HBO’s one-minute teaser for The Last of Us Season 2 offered brief, unsettling glimpses rather than a full plot reveal. In a report published January 7, 2025, Ars Technica said HBO announced an April 2025 premiere on HBO and Max. The footage points to a story set five years after Season 1, with Joel and Ellie’s shared past threatening their relationship and drawing them into a more dangerous world.
What the teaser shows
The footage moves through several short images, not a sequence that explains the season’s plot. Ars Technica’s January 7, 2025 report highlights three glimpses:

- Abby, played by Kaitlyn Dever, weeping over a grave.
- Ellie and Dina slow-dancing, followed by a shot of them fleeing infected.
- Isaac, played by Jeffrey Wright, sitting by a campfire.
Abby also delivers a line that hints at the season’s moral tension: “It doesn’t matter if you have a code like me. There are just some things everyone agrees are just wrong.” The teaser does not establish the context for her words or identify the person or event behind them.
When the report said Season 2 would premiere
HBO announced an April 2025 premiere on HBO and Max, according to Ars Technica’s report of January 7, 2025. That is a historical announcement, not confirmation of current streaming availability; the report does not establish where the season can be watched now or by territory.

Where the story picks up
The season is set five years after the events of Season 1. The official premise, quoted in Ars Technica’s report, says: “After five years of peace following the events of the first season, Joel and Ellie’s collective past catches up to them, drawing them into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind.”
The series remains a post-apocalyptic drama centered on Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey). The report describes their bond as beginning to fray after those five years, but the teaser offers only glimpses of what challenges it. Although the season draws on The Last of Us Part II, the footage does not show how closely the television story will follow the game. It would be premature to treat any specific game event as confirmed by this teaser.
