The Tomatometer summarizes critic reviews. Its 88% figure is based on 408 reviews, not a score out of 100 assigned by one critic or a direct measure of how intensely reviewers liked the film.
Popcornmeter: audience ratings
The Popcornmeter reflects audience ratings. Rotten Tomatoes identifies the 25,000-plus ratings shown for Wicked as verified, so the 95% result is not simply an unverified pre-release fan poll.

Rotten Tomatoes’ Verified Hot designation has its own eligibility rules: the site’s September 22, 2026 explainer says a theatrical film needs a Verified Audience Score of at least 90%, subject to other requirements. Why you may have seen different Wicked scores
Rotten Tomatoes scores can change as reviews and ratings accumulate. In a January 16, 2025 report, NBCUniversal gave a historical snapshot of 90% critics and 97% audiences, alongside an A CinemaScore. Those are figures from the studio’s report at that time, not the current Rotten Tomatoes listing. The live page observed October 8, 2026 shows 88% and 95%.

The studio’s January 2025 report also said the film had earned $700 million worldwide: $460.6 million domestically and $240.4 million internationally. It reported $70 million in the film’s first week of premium video on demand. These dated milestones help explain the film’s commercial reach, but they do not determine its Rotten Tomatoes ratings.
What critics and audiences say about the film
Rotten Tomatoes’ Critics Consensus describes the film as an “irresistible invitation to Oz,” praising Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande’s pairing, as well as its bravura and charm. The site’s Audience Says summary calls it a “bewitching musical experience” led by a spellbinding cast. These are Rotten Tomatoes editorial summaries, not quotations from individual critics or a representative viewer.

Universal announced digital availability beginning December 31, 2024, followed by 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD editions on February 4, 2025.
