Scroll reported his selection on September 19, 2025. Korea.net reported that the award ceremony took place on October 23, 2025, at Hotel Inter-Burgo in Wonju, Gangwon-do Province.
What the prize is and who sponsors it
Scroll reports that the prize was established in 2011 by the Toji Cultural Foundation in honour of the novelist Pak Kyongni. Scroll describes the award as recognising “the truest writer of our time.” The author’s official biography states that the Toji Foundation awarded Ghosh the prize in 2025.
English-language coverage spells the name in several ways, including “Pak Kyongni,” “Park Kyongni,” and “Park Kyungni.” This article uses “Pak Kyongni Prize,” with variant spellings kept only where they appear inside a source’s own wording.
Prestige claims in context
Headlines describe the prize as Korea’s top literary honour. The more precise claim that can be attributed to a source is Scroll’s description of it as Korea’s largest literary cash award. That is a statement about the cash value, not a ranking of the award against every other measure of literary prestige, and the reporting cited here does not support a broader ranking.

What Ghosh said about the award
In an email interview that Korea.net says was conducted between October 28 and November 13, 2025, after the ceremony, Ghosh said: “To see my work resonate in Korea is a source of immense gratification for me.” He also described the award as meaningful because it recognised his engagement with “history, land, and the epic scale of human and non-human life.”
Scroll reported a separate comment in which Ghosh tied the award’s significance to South Korea’s recent cultural reach, which he described as spanning K-pop, film and literature, and as making it “the first non-western country to have done so in a very long time.” Scroll’s report also covers his reflections on the Hallyu wave reaching India through Manipur and the Northeast, and on his own work’s reception in Korea.

Reading Ghosh’s work after the prize
The jury’s citation names ecological literature, and two of Ghosh’s books are the most direct entry points into that theme. The University of Chicago Press author catalogue lists The Great Derangement: Climate Change and the Unthinkable and The Nutmeg’s Curse: Parables for a Planet in Crisis. The catalogue confirms the titles and authorship only; it does not establish current stock, price, or availability. The sources cited here do not identify either book, or any other single work, as the book the jury recognised.
