do not want a cloud library, and choose a vendor ecosystem when synchronized purchases matter more than file independence.
Final decision
Choose PocketBook Reader for the broadest general-purpose solution, FBReader for EPUB/fb2 and LCP-focused synchronization, and Google Play Books for the easiest uploaded-library workflow. Apple Books, Kindle, Kobo, and Libby are strongest when your books already belong to those ecosystems. ReadEra, Moon+ Reader, Lithium, and Marvin are targeted choices whose platform limits and current store terms should be checked before committing a large library.
