The White House posted a roughly one-minute video on March 4, 2026 that opens with an animated sequence from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III and then cuts to footage presented as real strikes in Iran. GameSpot identifies the opening as a killstreak animation for MGB (Mass Guided Bombs). ABC News reported that the video gave no indication of which footage came from the game and which was real, and that gap is the core of the controversy.
What the video contains, in order
Based on contemporaneous reporting and a archived screenshot of the post, the video runs in three broad movements. The sequence below reflects how reporters described it; the original post is no longer viewable at its link.

- An animated opening from the game. GameSpot identifies this as an MGB killstreak from the 2023 game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. A Wikimedia Commons record of a screenshot from the White House’s X post describes the same sequence and names the game as Modern Warfare III.
- A cut to real-looking strike footage. ABC News describes the change as a cut from the animated Call of Duty scene to real strike footage. Reports presented this material as strikes in Iran.
- Game-style overlays and kill scores. GameSpot reports that game-like kill scores accompanied later footage, so the video’s visual language stayed close to the game’s interface even after the switch to live imagery.
The edit is the point of the story. A viewer who does not recognize the game animation would have no on-screen signal that the first section was not combat footage, and the video did not label the transition.
What is established and what is not
Most of the verifiable facts come from two reports and one archival record. The table separates what reporters stated from what remains unresolved.

| Original post | The X link is recorded as dead; the Commons screenshot was uploaded later from a copy found on Imgur | Wikimedia Commons record |
Two limits matter. First, none of the reports establish whether any individual strike clip is authentic, and this article cannot make that determination. Second, the permission questions were open when reported. Treat them as unresolved, not as settled either way.
How the reaction framed the video
The clearest objection came from Sen. Tammy Duckworth, an Iraq War veteran who was wounded in combat. ABC News quotes her post on X:

- ADAPT OR DIE IN A FIGHT AGAINST THE ULTIMATE THREAT
- Combat means making choices — different loadouts, different paths through the mission. Combat missions that provide more player choice. There is no one-size-fits-all solution – it is your choice whether to take the stealthy approach or go loud taking on any and all foes.
- One of the greatest collections of Multiplayer maps ever. Launching with new Ground War maps boasting innovative play spaces and the epic return and evolution of the popular War Mode
“War is not a f—— video game. Six Americans are dead and thousands more are at needless risk because of your illegal, unjustified war. And you’re calling this a flawless victory.”
The Independent quotes Connor Crehan, described as an Iraq War veteran working at Barstool Sports, who said: “War isn’t a video game. The consequences of war are final. I wish we didn’t treat it with such a cavalier approach.”

Both responses focus on the same thing: the video treats combat as entertainment-style spectacle. Neither says the game footage was passed off as a real strike in those words, and the reporting does not establish a particular intent behind the edit.

A reader who meets a mixed video like this has to sort three kinds of imagery: game animation, footage that may be real, and footage whose origin is unclear. Once the video drops the labels, those categories blur. That is why the reporting focused on what the post did not say, rather than on a single claim that a clip was false.

Conflict footage is hard to verify even when it is labeled. A separate Full Fact check dated October 5, 2026, examined a different social-media compilation that purported to show U.S. strikes on Iran. It found clips from Lebanon and Gaza and apparently fake clips in that compilation. That finding does not bear on any specific clip in the White House video, but it shows why dates, locations and original sources need checking independently. The Full Fact check is the place to read the details of that case.
Quick Recap
How to check a video like this yourself
- Find the original post or an archived copy, and note its date. A reupload can differ from the first publication.
- Look for a source for each segment separately. An animated game sequence and live footage need different checks.
- Run reverse image searches on keyframes to find earlier appearances.
- Compare visible landmarks, weather, and timestamps against independent reporting from the location.
- Treat game-style overlays or kill counters as signs that a sequence may be synthetic or edited, not as proof of origin either way.
- Check the wider coverage. The Associated Press report on White House war-promo videos places this clip within a wider pattern of government video campaigns.
Where to read the original reporting
- ABC News, March 6, 2026: the description of the one-minute structure and the lack of labels.
- GameSpot, March 4, 2026: identification of the MGB killstreak and the unanswered Activision request.
- The Independent: the caption, the music, and the reactions.
- Wikimedia Commons screenshot record: the archival copy, which notes the original X link is dead.
