No. Elon Musk did not name Disney or announce an offer. The “hint” came from a vague red-carpet answer in February 2024, which reporters linked to Disney because of Musk’s public feud with the company and his proximity to activist investor Nelson Peltz. Musk’s only later Disney-related statement, in April 2024, was conditional and concerned buying Disney shares, not the company.
What Musk said at the Lola premiere
At the Los Angeles premiere of Lola, a FabTV reporter asked Musk why he was attending. He answered, “I’m just here with friends… Thinking about what companies to acquire,” then walked away chuckling, according to a Futurism report dated February 7, 2024.
The sentence is open-ended. Musk did not mention Disney, a price, a deal structure or a timeline. Futurism’s report tied the remark to Peltz’s presence at the event and to the public dispute between Musk and Disney’s then-CEO Bob Iger, but it presented that link as interpretation rather than confirmed information about a plan.
Why Disney became the obvious reading
Three contextual details pushed readers toward Disney:

- The feud. Musk and Disney had been trading public jabs for months before the premiere, which made the company a natural subject for any acquisition question.
- Peltz. Nelson Peltz was then campaigning for board seats at Disney, so his appearance next to Musk invited the connection.
- The setting. A red carpet produces short, quotable answers. Reporters tend to fill the gap between a vague remark and a headline, and that is what happened here.
None of these details is a statement by Musk about Disney. Together they explain why a reporter’s question and a joking answer were read as a hint.
The “you should buy Disney” exchange
Earlier in February 2024, Musk posted “Disney sucks” in response to rumors about a possible Pirates of the Caribbean project, according to a Salon report. A user replied, “Elon, you should buy Disney!” That sentence belongs to the user. Musk did not write it, and his own post was a criticism of the rumored project, not an acquisition signal.

A contemporaneous Benzinga report also described Musk responding to a user’s suggestion that he buy Disney with a thinking emoji. The emoji is ambiguous. It can be read as considering an idea, as dismissing it, or as a joke, and no report quoted Musk explaining it. Treat it as an emoji, not an offer.
The April 2024 statement: shares, not the company
The most concrete Musk statement about Disney came during the company’s proxy contest with Peltz. In an April 3, 2024 post on X, quoted by Fortune, Musk wrote: “While I don’t own any Disney shares today, I would definitely buy their shares if Nelson were elected to the board.”

That sentence contains three conditions that matter:
- Musk said he did not own Disney stock at that time.
- The purchase was tied to a specific event, Peltz being elected to the board.
- The subject was buying shares, which is a minority investment and does not amount to an acquisition of the company.
Buying shares and acquiring a company are different actions. A shareholder can buy stock without taking control, and a takeover bid is a separate proposal. Musk’s April comment is the closest he came to a Disney-related financial commitment in the reports reviewed, and it was explicitly conditional.

What the record does and does not establish
The reports behind this article date from 2024. They document what Musk said in those months and nothing more. They do not show whether any later offer, announcement or transaction involving Disney has occurred, and they do not establish how the Peltz board contest ended or what Musk has done with any Disney stock since. Readers should check current financial and business coverage before drawing any conclusion about Disney’s ownership or Musk’s plans.
What can be said with confidence is narrower. Musk made an open-ended acquisition remark in February 2024 that reporters connected to Disney. He never named the company in that remark. In April 2024 he said he would buy Disney shares under a specific condition. Neither statement is an announced bid for Disney.

How to read similar headlines
When a celebrity or executive says something about “companies” in general, check four things before accepting a company-specific reading: whether the company is named in the quote, whether the speaker or a reporter supplied the name, whether the statement is conditional, and whether it refers to buying shares or the whole business. The Musk–Disney case fails the first and fourth tests and passes only through context.
The headline’s word “hint” is the honest part. It describes how the moment was received, not what Musk committed to.
