His last match took place on December 13, 2025, against Gunther at Saturday Night’s Main Event in Washington, D.C. The announcement concerned in-ring competition—not a complete departure from every WWE-related activity.
When did John Cena announce his WWE retirement?
Cena made the announcement at WWE Money in the Bank in Toronto on July 6, 2024. Addressing the audience, he said, “Tonight, I officially announce my retirement from the WWE.” TIME reported the announcement the following day; WWE’s official announcement specified that he would retire from in-ring competition in 2025.
What did Cena mean by retirement?
The announcement was about Cena ending his WWE in-ring career, not an announced exit from all WWE-related activity. Keeping that distinction matters: the word “retirement” in his statement referred to competing in the ring.
What was planned for Cena’s farewell year?
Cena described 2025 as a year of final appearances, with the Royal Rumble, Elimination Chamber and WrestleMania among the events he expected to take part in. Contemporary coverage described the farewell tour as running from January through December 2025. Those plans are now part of the timeline leading to his final match.
