The Marvel Cinematic Universe never shows Peter Parker being bitten by a spider. Spider-Man: Homecoming starts after that origin moment, though the film does refer to it: when Ned asks, “You got bit by a spider?”, Peter says the spider is dead. Director Jon Watts said the filmmakers chose to skip familiar origin scenes and focus instead on Peter learning to be a hero.
What the MCU shows—and what it leaves out
Spider-Man: Homecoming does not depict Peter’s bite. Nor does it show Uncle Ben’s death. Instead, the film introduces a Peter who already has powers and has begun operating as Spider-Man. The bite is acknowledged in conversation when Ned discovers Peter’s secret and asks about it; Peter assures him that the spider is dead. That exchange confirms a bite occurred in the story, but it is not a flashback or an on-screen depiction of how it happened. ComicBook.com reported on the exchange.
Why the filmmakers skipped the bite
A familiar origin beat
Director Jon Watts explained that the film avoids the origin moments audiences had already seen in earlier Spider-Man movies. “It’s not the same moments of the origin story that we’ve seen before in other movies: we don’t see Uncle Ben die, we don’t see a spider bite. But I think this is the beginning of Spider-Man, in a way. He’s still learning how to be a superhero. In a way, it is an origin story — just not one we’ve seen before.” Watts made the point in a PlayStation.Blog interview.
Focus on the aftermath
Skipping the familiar scene also let the story approach Peter’s secret from Ned’s perspective. Watts said, “It was just so nice to skip past it and just deal with more with the repercussions… and just explore it from the perspective of someone else finding out about it and having a lot of questions.” In another 2017 interview, he summarized the approach: “We never talked about showing it, because the MO was always to not show anything we’ve seen before.” ComicBook.com reported Watts’s explanation.

Was Peter bitten by a radioactive spider?
The film’s dialogue establishes a spider bite, but the available creator comments do not establish the precise circumstances—such as where Peter was or what kind of spider bit him—in MCU continuity. In 2022, screenwriter Christopher Markus tentatively guessed that Peter might have been bitten by a radioactive spider on a field trip, then acknowledged that the writers had not discussed it. That is speculation, not a confirmed account of the MCU’s version of events. The same ComicBook.com report covers Markus’s guess.
How the comics origin differs
Marvel’s comics character page describes a comics origin in which Peter is bitten by a house spider exposed to a particle beam at a public exhibition. That is information about the comics character, not proof of what happened to the MCU Peter. Marvel’s Spider-Man character page provides the comics account.

An origin story without the origin scene
Watts’s distinction is that Homecoming is an origin story in a different sense: it follows Peter as he learns what being a superhero means, rather than replaying the bite and other familiar beginnings. The omission is therefore a storytelling choice, not evidence that the MCU Peter was never bitten.
