The phrase “besieged corporeality” is a useful critical description of this work, not a theory Patel is known to have named himself: his poems attend to injury, illness, mortality and the unequal relations that leave some people exposed to harm. In later poems, that unsparing attention opens—tentatively—to questions beyond material existence.
What “besieged corporeality” means in Patel’s poetry
Corporeality means embodied, physical existence. In Patel’s poems, the body is not merely a symbol for an idea: it has skin, nerves and viscera; it can be injured, become ill and die. That attention gives the poems’ violence a material weight. Suffering is not safely abstracted from the people who undergo it.
Poet Arundhathi Subramaniam, whose introduction to Patel’s Collected Poems is excerpted by Scroll, connects this quality to the poem “On Killing a Tree.” She reads its matter-of-fact violence as a refusal to look away from pain. Her interpretation makes the poem’s unsentimental gaze central: the plainness of the account does not make destruction less troubling. Subramaniam captures the intimacy of Patel’s attention in the phrase, “The skin is soul-deep.”
How bodies are caught in social violence
The poems’ concern with physical vulnerability widens into a concern with who has power and who bears its costs. Patel’s writing addresses social hierarchy, caste and class inequalities, subaltern marginalization, and the harm of imposed passivity, as discussed by Subramaniam and summarized in Poetry International’s profile. Attention to servants and marginalized people belongs to this wider terrain: bodily vulnerability is shaped by social relations, not only by illness or mortality.

Patel’s poems thus place the body among systems that can make one person act and another be acted upon. This is a critical framing of recurring concerns in the work, not a claim that every poem reduces to a single political message. The force of the poems lies in keeping the human cost visible.
Medicine, art and the physical imagination
Patel (1940–2023) was a physician as well as a poet, playwright and visual artist. Accounts of his work connect these practices with the poems’ physical attention, visual sharpness and theatrical qualities, without making any one profession a sole explanation for his style. Subramaniam quotes Patel on his creative impulse: “What motivates most of my creative activity is the need for knowledge.”

His medical background offers context for the close attention to bodily life, but it should not be treated as a formula for reading the poems. The writing’s clinical or unsentimental quality coexists with an insistence that pain matters; observation does not neutralize suffering.
How the poems change—and what remains
Subramaniam describes a shift in the later poems toward greater openness to profane, everyday life and a tentative curiosity about what may lie beyond material existence. She does not present this as a conversion or a resolution. The physical body remains central even as the poems acknowledge an uncertain possibility beyond it. Of that possibility, she writes: “Remote it might be. Dim, certainly. Tenuous, undeniably, and flickering. But it is acknowledged.”

Where to begin reading Gieve Patel
Patel’s three principal poetry collections are Poems (1966), How Do You Withstand, Body (1976) and Mirrored, Mirroring (1991). For a broad entry point, Collected Poems, published by Poetrywala in 2017, gathers poems from those books and adds nineteen new poems and some translations from the seventeenth-century Gujarati mystic Akho. The University of Hyderabad’s essay on Indian writing in English details the publication history and contents.
The publication sequence also reflects a collaborative literary life: Nissim Ezekiel published Poems; How Do You Withstand, Body appeared through Clearing House, the poetry collective Patel helped establish with Adil Jussawalla, Arvind Krishna Mehrotra and Arun Kolatkar; Oxford University Press published Mirrored, Mirroring. Poetrywala’s collected edition brings the principal books together, making it a useful route into both the early emphasis on bodily violence and the later poems’ wider questions.
