This is an editorial ranking of ten anime characters with a demonstrated connection to video games—not a permanent fan consensus. The order weighs how central gaming is to each character, evidence of skill or competitiveness, gaming’s role in the story, and memorability. It includes casual players as well as characters whose stories unfold inside virtual worlds; general otaku interests alone do not count as proof of gaming ability.
Ranker’s user-voted list is dynamic: its page showed 807 voters when accessed October 7, 2026, and said it was updated August 1, 2025. That snapshot is one point of comparison, not a definitive result. An Anime2You report of Ranker standings from May 20, 2023, had a different order, with Anzu Hoshino first, Shiro second, and Karen Tendo third. The ranking below applies its own stated criteria.
10. Umaru Doma — Himouto! Umaru-chan
Umaru’s gaming connection is broad and everyday: Honey’s Anime describes her playing video games, arcade games, and portable-console games. That variety makes her a recognizable casual gamer, even if the available descriptions do not establish her as a standout competitor. She ranks lower because gaming is one part of her leisure life rather than the defining skill highlighted for several others on this list.
9. Kashiwazaki Sena — Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai
Sena is described by Honey’s Anime as a frequent player across different kinds of games. That consistency earns her a place among anime’s familiar gamer characters, but the cited description emphasizes frequency more than a particular achievement, gaming-centered plot, or exceptional ability.

8. Karen Tendo — Gamers!
Karen appears in both Ranker’s accessed ranking and Anime2You’s account of the May 2023 standings. Ranker’s description distinguishes her sociability from the more introverted gamer archetype, a useful reminder that anime gaming characters are not all written as shut-ins. Her inclusion in a series named Gamers! gives her strong thematic relevance, though the available descriptions do not detail a specific gaming feat.
7. Konata Izumi — Lucky Star
Konata is portrayed in the reviewed character descriptions as devoted to video games. That sustained enthusiasm, rather than a single tournament victory or virtual-world role, anchors her gamer identity. She is a memorable example of gaming as a regular part of a character’s interests, but the cited material offers less evidence of competitive skill than it does for the higher-ranked entries.

6. Marin Kitagawa — My Dress-Up Darling
Marin is an otaku and gamer, and ONE Esports notes that her favorite game inspires one of her cosplay interests. The connection is especially memorable because gaming feeds into another major part of her character: her enthusiasm for costumes and the stories behind them. She ranks in the middle because gaming is meaningful to her, but it is not presented as her principal competitive identity.
5. Kuroyukihime — Accel World
Honey’s Anime presents Kuroyukihime as a formidable player in a virtual world. That gives her a stronger demonstrated link between gaming and action than characters whose descriptions focus mainly on casual play. Her position reflects the role of virtual competition in the character’s appeal, while the available material provides less detail about the specific skills behind that reputation.

4. Subaru — .hack//Sign
Subaru is described by Honey’s Anime as a skilled player and leader within the game. That combination—ability and responsibility in a game-world setting—makes her one of the clearest examples here of gaming shaping a character’s role, not simply filling her downtime. She narrowly misses the top three because the descriptions establish her in-game competence but offer less detail about a distinctive gaming specialty.
3. Akatsuki — Log Horizon
Akatsuki is described as a skilled player in the MMORPG Elder Tale. Her place near the top rests on that explicit connection to both a specific game and demonstrated ability within it. For readers who count characters whose plots center on an online game world, she is a particularly direct fit for a gamer-character ranking.

2. Shiro — No Game No Life
Shiro is one half of Blank, the gaming duo she forms with Sora. Ranker and ONE Esports describe her as a formidable gamer; ONE Esports specifically points to puzzle-solving and memory. Those traits make her gaming identity central rather than incidental, and her partnership gives that skill a clear narrative context.
Yen Press describes the light novel’s premise this way: “In this fantasy world, everything’s a game–and these gamer siblings play to win!” Its catalog page for No Game No Life, Vol. 1 lists the paperback ISBN 9780316383110 and classifies it as video-game-related and an anime tie-in. Retail availability may vary.

1. Asuna Yuuki — Sword Art Online
Asuna ranks first because gaming is inseparable from the story that introduces her and remains part of her connection to virtual worlds. Ranker describes her as entering an experimental VRMMORPG and continuing to play similar games afterward. Honey’s Anime also placed her first in its 2016 editorial list. Her combination of a defining game-world experience, continuing involvement, and lasting prominence makes her the strongest all-around fit under this ranking’s criteria.
How fan rankings differ
This list is an editorial judgment, not a claim that fans have settled on one order. Ranker’s accessed page showed Asuna first, Shiro third, and Marin second; the order can change as users vote. Anime2You’s report on Ranker’s May 20, 2023 standings instead listed Anzu Hoshino first, Shiro second, and Karen Tendo third among its reported top entries. Honey’s Anime’s separate 2016 editorial ranking put Asuna first and Shiro second. These are different lists, dates, and methods—not interchangeable measurements of a universal consensus.
