Eddie thinks Kim looks like Shannon because the same actor plays both roles. Devin Kelley portrays Kim and Eddie’s late wife Shannon, so the resemblance is built into the casting. An exclusive preview for season 7, episode 9, “Ashes, Ashes,” has Kim asking Eddie whether he has worked out why she looks so familiar. The show’s dialogue treats that as a puzzle Eddie is supposed to solve, and the actor who plays Eddie, Ryan Guzman, has offered a character-level explanation for why he would want to.
The literal answer is the casting. The deeper answer, according to Guzman, is grief. The rest of this article separates the two and notes what the reporting from May 2024 does and does not establish.
What the preview shows
The preview was reported by Yahoo Entertainment, in a syndicated article by Patrick Gomez published May 23, 2024, as an Entertainment Weekly exclusive. It covers “Ashes, Ashes,” season 7, episode 9. In the clip as described in that report, Kim catches Eddie staring at her and asks whether he has figured out why she looks familiar. She then points to a former role on a short-lived network show called Failed System, which gives Eddie an easy, non-supernatural explanation to reach for.
The original preview video was not available for direct review when this article was prepared, so the dialogue above is taken from the syndicated report of the clip. Readers who want to see the footage should watch it through Entertainment Weekly or the official 9-1-1 channels, where it will appear in its original context.

The literal explanation: one actor, two characters
Kim is not a separate lookalike. Devin Kelley plays both Kim and Shannon, Eddie’s wife, who died earlier in the series. That is the answer to the question as the show poses it, and it is the reason viewers and the character both notice the similarity. Eddie’s response, as the preview frames it, is to build a story around that resemblance rather than to accept a coincidence.
The character theory: an idealized second chance
Guzman’s interviews, all published in May 2024 ahead of the season 7 finale, supply the emotional reading. He treats Eddie’s attraction to Kim as a symptom of unfinished grief rather than a plot device.

What Guzman told TheWrap
In a TheWrap interview dated May 9, 2024, Guzman said the link between the two women is trauma. “They’re both very beautiful women, they both have their own incredible attributes. But the connective tissue is this trauma [about losing Shannon] that Eddie has never gotten over.” He also described Eddie’s memories of Shannon as idealized, and said Eddie sets aside the conflict in his marriage before she died. In Guzman’s reading, that selective memory helps Eddie justify stepping out on Marisol.
What Guzman told Tell-Tale TV
In a Tell-Tale TV interview dated May 10, 2024, Guzman framed Eddie’s behavior as an attempt to live inside a “dream-like scenario” and to say things he feels he never got to say. He summarized Eddie’s view this way: “She looks and sounds exactly like her. I think that’s all it is for him, and that’s all it needs to be. As far as mannerisms and characteristics, I don’t think he could care less. At the end of the day, it’s just like, ‘I’ll make it out to be what I need it to be.'” Guzman also said, “I don’t think there’s a right way to tell your son that you’re gonna go on a date with a version of his dead mother.”

What Guzman told TVLine
Ahead of the season 7 finale, which TVLine interviewed Guzman about on May 29, 2024, Guzman said Eddie was so absorbed in the dreamlike scenario that he was not thinking about Christopher. He described the moment Christopher saw him with Kim as a wake-up call, which he called an “out-of-body experience” for Eddie.

What the creators said
The syndicated Entertainment Weekly report quotes co-creator and showrunner Tim Minear on the storyline: “I wanted to revisit [a] primal wound for [Eddie,] and we’re going to see more deeply into that wound than we have before.” The quote supports the reading that the Kim storyline is meant to return to Eddie’s loss, though it does not spell out what happens next.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What this means for Eddie, Marisol and Christopher
The storyline is a relationship plot as much as a grief plot. In the May 2024 interviews, Guzman’s point is that Eddie’s fixation with Kim leaves him blind to the effect on the people around him, including Marisol and Christopher. The show’s interest is in how a character handles a loss he has not dealt with, and whether he can recognize that the fantasy is costing him the people still in his life.

What is and is not established

- Established as the actor’s interpretation: Eddie’s attraction is tied to unresolved grief and an idealized memory of Shannon.
- Not established: that Kim is Shannon, that the show uses a supernatural explanation, or that Eddie is hallucinating. None of the reporting cited here supports those claims.
- Time-bound: the interviews and preview are from May 2024. Later episodes and seasons may have changed the storyline, so check the current episode guide before relying on this account of where the story stands.
