For anime starting in Japan’s January 2026 Winter season, these are 10 standout picks, ranked by franchise appeal, premise, variety, and how compelling each is as a viewing choice. The order is an editorial selection—not a poll or an objective rating—and the season includes many more titles than these ten. A January-season listing also does not mean every series premiered on January 1 or is available worldwide.
What anime is coming out in January 2026?
This list uses “January 2026” to mean the Japanese Winter 2026 slate: anime scheduled to begin during the winter season, including shows with different start dates. ORICON’s Japan schedule lists title-by-title broadcast starts, while its overview describes the winter anime slate as titles starting in January. Check the ORICON schedule for specific Japanese TV dates and stations; listings can be updated.

The ranking weighs the appeal of returning series, the distinctiveness of each premise, genre variety, and potential accessibility for newcomers. The available seasonal announcements establish which titles are on the slate and provide some delivery information, but they do not compare animation, reception, or story quality. Treat the placements below as a considered watchlist, not a claim of critical consensus.
The 10 best Winter 2026 anime, ranked
1. Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 2
A high-profile return with strong appeal for viewers drawn to fantasy sequels. Crunchyroll includes Season 2 in its Winter 2026 lineup, and KADOKAWA lists the title in its Nico Nico winter delivery schedule. Its place at the top reflects the strength of the returning-series pick in this particular mix; the seasonal announcements do not establish a comparative quality ranking.

#1 Best Overall
Crunchyroll’s Winter 2026 lineup and KADOKAWA’s winter delivery announcement confirm it is part of the season.
2. JUJUTSU KAISEN Season 3: Culling Game Part 1
A major returning action series, with the Culling Game as the season’s central arc hook. Crunchyroll names Season 3, and KADOKAWA lists Culling Game Part 1 among its winter deliveries. It ranks highly for viewers who want an established franchise’s next chapter, though the announcements cited here do not settle how much prior-season context a new viewer will need.

3. [Oshi no Ko] Season 3
This returning drama brings a different tone to a slate rich in action and fantasy franchises. KADOKAWA lists Season 3 in its Winter 2026 lineup. Its position recognizes the value of a recognizable continuing series while keeping the list varied rather than stacking it entirely with action titles.
4. Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku
ORICON’s Japan Anime News winter overview includes Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku. It is a useful pick for viewers looking for another returning franchise in the season. The cited overview establishes its inclusion, but not a precise season or part label here; consult the official series listing for the exact title and Japanese broadcast timing.

5. Fire Force Season 3 Part 2
ORICON’s winter list includes Fire Force Season 3 Part 2, making it another returning action option. It adds a distinct franchise to a watchlist otherwise spanning fantasy, drama, and sports. The seasonal listing is evidence of its place in the slate, not a basis for comparing production quality or reception.
6. Golden Kamuy Final Season
Both Crunchyroll and ORICON include Golden Kamuy Final Season in their winter coverage. Its concluding-season framing gives it a clear hook for viewers already following the series. ORICON’s Japan schedule lists a January 5 broadcast start; check the live listing for the station and any schedule corrections.
Rank #4
7. Fate/strange Fake
Listed in both KADOKAWA’s lineup and ORICON’s winter overview, Fate/strange Fake is the franchise entry for viewers interested in the broader Fate universe. The announcements confirm its seasonal placement, but this list does not assume that a particular viewing order or level of prior familiarity is required.
8. Medalist Season 2
ORICON includes Medalist Season 2 in its Winter 2026 list, adding a sports-series sequel to the selection. It helps broaden the slate beyond action and fantasy, and is a natural candidate for viewers who prefer a competition-centered story to a franchise battle or supernatural premise.

9. Hana-Kimi
Hana-Kimi appears in Crunchyroll’s Winter 2026 coverage and ORICON’s Japan slate. As a new contrast to the returning-season picks, it gives the ranking a different kind of entry point. The cited lineup sources establish its presence, but do not provide enough detail here to make claims about its adaptation, plot specifics, or regional release plans.
10. Sentenced to Be a Hero
Crunchyroll identifies Sentenced to Be a Hero among the season’s new simulcasts. It rounds out the list with a new title rather than another named sequel, making it a useful option for viewers who want to try something outside the established franchises. Its ranking reflects that variety, not a source-reported score.

Japanese TV broadcast dates and streaming release dates are separate schedules. Crunchyroll announced a selection of Winter 2026 titles with territory information and weekly subtitle and dub scheduling; it cautions that “Broadcast schedules and dub languages are subject to change.” Its lineup should not be read as confirmation that every listed show is available in every country.
For Japan, U-NEXT’s December 22, 2025 announcement described a planned slate of 45 or more winter titles, including early, same-time, and fastest-web releases, and said the lineup could be updated. KADOKAWA’s announcement, current as of December 26, 2025, listed 52 new winter titles and 16 continuing titles for Nico Nico; these are service-specific counts, not totals for the entire season or evidence of rights elsewhere. Check each service’s current title page and your region’s schedule before planning a watch.
