The red buttons that appeared on celebrities at early 2024 awards shows were pins for Artists4Ceasefire, an artist and entertainment-industry collective calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. At the 96th Academy Awards on March 10, 2024, the group said its pin stood for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and urgent humanitarian aid for civilians in Gaza. The pin was a fashion accessory only in the sense that it was worn on clothing; its purpose was a public political message.
Later reporting describes a different red pin at the 2026 Oscars, one with a white dove rather than the hand and black heart seen in 2024. Both designs are tied to the same campaign in the coverage available, but they should be described separately, with their source and date attached.
What the pins stand for
Artists4Ceasefire is the campaign behind the pins. In its open letter, reproduced in part by the Los Angeles Times on March 10, 2024, the group opens by saying that it comes together “as artists and advocates, but most importantly as human beings witnessing the devastating loss of lives and unfolding horrors in Israel and Palestine.” The letter was published within weeks of the October 7 attack by Hamas that started the current conflict, and it was addressed to President Joe Biden.
The letter asks the administration, Congress and world leaders to honor lives in Israel and Palestine, to help bring about a ceasefire, to end the bombing of Gaza, to secure the safe release of hostages, and to let humanitarian aid reach civilians. These are the group’s own positions. They are stated by the campaign, not an independent account of the conflict, and readers should weigh them as advocacy.

Where the red pins appeared
The Los Angeles Times described a series of red buttons at several recent awards events in March 2024. Members of the band boygenius wore them while collecting three Grammy Awards, and filmmaker Emma Seligman wore one at the Spirit Awards. Al Jazeera’s coverage of the 96th Academy Awards, published March 11, 2024, reported that Artists4Ceasefire distributed red pins at that ceremony.
The 2026 Oscars brought a second design. A March 16, 2026 report by The Tab, which is secondary reporting, said celebrities wore a red pin with a white dove and linked it to Artists4Ceasefire. The article named Charithra Chandran, Saja Kilani and Amer Hlehel among the wearers. Kilani was quoted saying the pin was a collaboration with the artist Shepard Fairey and that the campaign was demanding a permanent ceasefire.

What the campaign and its supporters said
Al Jazeera quoted the campaign’s press release describing the pin: “The pin symbolises collective support for an immediate and permanent cease-fire, the release of all the hostages and for the urgent delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza.” In the same Oscars coverage, actor and comedian Ramy Youssef said, “We are asking for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza,” and added, “We are asking for justice and peace for the Palestinian people and also you know, a really universal message, which is let’s just stop killing the children.” These remarks are Youssef’s and the campaign’s, as reported by Al Jazeera.

Reading a red pin on a red carpet
A red button is not a universal symbol with one meaning. Red pins can be worn for many causes, and seeing one on a celebrity does not by itself identify the cause. The pins discussed here are identified through the campaign name and the event coverage. To check whether a pin is part of this campaign, look for three things:

- The event coverage names Artists4Ceasefire or quotes the group’s pin statement.
- The design matches a documented version: a hand and black heart for the 2024 pin, or a white dove for the 2026 pin.
- The wearer or the campaign connects the pin to the ceasefire message in their own words.
If none of these is present, the pin should be described as a red pin of unknown purpose rather than as part of this campaign.

No official consumer sales channel for the campaign’s pins was verified in the coverage. A generic red button sold online may look like the same pin, but it would not be official campaign merchandise, and wearing it can suggest an affiliation the campaign has not confirmed. Readers who want to explain the symbol should cite the coverage above rather than an unofficial listing.

What remains unclear
The coverage establishes what the pins meant at the 2024 awards events and what the 2026 pin was reported to be. It does not establish whether the campaign is still distributing pins, how many are being made, or whether the stated positions have changed since the reporting was published. Those points are open, and any update should be checked against the campaign’s own statements and the outlets that have covered it.
