The available account of the three scenes in Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay identifies two: Gabbar Singh’s delayed, threatening entrance and Jai’s comic, indirect approach to Basanti’s grandmother. Both show how the 1975 film makes shifts in tone part of its storytelling. The account does not identify the third scene, so naming one would be guesswork.
What the two identified scenes reveal
Sholay moves among action, comedy, romance, tragedy and revenge. Its scenes do not simply alternate between those modes: the changes in pace and feeling help give the story its shape. Ramesh Sippy’s direction, Salim-Javed’s writing and the ensemble performances make the film’s action carry emotional weight while its lighter exchanges develop relationships. The Film Heritage Foundation describes this blend of genres in its account of the film and its restoration.
Gabbar’s entrance: threat before revelation
After Jai and Veeru repel an attack by Gabbar Singh’s men, the villain’s entrance builds menace through what it withholds. The available scene description first gives us his booted feet crossing rocks and the sight of a whip; the moment then develops into a vicious interrogation. Before the viewer gets a full view of Gabbar, the staging has made his capacity for violence palpable.
That approach fits a film in which framing and rhythm can make violence felt without showing it graphically. In a separate scene, critic Uday Bhatia notes that the shots of Thakur’s family being killed freeze as each person is shot, a formal choice shaped by censorship restrictions. The two moments are not the same, but both show how the film can make menace register through its images and timing. Bhatia discusses the film’s visual choices in Film Comment’s essay on Sholay at 50.

Jai and Basanti’s grandmother: courtship by indirection
The second identified moment is a comic, tender exchange in which Jai approaches Basanti’s grandmother with a proposal—or something like one. That qualification matters: the scene’s appeal lies in the negotiation and indirection, not in a straightforward declaration. Salim-Javed’s pointed dialogue lets a social encounter do several things at once: create humor, suggest intimacy and move the relationships forward.
Set beside Gabbar’s cruelty, the exchange also makes the film’s tonal range concrete. The humor does not erase the danger in the story; it gives the characters and audience a different register in which to experience it.

Why the third scene cannot be named responsibly
The accessible excerpt from Scroll’s article says it discusses three scenes, but it identifies only Gabbar’s entrance and Jai’s exchange with Basanti’s grandmother. The third scene and the full analysis are not available in the excerpt. The film contains many famous moments, but choosing one—whether the water-tank sequence, the train attack, Jai’s death or the climax—would substitute familiarity with the film for evidence about this particular article.
That distinction matters because the question is not simply which scenes are memorable in Sholay. It is which three moments the article selected to show Sippy’s interpretation of Salim-Javed’s screenplay. Only two can be established from the accessible account.

The ending depends on which version you watch
Sholay has materially different theatrical and restored endings. In the theatrical release, police arrive as Thakur seeks revenge and stop him. The restored version includes the original ending, in which Thakur kills Gabbar with his spiked shoes. At IFFI in 2025, Sippy said the censor board objected to showing a police officer taking revenge, so the ending was reshot. The Press Information Bureau reported his account in its report on his IFFI remarks.
The Film Heritage Foundation’s 4K restoration includes the original ending and two deleted scenes. It premiered at Il Cinema Ritrovato in Bologna on June 27, 2025. The foundation lists a restored runtime of 204 minutes and an aspect ratio of 2.2:1; those are specifications for the restoration, not a guarantee that every release or stream has the same cut or presentation. The foundation also says the original camera negative had severely deteriorated, so the restoration used surviving interpositives and color reversal intermediates; a surviving color reversal intermediate contained the original ending and deleted scenes. Current retail availability and the contents of any particular consumer edition are not established.

A hybrid film, not simply a Western imitation
Sholay is often described as a “curry western,” but that label is most useful as a description of a blend, not a claim that the film merely copies a Western. The Film Heritage Foundation cites influences including Once Upon a Time in the West, Seven Samurai and The Magnificent Seven. Film Comment says the basic structure draws on Seven Samurai and its American Western remake, while emphasizing that the film takes little else from them. Its Indian characters, humor, music and emotional pattern are central to its identity.
Bhatia also points to the opening shot, a montage of village sounds, the slow-motion ambush, Radha extinguishing lamps at dusk, and silhouetted riders against a sunrise as examples of the film’s command of image, sound and pace. These are a critic’s observations, but they help explain why the film’s visual storytelling matters as much as its genre ingredients.

What the restoration changes—and what it does not
The restored version offers a way to see the original ending and two deleted scenes, while preserving a presentation rebuilt from surviving film elements. The Film Heritage Foundation says the film was shot on 35 mm and blown up to 70 mm for release, but no 70 mm print survives. Its account of the restoration is therefore useful context for the version’s image and history—not a promise about the format or contents of every copy now available.
The film’s broader cultural reputation is also often summarized through retrospective rankings. The Film Heritage Foundation reports that a British Film Institute poll in 2002 voted Sholay the greatest Indian film, and that BBC India called it “Film of the Millenium” in 1999. Those descriptions are the foundation’s reported claims; they are not substitutes for the film’s scene-level craft or proof of any particular scene’s place in the unavailable third part of Scroll’s list.
