WWF Wrestling Buddies were soft, wrestler-shaped plush toys made for children to grapple with instead of each other. Tonka developed the licensed line around the turn of the 1990s, and its mix of wrestling play and cuddly toy design made it a memorable part of many fans’ childhoods.
What were WWF Wrestling Buddies?
Wrestling Buddies were large, soft toys shaped like professional wrestlers. Their pillow-like bodies invited children to hug, grab and wrestle with a favorite character, offering a way to act out wrestling moves without using another person as the target. WWE’s feature on collector Zack Ryder recalls children grappling with the plush figures, while TIME’s All-TIME 100 Greatest Toys entry describes them as the cuddly side of professional wrestling.
Who made the toys, and when did they arrive?
Designer Stefanie Eskander’s account in MEL Magazine traces the work to Tonka. Eskander says she joined the company in December 1989, when a general soft wrestling-toy concept was already in development. After Tonka acquired the WWF license, the team moved ahead with wrestler characters. Hulk Hogan was her first design, and she says she completed the artwork for the first four characters within a week.
Eskander recalls the toys reaching stores in late summer or early fall after that design work. The sources do not establish one exact launch year: TIME describes the line as released in the 1980s, while WWE remembers it as a staple of childhood in the early 1990s. It is most accurate to place their development and childhood popularity across the late 1980s and early 1990s, rather than assign a precise year.

Which wrestlers appeared as Wrestling Buddies?
Documented early characters include Hulk Hogan, Ultimate Warrior, Macho Man Randy Savage and Million Dollar Man Ted DiBiase. WWE also identifies Big Boss Man, Jake “The Snake” Roberts and Legion of Doom among later characters. These are examples, not a confirmed complete roster.
In WWE’s collector feature, Zack Ryder says he owned a roster of the plush toys and singles out Ultimate Warrior as his favorite. His reaction to the toy captures its simple appeal: “What kid wouldn’t want to play with this?”

Why did the soft design work?
The toy translated wrestling’s physical play into something children could grab and tumble with. In her MEL interview, Eskander recalls that children instinctively knew how to play with an early version of the concept, even without instructions: “They just grabbed it and wrestled around with it.” That observation helps explain why the format was more than a wrestler’s likeness on a plush body: the toy was built around the action children wanted to imitate.
What does the legacy amount to?
TIME included Wrestling Buddies in its 2011 All-TIME 100 Greatest Toys list, a notable piece of cultural recognition. It is not a sales ranking, however, and it does not demonstrate that every child of a generation owned one. The available accounts include Eskander’s recollection that the toys became a hit, but do not establish original sales totals, market share or how many children owned them. The title’s “entire generation” is best understood as a description of shared nostalgia, not a measured ownership claim.

How are Wrestling Buddies different from later WWE toys?
Several later products can be confused with the original line. The clearest distinction is whether the toy is an original soft WWF Wrestling Buddy, a later sound-enabled plush, or a hard action figure.

What to look for when identifying a vintage example
If you are trying to distinguish an original Wrestling Buddy from another WWE collectible, focus on its identity and construction rather than assuming every wrestler plush belongs to the original line.
- Product identity: Check that it is represented as an original WWF Wrestling Buddy, not Mattel’s later Brawlin’ Buddies.
- Character: Compare the character with documented examples such as Hogan, Ultimate Warrior, Savage or DiBiase; the available character lists are not comprehensive.
- Play format: The original line is identified by its soft, wrestler-shaped plush design. Talking or sound-making features point to a different product, while a rubbery hard figure is not a Wrestling Buddy.
- Condition and completeness: Vintage examples may differ in condition and completeness. No current resale listing, price or condition grade is established here.
For a general search, “vintage WWF Wrestling Buddies plush toy” is a useful phrase; “Ultimate Warrior Wrestling Buddy” narrows it to a documented character. Treat listings as individual items to assess, not as evidence of a standard current price or guaranteed authenticity.
