Spoilers through the Daredevil: Born Again season-one finale. Before Born Again, Wilson Fisk and Vanessa were already married and bound together by Wilson’s criminal life. In Daredevil season 3, Vanessa moved from accepting his violence to ordering a murder; Matt Murdock then used that crime to force Wilson back to prison. During Wilson’s absence, Vanessa took a larger role in the operation. Born Again reveals that she arranged Foggy Nelson’s killing on her own initiative, then chose Wilson again when he disclosed his plan and the violence he had inflicted on her lover, Adam.
How Wilson and Vanessa’s relationship began
Vanessa Marianna first appears as an art-gallery curator. Wilson approaches her through their shared interest in art, and their conversations develop into a relationship. She is not simply unaware of the man behind his public persona: as she learns the extent of his violence, she accepts that truth and remains with him. Their intimacy is presented alongside a mutual attraction to art, control, and an unusually candid understanding of each other. TheWrap’s Daredevil season 1 recap traces that early connection.
What Vanessa did in Daredevil season 3
She became an active accomplice
By season 3, Vanessa is more than Wilson’s partner at the edge of his criminal world. After FBI agent Ray Nadeem turns against Fisk, Vanessa orders his murder. This is a decisive change: she is making a consequential criminal decision herself, not merely accepting Wilson’s choices. TheWrap’s account of Vanessa’s arc identifies the killing as a major step in her active involvement.
Matt’s bargain sends Wilson back to prison
Wilson and Vanessa marry in the season. After Benjamin Poindexter attacks the wedding, Matt confronts Fisk and makes the terms of a bargain clear: Wilson must return to prison and leave Foggy Nelson and Karen Page unharmed. In exchange, Matt will not use Vanessa’s role in Nadeem’s death to expose her to prosecution. Marvel’s character-history summary describes the deal as a way to protect Vanessa. The season ends with Wilson back in custody.

What changed while Wilson was away
The story does not establish a detailed itinerary for the years between Daredevil season 3 and Born Again. What matters for the later plot is that Wilson was imprisoned and Vanessa took on a much larger role in the criminal business. In an interview with TheWrap, actor Ayelet Zurer describes Vanessa as having run the enterprise to new heights while Wilson was absent. Born Again also connects Wilson’s eventual acquittal to the FBI corruption scandal and Nadeem’s legacy.
Vanessa’s position in Born Again season 1
She is an operator, but resents being sidelined
When Wilson returns, Vanessa’s role changes. She has helped keep the organization moving, yet resents his absence and finds herself pushed toward the position of a political wife as he pursues power in New York. Their marriage is strained: they attend counseling, and Vanessa has an affair with artist Adam. Marvel’s official series synopsis frames Wilson as a former mob boss pursuing political ambitions.

She hires Poindexter to kill Foggy and a witness
The season finale reveals that Vanessa arranged Benjamin Poindexter’s release and hired him to kill Foggy and a witness whose testimony could threaten the Fisk family’s business. She invokes the FBI scandal tied to Nadeem, arguing that it helped Wilson win acquittal and that Poindexter should benefit as well. This is Vanessa acting without Wilson’s approval: the murder plot is her decision, rooted in the same criminal partnership that had grown during his imprisonment. The Ringer’s finale recap covers her arrangement with Poindexter and her reasoning.
How the season-one finale leaves them
Wilson knows Vanessa was behind Foggy’s killing, but does not reject her. He tells her about his Red Hook operation and reveals that he has kept Adam captive. The port is part of the Fisks’ plan to use a free port to launder illegal money, according to TVLine’s finale recap. Vanessa shoots Adam and chooses Wilson again. By the end of season 1, the two are aligned in their criminal ambitions, though their bond is inseparable from coercion and violence.

How to understand Vanessa’s change
Vanessa’s arc is not simply a story of a spouse waiting for Wilson to return. In the original Daredevil series, she recognizes his nature and gradually becomes complicit; in Born Again, she operates independently enough to order a killing, then recommits to him after seeing his brutality firsthand. Zurer offered a more sympathetic interpretation in TheWrap’s interview: “She’s not a villain, per se. She’s a woman committed in love, deeply in love.” That is the actor’s framing, not a denial of Vanessa’s responsibility for murder.
