Christie Brinkley said she never wanted to end her marriage to Billy Joel, but she reached a point where she knew she “couldn’t live with him.” In her account, the moment that made the decision final was a band rehearsal at the couple’s home. She said she asked Joel for a divorce the next day. Smooth Radio and AOL/InStyle both reported this recollection on April 28, 2025, tied to her memoir Uptown Girl. It is Brinkley’s own version of events, not an independently verified record.
The rehearsal Brinkley identified as the breaking point
Brinkley’s account locates the turning point in one episode rather than a sudden break. According to the InStyle report carried by AOL, the sequence she described ran as follows:

- A band rehearsal took place at the couple’s home.
- Joel behaved in a way Brinkley called “delusional.” In her words: “He was acting delusional in a way I’d never seen before.”
- He became convinced that his bandmates had eaten pasta he had already eaten.
- The next day, Brinkley asked him for a divorce.
Smooth Radio summarized the moment in her own words: “Things just reached a point where I knew I couldn’t live with him.” Neither report offers independent confirmation of the rehearsal or the pasta detail, so both rest on Brinkley’s recollection. The pasta anecdote is what she said she witnessed; it should not be read as a diagnosis of Joel or as a broader comment on his character.
The longer background: drinking and absences
The rehearsal is the immediate trigger in her account, but she describes a longer pattern behind it. Smooth Radio reported that Joel’s drinking led to disappearances that sometimes lasted days. One reported absence fell around the time of daughter Alexa Ray Joel’s fifth birthday. Brinkley said she feared for his safety during these periods.
#1 Best Overall
Keeping the two layers separate matters. The drinking and the absences are the background she gives for the marriage’s decline. The rehearsal is the specific episode she identified as the point at which she could no longer continue. Brinkley linked the breakdown to his drinking and the behavior she associated with it. Nothing in the coverage presents alcohol as the sole explanation for the marriage, and this article does not either.
Efforts to save the marriage
Brinkley described trying to hold the marriage together before she reached that point. In Smooth Radio’s report she said: “I read every self-help book I could find… we went to see a string of psychiatrists, psychologists and other medical doctors.” She presents these efforts as evidence that she did not want the marriage to end, and she described the relationship as an important, happy period of her life.

How much of this is established
- Both main reports are secondary coverage of Brinkley’s memoir and of her Page Six interview. Neither reproduces a primary transcript or a passage from the book.
- The quotations are as printed by those outlets. They have not been checked against the book or a recording, so exact punctuation and context may differ in the original.
- The rehearsal, the pasta detail, and the drinking and absences are all presented as Brinkley’s recollection.
- This article does not include a response from Joel, because the coverage it draws on does not report one.
Where to read the fuller account
For the complete first-person version, the primary source is Brinkley’s memoir Uptown Girl. The reports appeared around the book’s release, so the passages quoted in them are a partial view. Check the current listing for the edition and format you want. The reporting reviewed here does not identify a documentary treatment of the Brinkley and Joel marriage, so the memoir is the most direct available source for her side of the story.
