Spoilers for Dark Winds Season 2, Episode 6, “Hózhó náhásdlįį.” Leaphorn discovers that B.J. Vines was involved in the mine explosion that killed his son, but he does not shoot Vines. Instead, after the justice system releases Vines, Leaphorn leaves him alone in the freezing desert. The finale gives Leaphorn, Chee, and Bernadette personal closure while sending them onto separate professional paths.
Why does Leaphorn leave Vines in the desert?
Leaphorn and Chee connect their investigations and establish Vines’ involvement in the old mine explosion that killed Leaphorn and Emma’s son, Joe Jr. Vines has also arranged to blow up the oil well and falsified a land survey. Although he is arrested, his wealth and standing help him get released. Leaphorn then takes him from his home at gunpoint and drives him into the snowy desert.

Leaphorn does not pull the trigger. He leaves Vines there in pajamas and without shoes, effectively forcing him to face a solitary walk through the cold. TVLine’s finale coverage says Vines is presumed to perish; a separate recap reports that he dies from the freezing temperatures. The episode does not show Leaphorn executing him.
The choice draws a line between vengeance and execution. Executive producer and director Chris Eyre said the finale was originally scripted with Leaphorn shooting Vines, but Zahn McClarnon objected: “Leaphorn wouldn’t do that.” Eyre agreed with the change, saying McClarnon understood Leaphorn as the story’s moral compass. The outcome is not straightforward legal justice: the system lets Vines go, and Leaphorn subjects him to a brutal abandonment, but stops short of killing him himself.

Where do Leaphorn, Chee, and Bernadette end up?
Joe Leaphorn
Leaphorn leaves Vines alive when he walks away, then turns toward the possibility of moving forward from his son’s death. He transforms Joe Jr.’s rodeo belt buckle into a metal feather and ends the season beside Emma. The closing image suggests reconnection, not that grief has simply disappeared.
Bernadette Manuelito
Bernadette leaves for a new job with Border Patrol. She and Chee share a goodbye kiss that acknowledges their almost-romance, but they part to pursue different paths. Leaphorn gives her the feather he made from his son’s buckle.

Jim Chee
Chee closes his private-investigator chapter and returns to the police force. His farewell with Bernadette is tender, but it is not a promise that they will reunite.
The team
The cases bring Leaphorn and Chee back together, with Bernadette still closely connected to both. But the finale does not restore the three as a working unit: Bernadette departs and Chee returns to the force. Their personal stories reach a pause, while their future together remains open.

- On a remote outpost of the Navajo Nation near Monument Valley in 1971, Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn of the Tribal Police is besieged by a series of seemingly unrelated crimes. The closer he digs to the truth, the more he exposes the wounds of his past. He is joined on this journey by his new deputy, Jim Chee, who has his own old scores to settle.
How the finale’s music frames its goodbyes
In an official AMC Talk interview, music supervisor Rick Clark identified Neil Young’s “Birds” as the song accompanying Bernadette and Chee’s goodbye. Bob Dylan’s “Tomorrow Is a Long Time” plays through the belt-buckle-to-feather sequence, linking Leaphorn’s gesture to the season’s closing movement toward connection.
