The scene’s reported awkwardness came from an intimate-comedy mishap: a secondary 2011 report says Ryan Reynolds recalled that Olivia Wilde’s pasties came off during a take, leaving him momentarily speechless. That account does not establish how Wilde felt, and the original interview has not been independently verified. The film’s body-switch premise explains why awkward situations fit the comedy; it is not evidence that either actor was personally uncomfortable.
What happened during the scene?
TheFW reported in 2011 that Reynolds described a mishap during a sex-scene take on The Tonight Show: Wilde’s pasties came off, and Reynolds was momentarily speechless. This is a secondary account of what he reportedly said, rather than a verified transcript or recording of the interview. It supports describing the moment as an unexpected on-set wardrobe mishap, but not making claims about Wilde’s reaction, consent, or feelings.
Why did awkwardness suit the film?
The Change-Up is a 2011 comedy starring Reynolds and Jason Bateman as friends who switch bodies, with Wilde among the cast. The premise puts characters into situations where they must navigate other people’s lives and relationships from an unfamiliar position. In a CinemaBlend set-visit interview, Wilde’s character is described as a coworker who becomes a possible love interest when the story places one friend in another man’s body. Reynolds said the comedy’s large set pieces had to be played realistically for their absurdity to work.
At the film’s premiere, Wilde described the premise this way: “The thing about body switching is the stakes are inevitably always really high, because you’re gonna find yourself in awkward situations, and that’s what people like to watch — or what I like to watch, at least.” She was speaking about the appeal of body-switching stories, not giving a first-person account of how she felt while filming this particular scene.

What the film’s classification and other comedy do—and don’t—tell us
The British Board of Film Classification’s 2011 record lists strong language, sex, sex references, and drug use. Its content advice also notes a separate soft-core-porn parody scene and nudity in another scene. These details place the reported mishap within a film that uses adult and crude comedy, but they do not verify the story about the take or prove that either actor felt uncomfortable.
Director David Dobkin separately recalled that an earlier version of the film’s fictional “lorno” sequence went too far: “There’s a cut of the ‘lorno’ [Note: means ‘light porno’] that was about three steps too far.” That comment concerns the broader porn-parody material, not the Wilde-Reynolds scene.

What is not established about the actors’ experience?
The available reporting does not establish Wilde’s personal feelings about filming the scene, what happened immediately afterward, or whether the production used an intimacy coordinator. It also does not independently confirm Reynolds’s reported account. The careful answer is therefore that a secondary outlet reported an awkward wardrobe mishap involving Reynolds and Wilde, while the broader film premise made awkward situations part of the comedy’s appeal.
