Waack Girls is a nine-episode 2024 Prime Video drama about six young women in Kolkata who build a waacking crew. Its dance premise gives the series energy, but the more revealing test is whether the friendships and personal tensions around the group can carry scenes when the music stops. The available critical response suggests they can: The Indian Express describes the show as good-natured and well-intentioned, and notes that some of its most engaging moments happen away from the dancing.
What is Waack Girls about?
Prime Video’s official synopsis follows six girls in Kolkata forming a waacking group in a setting where the dance style is unfamiliar. Ishani is the crew’s expert dancer and leader; Lopa is its inventive manager. The series blends dance and disco music with comedy and drama, using the crew’s effort to find its footing as a frame for the women’s relationships and individual conflicts.
The official listing names Sooni Taraporevala as director and includes Mekhola Bose, Rytasha Rathore, Anasua Chowdhury, Chrisann Pereira, Priyam Saha, Ruby Sah, Achintya Bose, Barun Chanda and Lillete Dubey in the cast. The premise is therefore not simply a showcase for a lead performer: it sets up an ensemble, with Ishani and Lopa at the center of its creative and organizational push-pull.
Does the story work beyond the dance numbers?
That is the series’ most promising dramatic question. A dance crew story can make rehearsals and performances do double duty: they show skill and style, while also exposing how people coordinate, compete and support one another. The Indian Express review’s observation that some of the strongest material comes when nobody is dancing points to the value of the interpersonal story, rather than treating the choreography as the only attraction.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That warmth is also a useful measure of the show’s ambition. Its conflicts need to feel connected to the women’s lives and the crew’s progress, not like interruptions inserted between routines. The available sources support a good-natured, well-intentioned reading of the series, but do not establish that every personal storyline is equally developed. Viewers looking for a tightly focused dance competition drama may want more sustained attention to the routines; those open to an ensemble comedy-drama may find the offstage relationships just as important.
How does the waacking and music shape the series?
Waacking is central to the show’s identity, and the official pitch places it in a Kolkata setting where the style is unfamiliar. That gives the crew’s performances a cultural and social context: the women are not only learning or dancing together, but trying to make their chosen form visible and understood. Disco music helps define the show’s exuberant register, while comedy and drama keep it from being presented as a sequence of performances alone.

The available evidence does not support a detailed technical verdict on choreography, editing or the staging of individual numbers. A fair expectation is a series that uses dance as both spectacle and storytelling, rather than assuming the routines alone will satisfy viewers seeking a documentary-style account of waacking or a competition built around judging and scores.
Is Waack Girls worth watching?
It is a good fit for viewers who want a warm ensemble drama with dance at its center, especially if they are as interested in the women’s relationships as in the performances. Its strongest case is the combination of a distinctive dance premise and character material that can hold attention outside the numbers. If your main priority is an in-depth technical exploration of waacking or nonstop choreography, the show’s comedy-and-drama framing may be less aligned with what you want.
