The future The Office star was Melora Hardin, who had filmed Jennifer Parker before Claudia Wells took over the role. Hardin later said she was replaced because two female executives worried that she was taller than Michael J. Fox and that the height difference would undermine the male lead. That is Hardin’s retrospective account; the sources reviewed do not independently confirm what the executives said or document their deliberations.
Who was the future Office star?
Melora Hardin, later known for playing Jan Levinson on The Office, was originally cast as Jennifer Parker, Marty McFly’s girlfriend. She filmed the part for six weeks before Claudia Wells replaced her, according to a 2025 report in The Daily Beast. Hardin was 17 when she learned she had lost the role. She recalled: “I was 17, you know. I burst into tears. It was very sad.”
Why did Hardin say she was replaced?
Hardin said two female executives objected to her being taller than Fox, who had taken over as Marty McFly. In her recollection, they feared that a taller woman would be emasculating for the male lead. This explanation comes from Hardin’s account of a private casting discussion; the reporting does not independently identify the executives or provide a production document corroborating their reasoning.
Fox later expressed regret that height prejudice had inadvertently affected Hardin, as reported in The Daily Beast’s account of his memoir. That regret is not independent confirmation of what the executives said.

Why was Eric Stoltz replaced by Fox?
Stoltz’s departure was a separate decision from Hardin’s recasting. The filmmakers first wanted Fox for Marty, but he was committed to the television series Family Ties. After Stoltz was cast and filming began, the filmmakers returned to Family Ties producer Gary David Goldberg in January 1985; Goldberg agreed to adjust the show’s schedule so Fox could join the film, according to the official Back to the Future website.
The filmmakers’ stated reason for replacing Stoltz was creative fit, particularly the comedy. Co-writer and producer Bob Gale told The Guardian that “The humour just hadn’t been coming through with Eric.” The AFI Catalog also records director Robert Zemeckis’s explanation that Stoltz’s performance was not in synch with his vision and that the decision was not about Stoltz’s talent. These accounts describe a creative mismatch, not misconduct.

How the two casting changes unfolded
The production chronology connects the changes, but does not make them one decision. The sources give slightly different durations for Stoltz’s time in the role, so the figures below remain attributed to their respective accounts.
| Event | What the sources report |
|---|---|
| Fox unavailable at first | The official film website says Fox was initially committed to Family Ties; its producer later agreed to make room for the film. |
| Stoltz leaves the production | AFI says Stoltz was fired after five weeks; Gale told The Guardian the change came six weeks into production. These are source-specific accounts, not a single agreed duration. |
| Fox takes over as Marty | AFI says footage from Stoltz’s first five weeks was scrapped and the release date moved from June 21 to July 3, 1985. Fox filmed Family Ties by day and Back to the Future at night. |
| Hardin is replaced as Jennifer | The Daily Beast reports that Hardin filmed the role for six weeks before Wells replaced her. |
Fox’s work schedule followed from his television commitment; it explains how he joined the film, not why Hardin was recast. Hardin’s reported height concern is a different claim from Gale’s and Zemeckis’s explanations for Stoltz’s departure.
