The scene was memorable as drama—and became part of a wider public-health story—though the available figures do not prove that the scene alone caused a rise in registrations.
What happens in Camila’s head-shaving scene?
Camila, played by Carolina Dieckmann, has leukemia and is undergoing chemotherapy. As her hair begins to fall out, her mother, Helena, suggests cutting it short. Camila instead chooses to shave her head. The change is both physical and emotional: a gradual side effect becomes visible in one decisive act, and Camila has a say in how she faces it.
Folha Online reported that the scene was recorded on December 5, 2000, and was scheduled to air on Saturday, December 9. Its contemporaneous account describes Dieckmann’s hair being cut progressively shorter and the actress becoming emotional during filming. Folha Online’s December 6, 2000 report documents the scene’s original production and scheduled broadcast.
Why did the scene feel so powerful?
It gave Camila agency
The scene does not present hair loss only as something happening to Camila. After her hair starts falling out, she makes the decision to shave it. That shift—from illness imposing a change to Camila choosing how to respond—gives the moment its emotional center.

The music made the image memorable
Lara Fabian’s “Love by Grace” is closely associated with Camila and accompanies one of the novela’s best-remembered scenes. The song and the image became linked in viewers’ memories; Dieckmann has said fans still send her videos of people shaving their heads to the track. In a later interview, she recalled that hearing it once brought on intense emotion. Gshow’s interview with Dieckmann covers the song’s association with the scene and its continuing resonance.
How did the scene become part of a donation campaign?
Dieckmann later explained that the head-shaving moment was not originally written as a conventional dramatic scene. Director Ricardo Waddington told her they would film her shaving her head because Globo wanted to use the images in a bone-marrow-donation campaign. She said he did not instruct her to cry or dictate how to act; she thought about patients and people who might donate. Globo’s retrospective says the images were subsequently used in the campaign. Dieckmann’s account on Gshow describes the filming, while Memória Globo’s production retrospective discusses the campaign context.

The scene therefore had two connected functions: within the story, it showed Camila confronting a consequence of treatment on her own terms; outside it, the same image could draw attention to bone-marrow donation. Dieckmann also recalled visiting children at INCA while wearing a shaved head, another way the character’s appearance crossed into public-facing awareness of patients.
What is known about the “efeito Camila” and donor registrations?
Memória Globo describes an “efeito Camila”: an increase in blood, organ, and bone-marrow donors associated with the novela’s leukemia storyline. The retrospective reports that INCA recorded 149 new donor registrations in the weeks after the finale, compared with a prior rate of ten per month. The figures are reported by Globo; the page does not state its publication date. A contemporaneous INCA publication also notes that Redome registrations grew significantly after the December 2000 scene, without giving a numerical estimate in the cited passage.

Those accounts support a temporal association between the storyline and increased registrations, not a controlled estimate of how many registrations the single head-shaving scene caused. The storyline, campaign, and other factors are not separated in the reported comparison, so it would be inaccurate to attribute every registration to that one scene. Memória Globo also reports that Globo received the 2001 BITC Awards for Excellence Global Leadership Award for its social-action programming.

The scene has continued to resurface beyond its original broadcast. During a 2021 rerun, viewers posted emotional reactions on social media, as reported by Gshow.
