Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl is a lively return for the stop-motion duo: its handmade visual comedy and Feathers McGraw’s unnervingly blank stare give the familiar formula plenty of spark. The story’s warning about technology running amok is less novel than its jokes, but it fits neatly into a family adventure that knows where its strengths lie.
Does the story feel fresh?
Wallace’s latest invention, the high-tech garden gnome Norbot, goes rogue, leaving Gromit to protect his friend and clear his name after Wallace is framed for suspicious crimes. Feathers McGraw, the penguin villain from the pair’s earlier adventures, is back in the mix. The setup gives the film a clear comic engine: Wallace trusts his clever gadget, while Gromit must deal with the consequences.

The technology theme works best as a source of escalating mishaps rather than a deep new idea. Norbot’s efficient, obedient design is funny precisely because it stops being useful in the way Wallace intended. The film gets mileage from the contrast between an automated helper and Gromit’s practical, wordless competence, but it does not push that contrast into especially complicated territory.
Feathers remains a strong foil. His quiet, almost expressionless presence contrasts with Wallace’s cheerful bluster, and his return gives the plot a recognisable adversary. In Le Monde, Thomas Sotinel described the revival as rejuvenating, while arguing that Feathers’s return and the familiar village rituals limit how much the film modernizes the series. That is a useful way to frame the trade-off: the film refreshes the comic machinery without trying to reinvent the characters.

What makes the animation worth watching?
The handcrafted look is not just a nostalgic surface. Tiny expressions, physical props and carefully staged movements do much of the storytelling, while the film’s visual gags often land before anyone needs to explain them. The production’s craft also gives its technology premise an appealing counterpoint: Norbot may be a high-tech invention in the story, but the world around it is built through painstaking physical work.
The Associated Press reported in 2024 that the production took five years, involved more than 200 crew members and 32 animators, and produced 127 seconds of animation per week. AP also reported that the team made 10 Norbot puppets with 20 interchangeable heads, 11 Feathers McGraw puppets and 600 eyes for all the characters. Those figures help convey the scale of the work, rather than serving as a score for the finished film.

Director Merlin Crossingham told AP that the team wanted digital techniques to look right for the film rather than feel “bolted on.” He also said audiences can recognise the human touch in stop-motion. That philosophy suits Vengeance Most Fowl: its visual world has room for digital support, but the tactile detail and precise physical comedy remain central to its appeal.
Is it suitable for children?
The film is presented as a family adventure, and its comic peril is generally more mischievous than intense. The UK BBFC classifies the cinema version as very mild, citing threat, scary scenes, violence and rude humour. Its detailed advice mentions comic punches and slaps, peril, innuendo, dangerous behaviour and flashing images. Netflix labels the film PG; ratings vary by territory and platform, so those labels should not be treated as identical. The BBFC’s flashing-image note is worth checking for photosensitive viewers.

For parents, the practical question is less whether the film is strictly gentle than how a child responds to comic danger and a villain who can feel unsettling despite the broad humour. The BBFC lists the UK cinema version at 78 minutes and 51 seconds, a compact runtime for a feature-length family watch.

Aardman currently lists BBC iPlayer in the UK and Netflix globally. Netflix’s feature notes that its availability excludes the UK. The film premiered on BBC in the UK on Christmas Day 2024 and became available globally on Netflix on January 3, 2025. Streaming catalogues can change, so check the service in your territory before settling in.

How has the film been recognized?
Aardman reports that the film won BAFTAs for Animated Film and Children’s & Family. Its awards listing also records a Golden Globe nomination for Best Animated Motion Picture and a Critics Choice nomination for Best Animated Feature, as well as a London Critics’ Circle win for Animated Feature of the Year. These are separate results: the Golden Globe and Critics Choice entries are nominations, while the BAFTAs and London Critics’ Circle entry are wins.

Vengeance Most Fowl is most satisfying when it leans into what Wallace & Gromit do best: expressive stop-motion, clever physical comedy and the contrast between Wallace’s enthusiasm and Gromit’s clear-eyed problem-solving. Norbot gives the plot a timely comic hook, even if its technology theme is more playful than profound. The return of Feathers McGraw reinforces the series’ familiar pleasures rather than overturning them, making this a spirited watch for longtime fans and a readily accessible family adventure for newcomers.
