Hermione Granger does not invent a named spell in the official Harry Potter material. The Wizarding World’s official pages credit her with clever applications of existing magic and with the organisation that kept Dumbledore’s Army running. Whether that counts as “creating” spells depends on what the word means: inventing a new incantation, or devising a new use for magic that already exists. The sections below answer both senses.
Two meanings of “create”
If the question means a new incantation that Hermione devised from scratch, the official sources do not name one. If it means a clever way of using known magic to solve a problem, the answer is yes, and her best-documented example is a set of enchanted coins used for secret communication.
Hermione’s documented magical ingenuity
Protean-Charmed Galleons for Dumbledore’s Army
The Wizarding World’s official feature on Dumbledore’s Army says the idea of the group was Hermione’s. It describes her recruiting students at the Hog’s Head and charming Galleons with the Protean Charm so members could communicate discreetly. The coins are her clearest magical innovation in the official material, but the innovation lies in the application. The Protean Charm, which links objects so that one changes when another does, was not her invention.
The jinxed sign-up parchment
The same feature says Hermione hexed the group’s sign-up sheet. When Marietta Edgecombe betrayed the group, the jinx caused pustules to develop on her face, exposing the betrayal. This is a targeted, deliberate use of a jinx against a traitor. The official pages do not say she invented that jinx.

Feats and uses in her first years
The official site describes Hermione producing bluebell flames in her first year. It also describes her using the Impervius Charm and an Undetectable Extension Charm on her beaded bag. Each is described as something she performs or uses, not something she created. Readers who see these listed as “Hermione’s spells” are reading a use as an invention.
Who devised and who taught what
Dumbledore’s Army involved several people, and the official accounts divide the credit differently. The table below separates what each character is documented as contributing from what the sources do not claim.

| Character | Documented contribution | What the official sources do not claim |

| Harry Potter | Taught defensive magic to the group, including the Disarming Charm, the Impediment Jinx, and the Patronus Charm | Not stated as inventing any of these spells |
| Ron Weasley | Named with Harry and Hermione as one of the group’s creators in the official encyclopedia | No individual spell or tool credited to him in the pages reviewed |

Where the claim goes too far
Some readers assume Hermione invented the spells she uses most visibly. The official material supports a narrower reading, and it is worth keeping three distinctions in mind:
- Organiser, not spell-writer. Her documented role in Dumbledore’s Army is initiative and coordination, with the group’s defensive teaching credited to Harry.
- Applied, not invented. The Protean-Charmed Galleons and the hexed parchment are clever uses of existing charms and jinxes.
- Used, not created. Bluebell flames, Impervius, and the extension charm on her bag are shown as things she does, not as spells she devised.
The Wizarding World’s official pages cited here do not contain a quotation from a named source stating that Hermione invented a spell, so no such claim can be attributed to them.
