What Van Damme said about Kylie Minogue
In an interview with The Guardian published on August 10, 2012, Van Damme initially resisted a question about Minogue and suggested the interviewer ask her. He then confirmed his account: “Yes. OK. Yes, yes, yes. It happened. I was in Thailand, we had an affair.” He described Minogue as beautiful and charming, and added: “Sweet kiss, beautiful lovemaking.”

This is Van Damme’s account of a private relationship, not independent verification or a confirmation from Minogue.
Why did it take so long for him to say so?
The dates explain the “years later” framing: Van Damme placed the affair in the period when they were making Street Fighter, a 1994 film, and spoke publicly about it in August 2012. That is roughly 18 years. The interview and related coverage do not establish a reason for the delay, so claims that he waited for publicity or had a particular motive go beyond what the reporting shows.

How the affair claim connects to Street Fighter
Van Damme played Guile and Minogue played Cammy in the 1994 film. A Guardian retrospective published in 2018 recounts that the affair was during filming and gives further production context, including that Minogue joined the cast after the director saw her on a magazine cover. The film’s production history helps place Van Damme’s claim in time; it does not independently establish the private events he described.
What Van Damme’s then-wife said
Fox News reported on August 15, 2012, that Darcy LaPier, Van Damme’s then-wife, said she had not known about the affair and felt hurt by his public admission. She said she was pregnant with their son at the time. In the interview, she said: “I was shocked he would talk to the press about this all these years later to gain some notoriety. I didn’t know about it, I have had my feelings hurt and I feel betrayed.” Her response is evidence of her reaction to Van Damme’s statement, not separate confirmation of the affair.

Did Kylie Minogue respond?
Us Weekly reported on August 14, 2012, that Minogue had not commented on Van Damme’s claim as of that article’s publication. That dated report does not establish her later position, and the sources cited here do not provide a direct response from her.
