House of the Dragon strongly implies that his mother was Saera Targaryen, but Hugh does not say her name: the connection comes from clues in his account of her.
Who is Hugh Hammer in House of the Dragon?
Hugh is a working blacksmith in wartime King’s Landing, played by Kieran Bew. The show introduces him and his family amid the hardships of the war: he protests being made to work without pay for King Aegon II, while Rhaenyra’s blockade makes food scarce. His daughter’s illness and death deepen the family’s losses before he joins the effort to find new dragonriders. In Season 2, Episode 7, Hugh encounters Vermithor. (TIME’s account of the new dragonriders)
HBO describes the series as based on George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood. The show’s family details include Hugh’s wife, Kat, played by Ellora Torchia, and their sick daughter. (HBO series overview and cast; Warner Bros. Discovery’s Season 2 character descriptions)
Who was Hugh Hammer’s mother?
The clues point to Saera Targaryen, a daughter of King Jaehaerys I, but the scene does not explicitly identify Hugh’s mother by name. In Season 2, Episode 7, Hugh tells his wife that his mother worked in a brothel and had silver hair. He says she compared him with “her brother’s boys Viserys and Daemon.” (TIME’s account of the scene)

The comparison is the key: Viserys and Daemon are brothers, and Saera is their aunt. Taken together with the silver hair and brothel detail, Hugh’s story strongly suggests that Saera was his mother. That is an inference from the show’s clues, not a spoken confirmation that names her.

Do not treat the show’s implication as a confirmed book-canon relationship. HBO identifies Fire & Blood as the series’ source, but the community-maintained A Wiki of Ice and Fire biography describes book Hugh as a blacksmith’s bastard without naming his mother. Its entry distinguishes the television version by describing him as Saera’s bastard son. (A Wiki of Ice and Fire’s Hugh Hammer entry)

That distinction matters: the show supplies a suggestive family connection, while the cited book-history summary does not establish the same named parentage. Fire & Blood offers background on the Targaryens and the Dance of the Dragons, but the available book summary is not proof of the series-specific reveal.
