Thriller or horror?
The film is presented as a thriller, and that label fits the premise: a manhunt-style escalation built around a murder spree rather than supernatural threat. Is Strange Darling based on a true story?

“When I approached this film, I tried at all times to stay away from any sort of message or intrusive point of view,” Mollner says.
On the puzzle-like construction, he explains:
“It’s so difficult to surprise these days, so finding a way to do that was paramount,” he says.
