When one asked her to tell Ariana Grande that they loved her, Erivo replied, “Eu irei!”—“I will.” Grande was not at the event; in a video message, she attributed her absence to flight problems.
What happened at the São Paulo premiere
The event took place at Suhai Music Hall on November 4, 2025, for the film promoted internationally as Wicked: For Good and in Brazil as Wicked: Parte 2. Erivo, who plays Elphaba, attended with co-star Jonathan Bailey and director Jon M. Chu. Ariana Grande, who plays Glinda, was absent. CNN Brasil’s event report covered the attendees.

Fans called out to Erivo, including “Cynthia, eu te amo!” (“Cynthia, I love you!”). POPline reported that she spoke some Portuguese, filmed fans and took a Brazilian flag home. Fans also sang songs from Wicked, and their enthusiastic welcome included cheers for the actor. POPline’s account describes the fan interactions.
Erivo’s promise to pass along the fans’ message
One fan called, “Diz pra Ariana que nós amamos ela!” (“Tell Ariana we love her!”). Erivo answered, “Eu irei!” (“I will!”), agreeing to pass on the message. POPline reported the exchange at the premiere.

Speaking to gshow, Erivo said the experience felt like a dream and that she was trying to be present for each moment. She also described visiting Brazil in this way as unbelievable and said she was grateful to be part of it. gshow reported her comments.
Why Ariana Grande was not there
Grande sent a video message to fans. As quoted by Ingresso.com, she said her original flight had been delayed by 16 hours and that she and her team had to leave the plane. Those details are Grande’s explanation as relayed by the outlet, not an independently verified account of the flight incident. She added, “Estou arrasada, mas vou compensar vocês”—“I’m devastated, but I’ll make it up to you.” Ingresso.com reported her message.

Access also reported that Erivo conveyed Grande’s love and disappointment at missing the event, telling fans, “We both love you, very, very much.” Access’s video report covers that message.
The night included Brazilian performers
The premiere was more than a film screening. The program included a performance involving Mangueira, the Rio samba school, as well as Brazilian performers Gloria Groove, Myra Ruiz and Fabi Bang. TMC reported on the event program, and POPline also described the musical performances.
