Rawhide did end on CBS, with its eighth and final season concluding in 1966. The best-supported explanation is a steep ratings decline, followed by a final-season reset that included a cast shake-up and a move to Tuesday nights. But the available sources do not establish a single definitive CBS cancellation rationale. Eric Fleming’s departure and Clint Eastwood’s promotion happened before the series ended; they were not the cancellation itself.
When did Rawhide end?
Paramount Global Content’s catalog lists Rawhide as a CBS Western drama released from 1958 to 1966, with eight seasons and 217 episodes. It identifies Clint Eastwood as Rowdy Yates and Eric Fleming as trail boss Gil Favor. The Television Academy’s series page gives the broadcast run as January 9, 1959, to January 4, 1966, and says the final season moved from Friday to Tuesday nights. The Academy page notes that its description is sourced from Wikipedia, so Paramount’s catalog is the stronger source for the series’ basic identification and episode count.
TV Guide’s 2006 retrospective describes the show’s last roundup as taking place in January 1966. Together, these records establish that the series reached a planned final season and then ended; they do not, by themselves, document the internal CBS decision that brought it to a close.
Was Rawhide canceled?
In the ordinary sense, yes: CBS did not continue Rawhide beyond its eighth season. The more precise answer is that the program ended after a prolonged ratings slide, but the sources available here do not include a CBS cancellation memo or a statement from a named network decision-maker specifying the reason. It is therefore safer to describe the ratings decline as the strongest documented explanation, rather than claim that a particular event definitively caused the cancellation.

How much did ratings matter?
TV Guide’s January 3, 2006 retrospective reports that Rawhide ranked sixth in 1960–61, then 13th the following season, 22nd the season after that, and 44th the year after that. Those figures show a marked loss of audience standing across successive seasons. They are rankings reported by TV Guide retrospectively, not figures independently verified here against a contemporaneous Nielsen table.
The decline gives CBS a credible reason to reconsider the show, and TV Guide connects the late-run cast upheaval with ratings and money. Still, a ratings trajectory is evidence of the pressure around the series, not proof of the exact deliberations or of one sole cause for the decision to end it.

Did Eric Fleming’s departure end the show?
No. Fleming, who played Gil Favor, was let go before the eighth and final season. Eastwood’s Rowdy Yates was promoted into the trail-boss role, and other cast changes affected Sheb Wooley, James Murdock, and Robert Cabal. This reset preceded the series’ end; the show continued into its final season rather than stopping immediately when Fleming left.
TV Guide quotes executive producer Ben Brady explaining one separate personnel choice: “They duplicated each other. We dropped Wooley because he was more expensive than Raines.” Brady was referring to Sheb Wooley’s departure and Steve Raines’s continued place in the cast—not giving a reason for CBS to end Rawhide.

Did the final-season schedule move cause the cancellation?
The Television Academy page records that the final season moved from Friday to Tuesday nights. That establishes a schedule change, but the source does not show that the move caused the series to end. The ratings decline, cast reset, and schedule change are all part of the late-run chronology; only the ratings trend is directly reported as a decline, and none of these records supplies a definitive CBS explanation.
